PSPgo packs a 480MHz processor, probably not crossing 333MHz mark
Officially, Sony's PSPgo is only clocking in at 333MHz like the rest of its brothers and sisters, but as the gang at Sony Insider found out in the FCC filing, the internal processor actually maxes out at 480MHz. What that means for gamers is probably nothing in the near future, since the firmware'll underclock it to standard speeds and we've seen absolutely no sign Sony's interested in releasing software exclusively for the UMD-less iteration at this point. Of course, the opportunity to capitalize on the upped hardware is gonna be there, and we still remember a noticeable difference in the technical quality of games released after Sony bumped its original PSP's clockspeed from 266MHz to its max 333MHz, but for now, it's just something to keep in the back of your mind.

PSP Go is a ripoff.
of what?
Of your wallet.
Consumers.
Next question...
your mom is a ripoff. i mean $5 is far too much.
too slow and too late to compete with the iphone,
why try if your not going to make a real effort to compete directly with the iphone/ipodtouch?!
no wonder apple is slow to upgrade their handsets, the competition is miles behind
Well....
This is a portable gaming device. Not a damn phone!!
Christ I'm an iPhone user and even I get annoyed with all the "iPhone this" & "iPhone that" comments. Give it a rest.
If they were competing with the iPhone, they'd release a damn phone. Not a slim version of something that came out a long time before the damn iPhone.
This is awesome except for the fact that we'll never be able to use it :(. Now it just makes no sense
We'll be able to use it when Sony unlocks it in a firmware update.
Or when someone inevitably releases custom firmware.
yeah if DA hacks this the psp will be commercially dead.
Chances are it would just cost more money to produce a crappier CPU. CPU Maximum clock speeds tend to be more a side effect of design rather than an element or goal of it anyway. Perhaps the process they are using for this new batch of PSP's is just smaller.
@leapingmadly
The only people who receive a benefit of the faster processor is the homebrew community. Cause developers (who are already on edge with the PSP as it is) are not gonna alienate millions of PSP 1000/2000/3000 owners, just to take advantage of hardware that would make their game elusive to the PSPGo. This especially true if the PSPGo doesn't sell well, which could very well be the case considering the circumstances.
So, the new processor is useless, unless, Sony opens an app store for the PSP
@ Peter R
That's not true, 333MHz was unlocked via custom firmware long before Sony made it offcial and games designed for 266MHz ran better and loaded faster. It was at the expense of battery life but if you ran games off the Memory Stick then you more than made it back because the UMD drive wasn't being constantly spun
It is true....
The old PSP cpus simply can't be overclocked to 480 MHz. It'll drain too much battery and the risk of frying it are too great for the first generation.
Probably to keep homebrew on lockdown somewhat.
Would be quite cool for homebrew to be able to use that 480mhz.
Not a problem, guys. Custom firmware is the answer. It'll be unlocked to full speed right when the PSP Go is hacked. No worries.
Does this mean that the iphone 3gs as well as the pre have faster processors?
So much for pspgo being a dedicated gaming device....
Chances are the iphone or pre don't have faster process, as i can remember sony is the only company that limits its own hardware for some reason. If Apple was limiting the power of the iphone they would have bumped the clock speed of the 3G instead of building a new 3GS model with a new processor.
"So much for pspgo being a dedicated gaming device"
What are you talking about??
the PSPgo has never been designed as a phone... it has no number keys, no touch screen for virtual number keys.
It doesn't even have a cell phone antenna.
If you are saying that the GO will have skype for making calls your right. Its a feature that has been out since the 2000.
Faster cpu doesnt mean faster graphics. Is your 3ghz P4 faster than a 9800GT for some opengl action? (ok, lame exemple...)
@Boards of Canada
In the case of the PSP fast process does mean better graphics. This has been proven in Chains of olympus.
GOW COO 222mhz vs 333mhz

