Solid Alliance's $10,000 Mnemosyne USB drive is built for style, not convenience
The Greek goddess of memory, Mnemosyne, would surely be proud of this product bearing her name. For starters, it comes at a price few mere mortals can afford and is couched within an extravagant all-aluminum body. The puzzle cube certainly provides a ceremonial feel to accessing the data within, and makers Solid Alliance are pitching it as a luxurious receptacle for your most treasured memories. Yes, under all the sheen, you are still looking at 16GB of standard issue flash memory, but can we really put a price on mythology-infused style?

I want to put it in an epic temple and put under it in ancient writing: "Ye who solves the holy cube will have access to the most glorious of all pr0n..."
CaramelZappa @ Jul 2nd 2009 5:58AM
And then just put this on the drive.

Wow.
And here I was wondering what to do with my ten thousand dollar bill I found in my python skinned wallet.

TrueCrypt works better and is free.
Uncontrol @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:04AM
It's awesome, but even as a luxury good it's overpriced. Maybe for a few hundred, but that price is insane.
Chuckles McGee @ Jul 2nd 2009 1:42PM
"can we really put a price on mythology-infused style?"
Uhm yes...$10,000.
BananaBoat @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:11AM
Every time I hear the word Mnemosyne, I think of BDSM. I don't think that word association is ever going away.
Jason @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:24AM
That would've been a bargain 30 years ago.
someone @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:31AM
i never knew the goddess of memory had to store data on usb
Anonylicious @ Jul 2nd 2009 9:40AM
Yeah, you'd think she would at least use eSATA.
zfurie @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:40AM
And how much is for the Hellraiser Cube version?
I want to cherish all my donkey show files for all eternity... in hell!
Aaron @ Jul 2nd 2009 6:44AM
Kratos would've laughed at the simplicity of this device. Kratos would have then proceeded to give Mnemosyne something to "remember" him by...

Isn't the whole point of aluminum that it's like the cheapest metal available? How come electronics made with aluminum are always absurdly expensive?
kakapo @ Jul 2nd 2009 7:15AM
So you will ask these questions...
No other reason!
David @ Jul 2nd 2009 7:24AM
Aluminum, in good alloys, isn't the cheapest metal available, not even close, and it's extremely difficult to work with.
Most electronics nowadays are made of cheap plastic.
Plastic is definitely a lot cheaper than aluminum.
anantha92 @ Jul 2nd 2009 7:46AM
Aluminium is the most abundant metal on earth, yes. However the extraction process is extremely costly which is why aluminium is expensive.
Carl @ Jul 2nd 2009 8:07AM
Why do you think 99.9% of cars are made of steel as the structural part.
Danneh @ Jul 2nd 2009 12:21PM
Aluminium isn't the cheapest metal available, but a cube that size (72mm^3) would be about 1Kg, which would cost about $2.
Compared to $10,000, I'd be tempted to buy some machinery and make my own.
GT-R* @ Jul 2nd 2009 7:13AM
Wow cool
Mile @ Jul 2nd 2009 7:25AM
Woah. 16GB. I wouldn't know what to do with all that space even if I could afford it - but I'd like to try to fill it up!
Jono @ Jul 2nd 2009 7:54AM
"...can we really put a price on mythology-infused style?"
Yes. Let me put that in perspective for you; The motherfucker costs $10,000.
CharlesProgrammr+engadget @ Jul 2nd 2009 8:09AM
So the question remains to be asked...
"Do these people ever remember having been sane?"
Carl @ Jul 2nd 2009 8:08AM
Why not just throw a jump drive into a bin full of legos? Sorry, Lego.
Sanskrit @ Jul 2nd 2009 10:30AM
I'm sure that's NEXT WEEK's ridiculously priced item.
Chris Thompson @ Jul 2nd 2009 9:30AM
16GB is that a typo? I really hope it is...
Kelvinyam @ Jul 2nd 2009 9:30AM
For $10000, they should have used Titanium and Gold. At least Titanium and Gold = luxury.
Jake @ Jul 2nd 2009 11:43AM
"It is our most modestly priced receptacle."

I totally read that as "Mayonnaise USB drive" on the first pass. Now *that* would have been impressive!
TheOne @ Jul 2nd 2009 10:22AM
On a different website it said it held 32GB but I don't know whats right.
TheOne @ Jul 2nd 2009 10:27AM
Now I can't find the website sorry I was probably just seeing things.
Dan Fruzzetti @ Jul 2nd 2009 11:23AM
Mnemsune (Mnemosyne depending on your Romanization) was *not* the goddess of decadence or waste. She would not be impressed.
cmdr_k33n @ Jul 2nd 2009 11:52AM
Major letdown that it only STORES a USB drive. I thought you had to assemble it correctly to read the data stored on it. That would be way cooler.
Magallanes @ Jul 2nd 2009 11:54AM
wow, a money laundering company.
LandMineHare @ Jul 2nd 2009 11:54AM
And people were complaining about the Apple Tax...
Alan @ Jul 2nd 2009 12:44PM
We should have one of these for the recession antidotes!
Mark @ Jul 2nd 2009 1:10PM
It seems to me these puzzle cubes are usually easier to take apart than put back together. Who wants their flash drive falling apart when one piece is removed?
jhonny5 @ Jul 2nd 2009 1:56PM
Resistance is futile?
alex957798 @ Jul 2nd 2009 2:41PM
HAHAHAHAAAA $10K!! THATS HILARIOUSSS!!!!
I'd rather get a chinese puzzle at the the 99 cent store and an SD card from Radio Shack!
Problem Solved! =D
