Meta, Peter Rojas and Ryan Block launch gdgt -- the Swiss Army knife of tech sites
When Ryan Block (our former Editor-in-chief) and Peter Rojas (founder of Engadget, Gizmodo, and RCRD LBL) announced last year that they were embarking on a new project together, alarm bells went off across the interblogs. Following nearly 12 months of rampant speculation, the duo's hard work is finally revealed. Combining the best of social networking, forums, news aggregation, and wiki-based sites, gdgt presents a fairly awe-inspiring range of tools for the hardcore gadget lover.
Imagine if Facebook, Wikipedia, your favorite forum, and Google Reader all got mashed into one gigantic, delicious smoothie, and you might begin to get the idea of gdgt. Instead of retreading territory in which they've already blazed a path, Ryan and Peter present a logical step forward for the gadget community -- a place where you can discuss, dissect, and grow your passion with other like minded individuals. It's an ambitious project with lots of really cool stuff to discover, like product comparison tools, the ability to track gadgets you own (or used to own, or want), news from top gadget sites (wink wink), and embeddable widgets.
Look, we've found the best way in life to learn about something is to scuttle the user manual and dive right in -- we highly suggest you do the same and take gdgt out for a spin. We think you'll like what you find.
Congrats Peter and Ryan!

Congrats Peter and Ryan!

VERY classy post, Josh. Engadget just took a giant leap forward in the world of websites that are doing things the right way.
That's funny, their site is down due to "traffic" what a joke...They aren't slashdoted or digged ....
Finally, another gadget site. Just what the internet needed.
this is like when godmode.com launched. total protonic reversal !
perhaps Engadget can loan them a few servers as it appears they NEED them.
Site is down. :(
Confusing to say the least. Got an Email with a 'Hey you pre-registered bla bla bla, your desired user name is up and running'. 15 minutes later I get another Email saying my user name is not available. Managed to get through all this and had to resend the confirmation Email (I never got it) and upon clicking the Email activation link got a message saying the activation code was invalid. Yay! Site is now beyond borked. Not a smooth sail - not at all...
Here's hoping Peter and Ryan can get it back up and running, I want to check it out!
Maybe they should run on SSD's to keep up with the demand. ;)
Looks like the IMDb of gadgets. I love the idea! Now let's get it up and keep it up! :) Perhaps some Viagra?
Womp....why would they be unprepaired for big traffic?
Looks cool...
So, basically another iPhone fan-site? No, thanks...
wow... reminds me of the zune social. Setup is even kinda similar too.
The site is kind of broken right now, but we'll see how she goes. I clicked on the Nokia N97, added it to the list of devices I want, then noticed the "from $77.xx" price and thought, oooh. Well... I clicked through and it ended up being for a Logitech G5 Mouse. It's obvious the phone costs more, but it shows how the site is broken.
Yuck.... site is awful
How long before they create jstq.com?
I have know idea who the founders are so I have no bias to them. I am not a big fan of the site; I do not see myself spending much time on it. Shame on Engadget for the glowing promotion.
made an account to try it out and the site is just so lacking right now I don't think I can be bothered going back. There are just far too many obvious content holes.
They have routers, but don't have receivers? They have headphones, but don't have speakers? They have a DVR category but no remote control?
Far too many basic holes for a launch. You can't even add content outside of the limited categories they already have and since my roster of toys is so big I don't think I'll be waiting around with anticipation until they get around to them. I'm not going to start adding them. I already did two and that was too much effort.
It's supposed to work like a wiki. You type in the product name, add the specs, and post it. And other people can then use the information.
I know how it's supposed to work, but you can't enter products like "remote control" because the category doesn't exist and users don't have the capability to add new categories.
I was going to register on the new site but their privacy policy doesn't seem to include a pledge not to sell your e-mail address or other personal data. Did anyone else find their privacy pledge?
the website looks too USA-centered for me. Its creators could really try thinking globally instead
and the Samsung Omnia HD is nowhere to be found. I submitted it 9 hours ago and it's still not there, they're not getting far with such lazy admins
I checked it out, they really stocked it full of ads, so many that I was annoyed and left the site.
These guys are geniuses. They've responsible for engadget, gizmodo, etc and stole Veronica Belmont. Nice!
hey, it sort of loads for me. no CSS or anything, but it's "up". :)
First of all, my screen name was taken... My screen name has NEVER been taken at a website before. Secondly I will never go to that site ever because i spent 10 minutes trying to figure out the captcha. I for the first time tried an audio captcha, but it was speaking giberish to me in some crazy language. I got two very simple captchas, work California.... Not hard. And it continued to deny me. Fuck gdgt. I sound like a fuck tard just trying to say gdgt.
