Keepin' It Real Fake, part CCXIX: Gemsta's Vaino knock-off

If the Vaino "ultraportable" seemed a little too... well, aspirational, the style mavens at Engadget have dug up a netbook that will certainly correlate with both your awesome sense of style and your self-identification as an OG (that's "original gemsta"). Dug up by some eagle-eyed KIRF-hunters at 2009's Shenzhen International Netbook Industry Fair & Forum, this guy sports an 8.9-inch display, an Intel Atom (Z515 / Z520 / Z530), 1GB RAM, up to 64GB storage, 3G, WiFi, SD card slot and more. We don't have a street date yet for you, but the price should be about 2000 yuan (that's about $294). And the best part? You won't have to worry about these guys stealing your thunder. One more pic after the break.

Looks pretty good, to bad all netbooks are a waste of money
Barney @ Jul 4th 2009 6:39AM
FIRST
Postal Dude @ Jul 4th 2009 6:45AM
The first comments are always so plain and useless. Go to pretty much any article, check out the comments and the first one is either "FIRST" or something like: "Sweet".
SOOPERGOOMAN @ Jul 4th 2009 9:49AM
If you really wanted to be "FIRST!" you would employ a bot of some sort that would troll the net for new postings and then post FIRST for you. Or you could just keep being the Bot. You decide
On topic, at least these guys didn't totally rip off sony with the name. It looks decent. probably highly modable...
murmermer @ Jul 4th 2009 10:38AM
guys you are ignoring the fact he posted "FIRST" as a reply to someone who already posted, I think irony of his situation is pretty funny
NOCknock @ Jul 4th 2009 1:14PM
Gabriel and Barney are both idiots it seems.
Zelka @ Jul 4th 2009 6:49AM
Nice. If there is an Australian release I would consider buying this.
Kip HT @ Jul 4th 2009 7:37AM
Nope, never, nada, zilch, no chance of it ever coming down here.
We don't even have Rock Band 2 here, let alone a KIRF version of an obscure Sony laptop.
dsteve303 @ Jul 4th 2009 8:46AM
oh and also, noone cares about australia since 2000
SOOPERGOOMAN @ Jul 4th 2009 9:52AM
@ Kip HT, No RB2? haven't heard of eBay? Need someone to ship it down? I feel for you man/woman, it is a great game(not trying to rub it in your face). I'd hook ya up. From One Big island(Nfld.) to Another.
10minutehobo @ Jul 4th 2009 7:06AM
Bet it feels good to be a Gemsta
SOOPERGOOMAN @ Jul 4th 2009 9:53AM
Sounds like a fifty cent line...
Commercial Spot!
The Dude @ Jul 4th 2009 11:52AM
Damn it feels good to be a gemsta.
darkstar @ Jul 4th 2009 7:10AM
wow!!!!
this is sooo totally worth it over the sony. have to see how slim it is before buying though.
Luke D @ Jul 4th 2009 7:33AM
I want to buy this so badly.
Ethos @ Jul 4th 2009 7:34AM
$294...Even if it was $499 it would still be better then the Vaio-P which retails for $2000.
Seriously, I mean I can understand paying for quality but 2k is a lot of money for something that is severely underpowered!
NoAndThen @ Jul 4th 2009 8:53AM
+1
I would never even consider buying that Sony POS, I don't care how good the build is, it's not worth the $1,900 premium over the cost of the components. They're idiots.
This little thing is pretty sweet at that price however.
Really though, I'm waiting for ion 2 before the netbook game really is worth dropping a dime on.. and I'm waiting for calpella to get out their, hopefully lowering the prices of all the FSB-laden CPUs.
One can hope.
Pag @ Jul 4th 2009 10:59AM
The Vaio P costs "only" $1000 in its basic configuration. You'll only pay $2000 if you want a large SSD drive and a cover made of crocodile leather.
Al @ Jul 4th 2009 1:50PM
Actually the P starts ad $800, and you can get a $200 rebate if you get 3G service(in America at least) on the device with either Verizon or Sprint.
loopyoyo @ Jul 4th 2009 7:38AM
mmmmmm..i love the taste of good vienna sausage in a can
i_am_rich @ Jul 4th 2009 10:06AM
I feel so KIRFy
apple nerd without a cause @ Jul 4th 2009 10:18AM
LOL they got 3g in there and Apple couldn't on there pro machines.
Brian @ Jul 4th 2009 10:22AM
on the 17" it's not really needed, but i agree they should've put it in the 13".
tehslax @ Jul 4th 2009 10:51AM
You for get that when you buy a Sony product, you pay for the premium. Now what that premium is, has yet to be discovered.
Brian @ Jul 4th 2009 10:53AM
And China has the %^!#*$& gall to call Apple on patent infringement. Mother$%@#&*! sons of bitches!
Dest @ Jul 4th 2009 11:25AM
This is actually not a knock-off/KIRF AT ALL. Besides the general form factor, every other aspect of the design is different. If you're going to call this a KIRF, then nearly every netbook is a KIRF.
On another note, this actually has a touchpad so it's easier to type on it since there's something to rest your wrists on.
Brian @ Jul 4th 2009 10:53AM
..trademark infringement >.>
Agent .25i @ Jul 4th 2009 11:12AM
FIFTH! To reply that is.
His "First" is valid. First to reply. A welcome change IMO. No irony.
@PostalDude. And *your* comment was much more insightful than Barney's ¡
Agent .25i @ Jul 4th 2009 11:14AM
Now that's funny. Pop a refresh and you dont reply. Oh well. LOLZ Happy 4th of JULY guys!!!!
Was supposed to be a reply to Gabriel... :( Agent slowly walks away, head down. /shame
Steve @ Jul 4th 2009 12:46PM
A gemstar is a kind of straight razor. People get killed in prisons with them. Rappers rap about them.
I wonder if that was the inspiration for their lame name.
acniehaus04 @ Jul 4th 2009 12:52PM
pretty sweet actually.. i agree about the vaio P being very overpriced and this thing actually being priced right, but not all vaio's make you pay a premiun, i got my laptop for like $420 bucks and its quite nice, better than any dell or HP i could've gotten for that price...
NOCknock @ Jul 4th 2009 1:19PM
Damn that thing in fugly.
George @ Jul 4th 2009 2:18PM
Until they verify this can be forced into the back pocket of my jeans it isn't on the same level of the sony.
SV @ Jul 4th 2009 5:24PM

Jim Smothers @ Jul 4th 2009 7:43PM
CCXIX... 219....? What's the significance?
Regardless, the only netbooks worth buying are the Nvidia "ion" based systems. Can't stand the Intel integrated graphics crappo!
MZLweasel @ Jul 5th 2009 2:27PM
That netbook may look pretty on the outside, but on the inside it is FUGLY.
Try the Toshiba NB205 (in brown), people.
dupond858 @ Jul 5th 2009 4:34PM
I have to find a link on comparative between gemsta VIVA and SONY VAIO P