@ Boards of Canada.
GPU's are faster than CPU's.
Why do you think video cards are now using PhysX, F@h, and even encode movies through the GPU?
@sushi
That is not true at all. Even if Apple clocked the iPhone 3Gs processor at the same speed as the one in the 3G it would still have been faster because the processors architecture is faster by design.
The same things applies to say a Core 2 Duo vs. a Pentium D.
The pentium D might be clocked faster but the core 2 is much faster because of the architecture even tho its operating frequency is slower.
And apple is limiting the power of the iPhone, the 3Gs can go to 800 Mhz but apple has it set at 600 Mhz for battery life.
With the processor, amount of ram, and video card in the PSP, the iPhone 3Gs is definitely faster by quite a large margin.
@Jono
GPUs are not "faster" than CPUs. A CPU is designed for general processing, while a GPU is highly specialized. So yes, for some things a GPU is faster than a CPU. For other things, a CPU is faster than a GPU. You cannot oversimplify this and say that one is simply "faster" than the other.
They're going to unlock it guaranteed.
The PSP 1000-3000 was bumped for GOW chains of olympus (from 264 to 333).
So its just a matter of time. I hope finally this will let players have access to better features like more PSN games on psp or have in game XMB, trophy's, or chat.
I love the playing pixel junk monster on my PSP, i don't know why this hasn't picked up by other devs.
I don't find it that amusing since apple went from 412mhz to 600mhz from the Iphone 3G to 3GS, In about 2 years, It took Sony almost 5 years for a measly 147mhz Bump..... disapointing in my Humble opinion.
You're paying for "potential", remember....
Another goofy design. They should have waited a little longer and revamped the whole thing with Tegra, dual analog, touch screen, flash based storage, etc.. The argument that old games won't be compatible with a dual analog version is bullshit as they simply won't use the other stick. I have a feeling Nintendo is working on a true DS successor with way better graphics and capabilities than the current version. Sony, again will be left in the dust as a jack of all trades and master of none.

its not that old games wont be compatible with with dual anologs , it is that NEW games wont be compatible with old PSPs. sony wants to keep the user base it already has. You dont just abandon 30/40 million royaltiy paying machines and move on to the next one. You wait for the platform to mature , for the hardware to become cheap. sony sold the psp at a loss to begin with and now they sell at a profit ( or premium even) , they would be foolish to make a new system now and abandon the old one.
the reason for the speed bump is obviously for an n64 emulator.. :D
FAIL. My iPod is faster than that.
Have you thought it's maybe because the iPod has to do more things? How about background apps (even if they're only the Apple ones, Music, Safari, and Mail can quickly eat away at power), and having an OS run in the background the whole time?
Let's see your amazing iphone play GoW fullscreen. Fail.
clock speed != processing performance.
It does on the same architecture -_-'
@T D
Is the iPhone/iPod the same architecture as the PSPGo? I was referring to all of the people who wanted to talk about how great the iPhone's processor was.
But yea, if you take a chip and over-clock it, you will get more performance.
Sony us in trouble!!! The had a hard time selling the original Psp until the slim came put. Maybe if the would of added a touch screen then I might have bought.
@Jono

And plays PSP games?
Its like the "PS3 doesn't have PS2 BC so I'm gonna get a 360" arguments. insane some folks.
Avoiding the flame Sony or the iphone black hole themes of this thread, why would Sony put in a speedier processor but not allow users to access the full potential? I don't get the point.
Generally speaking, a 'faster' processor uses less power for a given amount of processing power than a 'slower' processor. By using it at a speed less than it's capable of, and maybe at a voltage less than it's capable of, vendors can use a new cpu to drop energy consumption while retaining computational power.
..I think.
333MHz ought to be enough for anybody :P
It'll be unlocked once a game needs it.
Seriously ikurt7, you and people like you, need to stop with the comparisons between the iPod Touch/iPhone and the PSP/DSi. The ipods/iphones are a completely different device from devices dedicated to gaming such as the PSPGo. Because of the Iphone's design it's not really suited for gaming, and the types of games that can be played on it, is limited. The iPhone/touch is a first and foremost a Phone/PMP, it's not made with gaming in mind.
FINALLY! I've been waiting for Sony to up teh CPU speed for years! This is actually a reason for me to upgrade, since all past PSPs have slower 333mhz CPUs. I can't wait to see what we're going to be able to do with custom firmware on this thing! Maybe Daedalus will finally run at full speed?
The original clock speed was 222MHz not 266. They bumped it up from 222 to 266 then to 333.
i dont care one way or the other... i love the psp and would consider buying one of the pspgo's but the price point sux. i mean in todays economy, there is no way this thing will sell the amount that they would need to compete in the handheld market. Besides, id rather wait untill they revamp. (cause you know they will) eventually there will be a psp go slim phone. you know it. maybe not tomorrow. but there will be one. just wait. and then....DA , you would make everyone one step closer to gaming bliss
Sony loves to point out that it's current range are in for the long haul. All the benefits of this to consumers are lost when that long haul is in brand only.
