Best Buy set to offer 80GB PS3 bundle with MGS4 and Killzone 2?
Well, it's not a price cut, but it looks like Sony could be about to offer one of its best deals to date to potential PS3 customers, with a little help from Best Buy. Apparently, in an effort to clear out the 80GB PS3s once and for all (to make way for... something), Best Buy will soon selling a bundle that includes said console, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Killzone 2 -- all for the usual price of $399.99. Better still, that bundle is supposedly set to go on sale as soon as next Sunday and, as you can see above, at least some of 'em have apparently already made their way into the stores' back rooms.

meh, everyones gonna wait for the slim...
that's what she said
@Barney,
Nah, she wants the fatty...
What is the point? Everyone already has these games.
yeh, i would expect new games for new bundles...
what about those without a PS3? do they have those games too? Guess what, if you have a PS3 you wouldn't need to look at this bundle...
I'm a bit confused by your logic, why would someone who "already has these games" even be in the market for a ps3? Sure there's a rare person who wants two but what's that maybe 5% of owners? I don't have a ps3 nor do I have these games, why would I if I don't have a ps3..?
I can get a 80gb with LBP and Killzone for 399 cad at my local walmart! That is a better deal than this.
lol you fail man
HAHAHAHAHAHAH!
Idiot...
Actually I have these games but don't have a ps3 so Lundmark does have a point. Ive been borrowing a friends ps3 long term, but I am now looking to pick up a ps3 when he takes it back and this bundle is useless for me.
Now that PS3's have Dual Shock controllers bundled in, they are worth buying. These two games are also great starter games since Killzone 2 is big and MGS4 is classic.
My problem is the lack of backwards compatibility. I want to be able to put PS2 to rest.
For the sake of humanity I hope you were trolling.
meh, everyone is gonna wait for the slim. i know i am.
Well Max, nobody replied to your first comment, so I'll help you out here by responding to your second one.
80GB + these 2 games = good deal at $399 if you ask me.
You have a chance to buy a PS3 and 2 of the systems best selling games but you'd rather wait to pay the same price for a slim PS3 with no game included. Does that make sense?
Its a good bundle for anyone in the market for a PS3.
@mc-fizzle
How do you know the slim ps3 (if it comes out) won't be bundle with a game? Or won't come with any game?
Do you know something we don't?
Don't post a fail more than once.
I guess they trying to clean up the stock's for when the ps3 slim finally comes (tgs maybe)
Hmm.....you'd think they'd offer more "family" type bundles. This kind of limits the audience right off the bat.
who needs family when you have killzone 2?
MGS isn't even a sony game...its kinda weird to say the least.
I understand the Killzone choice (sony publishing) but now sony loses money on selling the PS3 as well as having to "buy" MGS from konami....
Little Big Planet would have made more sense (except for the fact that the "community" functionality of that game totally flopped, ooo lets make music player and achievement levels 90% of the time, every time)
The majority of their potential customers aren't looking for "family" games. The PS3 naturally attracts an older age group due to both its price and the nature of its games. Obviously these are both tremendously popular games, so if you're looking to pick up an 80GB anyway you might as well get it with the two games you were probably going to end up buying in the first place.
I would think those people are the people who have already purchased, so they need to expand to the family type offering. LBP would be nice, ratchet and clank as well.
Family gamers are too price sensitive to bite into a $400 console, especially one that caters towards a much older audience. The cheaper, soon to be released slim PS3 will have a better chance with them. For now, gamers who have been waiting to pull the trigger on a PS3 will be lured in by these two blockbuster titles.
The other bundle had Wall-E and LBP...
will buy another one as BD player if Sony lower the price soon.
Why do people keep asking for a price drop?? There are cheaper BD players out there now you know.
Sony is a business you know. They are probably still making a loss on the console.
this is no surprise, like Andrew said the typical ps3 buyer want's these shooters and maybe some of the killer driving simulators.
I'm now excited to see what the new slim will actually be.
keep the Sony news coming
The PS3 costs too much. By about $200. No, I don't care how much it costs them to make it.
You get what you pay for.
haha i wish everything worked that way in the world.
A BMW 7 series costs too much, by about $50,000. No I don't care how much it costs them to make it.
The list could go on...
Wow Sony would be a lot better off if they had you running the show. Let's sell these at $199 and lose even more money!
... Go back to watching your HD-DVD's ...
Sony's pricing problem is really due to them not paying attention to their own history. When Sony introduced the PS1, the machine was cheaper and easier to produce than the Saturn. This fact allowed them to sell the system at a lower price while Sega introduced Saturn bundles with exclusive (and awesome) software.
Here's a quote from the Sega Saturn Wikipedia page...
"As price drops continued throughout the 32-bit era, the system board design of the Saturn was not as easy to condense in a cost-saving manner and Sega fell behind after price drops offered by Nintendo and Sony. As a marketing strategy, Sega bundled three of its best selling games (Daytona USA, Virtua Cop, Virtua Fighter 2) with the system in order to keep the more expensive Saturn competitive with its rivals. This was not entirely successful as gamers preferred to purchase game titles of their own choice instead, so they turned to cheaper competing systems."
