Sprint matches Verizon's pace, launching BlackBerry Tour on July 12
So much for exclusivity, eh? Sprint is staying toe-to-toe with Verizon in the race to get the BlackBerry Tour to market, launching the consensus hottest RIM device to date on July 12 for $199.99 on contract after rebates. It's awfully refreshing to see an ominous statement like "later this summer" morph into "early summer" instead of slipping into the "dead of winter" as is all too often the case with hotly-anticipated phones, and we have a sneaking suspicion the Tour's gonna sell like a remastered Bonnie Tyler live album (that's a good thing, by the way). Who's in?

"consensus hottest"
Am I crazy, or can you actually use a noun like that?
You can, I promise!
Well, consensual makes you think of other things.
wheres the consensus hottest HTC touch pro 2?!!
I still say Photoshop fail with that god awful reflection.
Thanks Chris!
Would someone care to explain the rule? For some reason I can't wrap my head around that usage.
"consensus hottest"
It looks like "consensus" is modifying "hottest," which just makes me think "illegal move!" Maybe I'm just getting old -- like when one forgets how to spell what was previously obvious.
I really doubt it. Consensus is a noun. It should be:
"... launching, by consensus, the hottest RIM device to date on July 12..."
I think.
That is what I thought, commenting.
P.S. I'm not part of the "Eng4dgtz gramer sux" brigade, just curious for personal edification.
Well, consensus can certainly be used as an adjective ("consensus estimate" is a common example), so... it's a short stretch to envision it as an adverb!
But then you have:
consensus (noun) > modifying > hottest (adjective) > modifying > RIM device (noun).
Sigh.
But what did I expect from studying philosophy, a degree in English?
I know the twist the article has taken may not be pleasant for some, but I do support and appreciate the common effort to dispel the confusion or doubt around the usage of this word. Who said blogging cannot be actually edifying? I am on a quest to find a reliable source that would indicate that this word can actually be used in such a manner. I want to see a linguistic consensus around the issue. Hehe. Thank you Engadget for this Brain Teaser. So far, all my sources like Merriam Websters, Encarta, Oxford and Cambridge dictionaries, all point out to the sense of it being a noun - nothing else.
In the Mac Dictionary.app, it refers to using it as an adjective:
consensus |kənˈsensəs|
noun [usu. in sing. ]
general agreement : a consensus of opinion among judges | [as adj. ] a consensus view.
ORIGIN mid 17th cent.: from Latin, ‘agreement,’ from consens- ‘agreed,’ from the verb consentire.
chuck
But Chris, it's not an adverb. You're basically using an adjective to modify an adjective. Not allowed.
If I have a Sprint 8830 is it really worth upgrading to the Tour? Yeah it's pretty but I already have 3G, GPS, access to BB App World, etc. What does this phone provide besides being a world phone and being faster?
It sure is pretty, though......
Higher resolution display, newest OS (4.6 upgradeable to 5.0), faster processor, more memory, a hell of a better looking design...and a camera.
Also, if you actually use your's worldwide, 3G support instead of GPRS and the ability to use it in Japan.
I've heard that this phone will accept microSD cards for 16GB and up to 32GB (eventually). Is this true or is 16GB the limit?
8830 = 64MB of onboard memory
Tour - 256MB of onboard memory
That would do it alone for me but add a camera, a gorgeous screen, hot swappable microSD, updated OS (not terribly updated but still updated for RIM) and you've got a winner.
I'm glad that I return my pre. This is what we can call a real phone.
the sprint version looks better to me
You really have that strong a preference for the Sprint logo?
@hey ya:
it's not just about the logo. on the verizon version, the chrome part is dark, a black chrome so to speak which i, personally, like better which is a good thing because i have verizon and planning on getting the tour.
You know, these pictures all have so much glare, I didn't even notice the difference. I see it now though.
I like the, pre-murdered-out, Verizon one better. Now people don't have to go to the trouble of post-murdering out their Blackberry. Slick.
get some hands on then ill decide if ill get this or the pre
That is the exact same thing i was thinking after reading the release date in this article.
Help me. My Verzion 2 year agreement is up. I'm torn on what to get. Is the HTC touch pro2 coming soon? or should i get the Tour, or the iphone 3g??? I NEED HELP!
Man, I wish 3G was on Verizon. Maybe later this year.
iphone 3gs all the way.
@Devin What are you talking about? Verizon and Sprint has had 3G (EVDO) before AT&T. Are you part of the ignorant masses that believe that 3G came with the iPhone?
or that the iphone created cut, copy and paste?
I'm due for an upgrade soon ...
That Sprint logo on the bottom is totally off-centered.
I'm thinking that if you have to explain your comparison to a Bonnie Tyler album is a good thing, you may be grasping a bit far for metaphors.
Since everyone is talking about grammar lol. It is actually a simile since it is "like" Bonnie Tyler record.
is the sprint version also a global phone ?
Yes.
Unlike the Verizon version.
You can use any SIM card you want.
=]
@Kamaraderie
False, you can use any SIM card on Verizon global phones as well. I do it all the time. You just need to call VZW and get the unlock code. Easy Peasy.
I don't care about the phone... just get us BB Device OS v5
"The blacker the berry..."
Obama! =D
Woo Hoo, go Sprint! I love the new found handset aggressiveness and killer plans!
Same here.
Sprint is making a comeback.
The marketing has never been better.
Love the LG Lotus cameo in Transformers.
=]
By all means i will be there to grab me one... No doubt... Staying away from Big Red.
pre going back, tour come to papa! at least the tour wont have the oreo cookie effect
There must be something wrong...........
Where are all the IPhone fans? They are usually the first to post with negativity and other emotional comments. Is Starbucks closed today?
It's people like you who are idiots.
Why do you insist on complaining that iFanboys aren't here.
Yet, when they are here, you bitch.
=\
Oh maybe perhaps this phone in no way presents any type of competition to the iPhone. Being the owner of a 3G S myself I don't see how this blackberry at all is better than the iPhone.
The storm is a piece of shit of course which is why storm the 2nd is due out later this year. And the Pre of course failed in terms of sales so that's nothing to write home about.
All in all Apple is on top of it's games and the iPhone fanboys/supporters know this. There's no need to remind you but since you asked I had to oblige.
There we go, now it's a real blackberry thread.
The ONLY reason i'm considering this phone is because I have Verizon... and all their other phones REALLY SUCK... and this one seams to suck the least.
