Frustratingly long secret code enables totally useful landscape email on Pre
It's one thing to bury something like developer mode -- a mode that the average Pre user will never need -- behind a cute-but-exhausting throwback Konami code, but it's quite another to hide useful stuff that way. A PreCentral tipster discovered that entering "RocknRollHax" on the keyboard (and yes, capitalization is important here) while in the email app enables the previously missing capability to use it in landscape mode; presumably Palm hid it from end users because they thought it was too buggy or weird for mainstream use, but it certainly works alright for us. Worst part is that the code needs to be re-entered each and every time the email app starts, so you'd better really want it -- but at least you don't have to root to get it.

I wonder what "JazzHax" would accomplish.
"JazzHax" enables spontaneous herbie hancock music to play...."GeorgeHarrisonHax" however will cause all guitars within a 100ft radius to gently weap, i have no idea how they do it!
In case it comes up on here, cuz it came up over on precentral... When capitalizing the capital letters use the hold 'n type cap method. So, Hold shift + type R, then "ock", etc, etc. Apparently it's an issue. Wouldn't know, don't has a Pre (yet).
What's the point of a landscape mode when the keyboard is oriented in portrait mode?
Can anyone shed some light on this for me?
This is probably why it isn't enabled.
Was curios about this as well..
I think it is just a feature of WebOS that will be implemented in future Palm devices.
Landscape-keyboard Palm phone in the future? Maybe.
How about just reading emails?
@Steve
Like Reactive said, it's for reading email. It's esp handy when you have an html riddled message. I hope Palm unlocks this feature so typing the code will become unnecessary.
I soooo want a full screen treo with a landscape keyboard
This could mean a Pre with a larger (side) keyboard in the future!
this could also mean that pre rushed to release a product that was not ready
security holes hacked super quick !!.. WOW
honestly, i find the landscape annoying on my iphone. i prefer the portrait keyboard to begin with and barely use email (although i could see the advantage for reading some mail), so if i happen to be laying down while reading my texts or even have my phone slightly oriented to the side, everything flips and messes me up. i wish it was an option, and i hope that they make it an option if they enable it in any future pre updates (i'm thinking on buying a pre -- 1st gen iPhone user here).
Well seeing that you can read in landscape, then rotate the device for a reaply....
TOTALLY USEFULL!!!
I kind of want a Pre so i can be reminded of the joys from back when you actually had to enter cheat codes in video games.
Long Emails.
Wide pics in email.
Why not have it?
This is useful if you have an email that you have to keep scrolling right and left to read. It becomes such a pain! When I used my HTC Touch Pro it would put the text in a single column but with the Pre it requires scrolling so thank God 4 landscape e-mail mode :-)

Seriously, how do people discover stuff like this? Do they just type random stuff like monkeys at typewriters until they get something?
It's in the code.
Normally this is a thing that gets whispered from friend to friend beginning at the developer that added it in the first place.
Eventually it makes it to someone that puts it on the wider internet
Or people get hold of the binary and run a program called "strings" over it, any interesting string constants will show up.
Unless the developer decides to encrypt those strings or something.....
i just typed "UPGRADETOABETTERVERSIONOFTHISPHONE" into my PRE and it responded with a new app and the message "click here to purchase the Apple iPhone 3GS"... freaky.
Hah, clever, because you are saying it is an iPhone copy, only the iPhone is better...
I get it, nice.
i couldn't stop laughing
Then it said "Download complete. Press any key to continue"
Alas, the poor iPhone had forgotten it had no keys at all.
You guys know that if you continue to feed the trolls, they'll just keep coming back, and, also like feral cats, they'll piss all over everything you leave out in the open.
@Mitchell
Actually I think he's saying the 3GS is a copy of the Pre...
so how do you do this exactly? do you need a rooted Pre?
No, you just type it on the main screen of the email app
Type RocknRollHax
So
(Shift+R)
ockn
(Shift+ R)
oll
(Shift+H)
ax
Did you read to the end of the post? "At least you don't have to root..."
I cant get it to work. Tried exactly as is shown, and when that didn't work, thought maybe first letter is already Cap'd but still didnt work. I have WebOS 1.0.4 did they fix it with this update? Do you have to hit enter or anything after you type? I would really like to be able to do this.
I'm sure hoping that Palm enables this natively. I have rotated my phone for emails multiple times (instinctively) that had photos or were requiring side to side scrolling..
Aaron
All the aussies will find the "root"bit funny. Sounds like a fair trade, a quirky little feature for a root....
Does the iPhone have secret codes? I didn't think so.
It's over. This proves the Pre's superiority.
But, but... the iPod had that breakout game built into it with all the developer's names as bricks...
In all seriousness though, most easter eggs are usually removed from products that can be updated once discovered by the manufacturer. (Since they aren't generally documented, easter eggs have the potential to introduce instability into the product, depending on how deeply rooted they are.) I wouldn't count on this being present in future versions of the Pre without it being made into an officially supported feature.
Back in the Apple Computer Inc days, easter eggs were probably just treated as an innocent, but clever, prank. Under the far more visceral Apple Inc though, such an act would probably not let you get by unscathed, if it made it into the final product. This is probably why easter eggs are practically non-existent on the iPhone.
Considering Palm kept their Easter Egg / Taxi easter egg for their entire previous OS (and even updated it with the devices)
where do i type it i cant seem to figure it out some please help
appreciate it
Just tried it and it works great for reviewing. for those trying to make it happen still:
1)Type RocknRollHax on the main email page
2)Turn landscape
I cannot seem to get it to work and would love to have this feature. HELP!!!
Since it has multi-tasking, in reality you don't have to enter it everytime you use the app - just don't close your email app!
That one's for free - the next one may cost you.
Make sure you type it in fast enough also. I actually tried a couple of times just now...before I saw the post above about not closing the email app (thanks)...and I took too long and it didn't work.. but i typed it in pretty fast and it worked like a charm.
I just figured out that I had to close the email app and reopen it to get the code to work! I'm so happy now!
Works great. Don't forget to hold the shift key when you're typing the capital letters. I'm not sure how fast you have to type it, but it worked for me the first time and I wasn't typing very quickly at all.
...how did that guy figure that out? freak...
Sorry, not on my main computer and this keyboard and touchpad messes me up.
Considering Palm kept their Easter Egg / Taxi easter egg for their entire previous OS (and even updated it with the devices), I don't see things like this being removed any time soon. The only real reason they'd have to remove it is when they finish the feature and it becomes incorporated as standard into the Email app.
And then the Engadget comment system doesn't even put my post as a reply to the original comment.... I give up, lol.