Now, Sony is in the same boat that Sega was in with the Saturn, and Microsoft was with the original Xbox. Their system, the PS3, is too expensive and complicated to produce. Instead, of cutting costs, they bundle the system with exclusive, high-quality software. The problem is, consumers have already shown they prefer to save money AND pick their own software. This is especially true in tougher economic times.
Sony should have paid more attention in history class. Instead, they went ahead and built the Titanic of game consoles... too big and powerful to be economically feasible.
@JayVe
Are you really going to quote Wikipedia? Thank you for that enlightening.. um.. thanks for nothing.
I award you no points, and may god have mercy on your soul.
@Tyler: If I was running Sony, I never would have produced a video game console that loses money $399.99 a sale. Whoever made that decision should give seppuku an honest consideration.
@tyler, it is perfectly fine to quite a reference that's what it's used for.
Also he made a very good point, too bad the PS3 is in the position it is. I think many waiting to get a blu-ray player will jump at the PS3 once it's out.

Fortunately Sony is running the largest 1st party studio, and as long as theres games...people will buy the system. As far as hardware goes...its priced really well for what it offers.
@ hexydes :: In the past a lot of consoles have been released at a loss with hopes of making some of that up in software and peripheral sales. And don't think you're so damn clever by putting in a word such as seppuku that's not easily recognizable. Anyone can Google a word. Was that on your I Love Japan Word-a-Day calendar? Or something you've been considering as well?
@ templarian :: A lot of people (or so I thought) are aware that Wikipedia is not exactly considered a 'credible' reference.
@ nomi :: Agreed on the hardware. For what you're getting, $399 isn't bad at all.
For all you saying the ps3 is too expensive.
Killzone 2 49.99 bf tx
MGS 4 29.99 bf tx
Ps3 399.99 bf tx
Value of console 320.01bf tx
Is it worth it now or still too expensive? And those games can also be sold, so for all broke/cheap/jobless people that can't do a budget buy and x-box 360 and call it a day.
"You get what you pay for."
yeah, the new 3DO
You're missing that you'd be hard pressed to find someone who believes that the 360 isn't nearing the end of its lifecycle, and the Wii is no more cannibalizing PS3 sales than the existence of vegetarians cannibalize meat sales (the analogy is that if you're choosing a Wii, you probably would never have chosen a 360/PS3 anyhow).
Just as a disclaimer, I own a PS3, but I also don't put in enough play time to justify an annual multiplayer fee and don't buy enough games to miss the 360's exclusives.
good deal, too bad i've had my ps3 for a year and i own both games
all they're really missing from this pack is inFamous
Got a PS3 for about 4 months now and ever since I installed linux on it to rip Blu-Ray's I have not booted into the Game OS. Same thing goes for my X360 media center :)
What version of Linux are you running? What are you using to do the rip?
Hey Sony, Forget about adding two games and just DROP THE PRICE $100 so that the rest of the world can Buy it. I have mine but alot do not. SO chop chop get to it.
why is my avatar back to this?
Not to be an ass, but I don't think you've fully understood the concept of capitalization, for grammatical use nor for emphasis...
@jayve
Very good insight (IMHO).
Yeah, people that are interested in the PS3 would've bought the console and these "old" games already. People that are not would still not buy it since the price has not dropped yet.
how about getting rid of the bullshit bundles and just drop the price allready, two games retail 60 buck a pop or just drop it 100 bucks? better yet drop everything and just give me the console, no cables, controllers, games, manuals or anything, in a plain brown box, and pass the savings on to me, ill buy the controller i want since maybe i dont want a black sixaxis craptroller, and i dont need a av cable. i have tons of computer power cables i can use for power and im going to have to buy a HDMI cable anyways, so drop all the crap, and sell it on the cheap, thats what sells consoles. take lexmark as an example, they were literialy giving away printers, because they got everyone with overpriced ink. well your stupid accessories and games are the most expensive out of the bunch, throw us a bone and drop the price.
JayVe - Well said!
I personally have wanted a PS3 for some time now but have resisted due to the high cost of the system. Despite having the money to purchase the console; I just believe that $400-$600.00 for a console is too much. Though I have to admit, I've been in line with the system in hand, but after much inner debate put it down.
I am particularly shocked that in the current state of the US (and the world for that matter) economy that Sony still has the balls to continue the "high" price tactics with its console(s)(the new PSPgo included). I agree with what some others have said here, you get what you pay for.... However, when the dollar runs short (and with most people these days it does) they are going to spend their money on lower cost systems that provide good solid entertainment - period! As JayVe has pointed out, while the PS3 is by far the most "powerful" system out there, consumer demand is by far the most "powerful" force directing the market and if Sony doesn't start making some serious price concessions it may find its consoles stuck on store shelves rather than in the hands of consumers.
