Best Buy set to offer 80GB PS3 bundle with MGS4 and Killzone 2?
Well, it's not a price cut, but it looks like Sony could be about to offer one of its best deals to date to potential PS3 customers, with a little help from Best Buy. Apparently, in an effort to clear out the 80GB PS3s once and for all (to make way for... something), Best Buy will soon selling a bundle that includes said console, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Killzone 2 -- all for the usual price of $399.99. Better still, that bundle is supposedly set to go on sale as soon as next Sunday and, as you can see above, at least some of 'em have apparently already made their way into the stores' back rooms.

@Barney,
Nah, she wants the fatty...
Lundmark @ Jul 6th 2009 3:15PM
What is the point? Everyone already has these games.
Don K @ Jul 6th 2009 3:20PM
yeh, i would expect new games for new bundles...
FNG @ Jul 6th 2009 3:20PM
what about those without a PS3? do they have those games too? Guess what, if you have a PS3 you wouldn't need to look at this bundle...
DudeManDude @ Jul 6th 2009 3:22PM
I'm a bit confused by your logic, why would someone who "already has these games" even be in the market for a ps3? Sure there's a rare person who wants two but what's that maybe 5% of owners? I don't have a ps3 nor do I have these games, why would I if I don't have a ps3..?
y3k.nik @ Jul 6th 2009 3:39PM
I can get a 80gb with LBP and Killzone for 399 cad at my local walmart! That is a better deal than this.
Paul @ Jul 6th 2009 3:55PM
lol you fail man
Nomi @ Jul 6th 2009 4:09PM
HAHAHAHAHAHAH!
Idiot...
pin @ Jul 6th 2009 4:27PM
Actually I have these games but don't have a ps3 so Lundmark does have a point. Ive been borrowing a friends ps3 long term, but I am now looking to pick up a ps3 when he takes it back and this bundle is useless for me.
Quantumphysics @ Jul 6th 2009 6:09PM
Now that PS3's have Dual Shock controllers bundled in, they are worth buying. These two games are also great starter games since Killzone 2 is big and MGS4 is classic.
My problem is the lack of backwards compatibility. I want to be able to put PS2 to rest.
the4thheat @ Jul 6th 2009 9:55PM
For the sake of humanity I hope you were trolling.
MaX PL @ Jul 6th 2009 3:15PM
meh, everyone is gonna wait for the slim. i know i am.
tyler @ Jul 6th 2009 3:30PM
Well Max, nobody replied to your first comment, so I'll help you out here by responding to your second one.
80GB + these 2 games = good deal at $399 if you ask me.
mc-fizzle @ Jul 6th 2009 3:33PM
You have a chance to buy a PS3 and 2 of the systems best selling games but you'd rather wait to pay the same price for a slim PS3 with no game included. Does that make sense?
Its a good bundle for anyone in the market for a PS3.
Monkey with glasses @ Jul 6th 2009 4:31PM
@mc-fizzle
How do you know the slim ps3 (if it comes out) won't be bundle with a game? Or won't come with any game?
Do you know something we don't?
Postal Dude @ Jul 7th 2009 3:18AM
Don't post a fail more than once.
Complex @ Jul 6th 2009 3:16PM
I guess they trying to clean up the stock's for when the ps3 slim finally comes (tgs maybe)
jared @ Jul 6th 2009 3:17PM
Hmm.....you'd think they'd offer more "family" type bundles. This kind of limits the audience right off the bat.
vkannan @ Jul 6th 2009 3:19PM
who needs family when you have killzone 2?
dan2600 @ Jul 6th 2009 3:20PM
MGS isn't even a sony game...its kinda weird to say the least.
I understand the Killzone choice (sony publishing) but now sony loses money on selling the PS3 as well as having to "buy" MGS from konami....
Little Big Planet would have made more sense (except for the fact that the "community" functionality of that game totally flopped, ooo lets make music player and achievement levels 90% of the time, every time)
Andrew @ Jul 6th 2009 3:20PM
The majority of their potential customers aren't looking for "family" games. The PS3 naturally attracts an older age group due to both its price and the nature of its games. Obviously these are both tremendously popular games, so if you're looking to pick up an 80GB anyway you might as well get it with the two games you were probably going to end up buying in the first place.
jared @ Jul 6th 2009 3:22PM
I would think those people are the people who have already purchased, so they need to expand to the family type offering. LBP would be nice, ratchet and clank as well.
Andrew @ Jul 6th 2009 3:46PM
Family gamers are too price sensitive to bite into a $400 console, especially one that caters towards a much older audience. The cheaper, soon to be released slim PS3 will have a better chance with them. For now, gamers who have been waiting to pull the trigger on a PS3 will be lured in by these two blockbuster titles.
Nomi @ Jul 6th 2009 4:10PM
The other bundle had Wall-E and LBP...
slider16988 @ Jul 6th 2009 3:22PM
will buy another one as BD player if Sony lower the price soon.
poke @ Jul 7th 2009 4:25AM
Why do people keep asking for a price drop?? There are cheaper BD players out there now you know.
Sony is a business you know. They are probably still making a loss on the console.
ropeburn @ Jul 6th 2009 3:25PM
this is no surprise, like Andrew said the typical ps3 buyer want's these shooters and maybe some of the killer driving simulators.
I'm now excited to see what the new slim will actually be.
keep the Sony news coming
hexydes @ Jul 6th 2009 3:29PM
The PS3 costs too much. By about $200. No, I don't care how much it costs them to make it.
Aguiluz @ Jul 6th 2009 3:32PM
You get what you pay for.
Eraser @ Jul 6th 2009 3:35PM
haha i wish everything worked that way in the world.
A BMW 7 series costs too much, by about $50,000. No I don't care how much it costs them to make it.
The list could go on...
tyler @ Jul 6th 2009 3:40PM
Wow Sony would be a lot better off if they had you running the show. Let's sell these at $199 and lose even more money!
... Go back to watching your HD-DVD's ...
JayVe @ Jul 6th 2009 3:41PM
Sony's pricing problem is really due to them not paying attention to their own history. When Sony introduced the PS1, the machine was cheaper and easier to produce than the Saturn. This fact allowed them to sell the system at a lower price while Sega introduced Saturn bundles with exclusive (and awesome) software.
Here's a quote from the Sega Saturn Wikipedia page...
"As price drops continued throughout the 32-bit era, the system board design of the Saturn was not as easy to condense in a cost-saving manner and Sega fell behind after price drops offered by Nintendo and Sony. As a marketing strategy, Sega bundled three of its best selling games (Daytona USA, Virtua Cop, Virtua Fighter 2) with the system in order to keep the more expensive Saturn competitive with its rivals. This was not entirely successful as gamers preferred to purchase game titles of their own choice instead, so they turned to cheaper competing systems."
Now, Sony is in the same boat that Sega was in with the Saturn, and Microsoft was with the original Xbox. Their system, the PS3, is too expensive and complicated to produce. Instead, of cutting costs, they bundle the system with exclusive, high-quality software. The problem is, consumers have already shown they prefer to save money AND pick their own software. This is especially true in tougher economic times.
Sony should have paid more attention in history class. Instead, they went ahead and built the Titanic of game consoles... too big and powerful to be economically feasible.
tyler @ Jul 6th 2009 3:51PM
@JayVe
Are you really going to quote Wikipedia? Thank you for that enlightening.. um.. thanks for nothing.
I award you no points, and may god have mercy on your soul.
hexydes @ Jul 6th 2009 4:07PM
@Tyler: If I was running Sony, I never would have produced a video game console that loses money $399.99 a sale. Whoever made that decision should give seppuku an honest consideration.
Templarian @ Jul 6th 2009 4:08PM
@tyler, it is perfectly fine to quite a reference that's what it's used for.
Also he made a very good point, too bad the PS3 is in the position it is. I think many waiting to get a blu-ray player will jump at the PS3 once it's out.
Templarian @ Jul 6th 2009 4:11PM

Nomi @ Jul 6th 2009 4:13PM
Fortunately Sony is running the largest 1st party studio, and as long as theres games...people will buy the system. As far as hardware goes...its priced really well for what it offers.
tyler @ Jul 6th 2009 4:48PM
@ hexydes :: In the past a lot of consoles have been released at a loss with hopes of making some of that up in software and peripheral sales. And don't think you're so damn clever by putting in a word such as seppuku that's not easily recognizable. Anyone can Google a word. Was that on your I Love Japan Word-a-Day calendar? Or something you've been considering as well?
@ templarian :: A lot of people (or so I thought) are aware that Wikipedia is not exactly considered a 'credible' reference.
@ nomi :: Agreed on the hardware. For what you're getting, $399 isn't bad at all.
Monkey with glasses @ Jul 6th 2009 5:05PM
For all you saying the ps3 is too expensive.
Killzone 2 49.99 bf tx
MGS 4 29.99 bf tx
Ps3 399.99 bf tx
Value of console 320.01bf tx
Is it worth it now or still too expensive? And those games can also be sold, so for all broke/cheap/jobless people that can't do a budget buy and x-box 360 and call it a day.
loci @ Jul 6th 2009 6:20PM
"You get what you pay for."
yeah, the new 3DO
John @ Jul 6th 2009 7:23PM
You're missing that you'd be hard pressed to find someone who believes that the 360 isn't nearing the end of its lifecycle, and the Wii is no more cannibalizing PS3 sales than the existence of vegetarians cannibalize meat sales (the analogy is that if you're choosing a Wii, you probably would never have chosen a 360/PS3 anyhow).
Just as a disclaimer, I own a PS3, but I also don't put in enough play time to justify an annual multiplayer fee and don't buy enough games to miss the 360's exclusives.
216 @ Jul 6th 2009 3:34PM
good deal, too bad i've had my ps3 for a year and i own both games
all they're really missing from this pack is inFamous
Fernando @ Jul 6th 2009 3:41PM
Got a PS3 for about 4 months now and ever since I installed linux on it to rip Blu-Ray's I have not booted into the Game OS. Same thing goes for my X360 media center :)
bibbit @ Jul 6th 2009 6:20PM
What version of Linux are you running? What are you using to do the rip?
SOOPERGOOMAN @ Jul 6th 2009 3:47PM
Hey Sony, Forget about adding two games and just DROP THE PRICE $100 so that the rest of the world can Buy it. I have mine but alot do not. SO chop chop get to it.

why is my avatar back to this?