Read my post above and tell that Ps3 is not worth 320.01 of your money? If not than buy a ps2, xbos, xbox 360 or wii because regardless of the price/tech some people won't be happy unless they get it for free.
Yeah this is the real shame about the PS3. Many of us medium to hard core gamers were sold on the PS3 long ago, what with the cell, the blu ray and the new and known franchises. Many of us love the times we've spent with our PS1s' and our PS2s' and many of us are sceptical about all things Microsoft. Yet we're still not buying them. During my wait for a PS3 price drop i've become a Wii owner, a DS owner and owner of not exactly a gaming notebook, but it can still play many of the current big games (albeit on lowest settings). My gaming "needs" are largely catered for and as such it's becoming increasingly harder to justify purchasing such an expensive unit that will inevitably further drain both money and time.
Yes I could go out and buy a 360, I could do that right now without much concern for the cost, but then I'd end up with something that is clearly "second best", and i've already made that mistake with the Wii.
The analogy of the reluctant PS3 purchaser being compared with wanting a $50,000 BMW isn't that accurate. It would be more accurate to say that a previous owner of a BMW Series 1 at a cost of $10,000, and previous owner of a BMW Series 2 at a cost of $10,000 is struggling to justify the purchase of a BMW Series 3 at a cost of $35,000. It is afterall much more expensive than the previous models. And yes I know my "series" aren't correct.
This is true. It should not be questioned.. Best Buy has a little pamphlet in the store showing all the upcoming releases for video games in the month of July. In that pamphlet, on one of the pages, it clearly shows this bundle being released on July 17 i believe. Go into a Best Buy and pick one up.. I work there as well...
Well, im getting buyers remorse now because while i got the same discount off on my ps3 last xmas, it didn't have any games and now BB places 2 of the best games of all time in with the console for practically free...
I was waiting for the PS3 pricedrop, not to get a it bundled with two other games I really don't want for the same price. The PS3 slim better be $300 or I will be very mad at Sony.
Well, chances are, the slim will cost 400 at release but this'll drop the price of the current ps3. ig ot mine for a hundred cheaper at walmart cuz they had this offer w/ a 100 bucks giftcard.
If it was $299 plus these games I would probably bite since summers don't have much releasing. Once the fall kicks into gear I will be all over my xbox and a price cut from Sony during the holidays wouldn't get my attention (but it probably would with the xmas crowd).
$299 plus these games is being a bit of a cheapass.
If you want, head over to Wal*Mart or Gamestop and get yourself a 360 Pro (60gb) w/ no games for $299.
Or $399 gets you the 120gb Elite with Kung Fu Panda and Lego Indiana Jones. Nice.
It's not about being cheap, I just don't need a PS3. I already have a Xbox Pro and recently built a high end computer. If it was less expensive I would blow my money on it. There isn't one game that I am dying to play but I would love to try a couple out like the ones in the bundle. Also U2 looks like it will be good along with fatty princess.
But at $399 I would rather blow my money on something else.
Like a blu ray player but a little less or you got already and don't need?
My local target has this already
I am holding out for a bundle like the Wii that has rubber duckies and water guns.
I wish someone would sell a PS3 bundle with games that don't involve killing.
Is this 80GB backwards compatible or not?
what? ps3 price cut? no beans? then no cheese.
Hey is this true can you do this, ....burn blu-ray threw Linux''
Fernando @ Jul 6th 2009 3:41PM
Got a PS3 for about 4 months now and ever since I installed Linux on it to rip Blu-Ray's I have not booted into the Game OS. Same thing goes for my X360 media center :)
seems like hadios to george forman's grill lol
I still have ZERO interest in a PS3. 2 free games, who cares. Price is not a factor for me. There's still not a big enough reason for ME to buy one yet.
Stop whining about the price for the love of...if they dropped the price to you poor bastards level of $199 everyone would have one and I wouldn't be as cool and it wouldn't be as exclusive as it is. That's why everything Is priced higher. You get what you pay for! That's why I have a high end quad core PC at 4.2 ghz a 30 inch panel at 2560 x 1600 res max settings. I don't want something everyone else has or can afford I like being in the top 10% of coolness factor having things like ps3s 32gb iPhone 3gs and Huge Led hdtvs. I'm the envy of everyone I know. Keep the price where it's at Sony. Those that want one save and get one stop whining about it. For those waiting on the slim version it won't be any different hardware wise dumbasses other than maybe running a little cooler that's it. Suck it up and buy one if not go whine somewhere else !
I really, really hope you're kidding.
hells yeah u preaching to the choir brotha
Ba$tards I bought the Playstation 3 last July for $399.99 Cdn and all it had was a 40GB HDD, no movie, no free game. Too bad though I already own KZ2 and MGS4. Infact MGS4 was the first Playstation anything game I ever purchased. And KZ2 is all I play online now. It's pretty addictive, actually Ratchet and Clank Futures: Tools of Destruction is pretty addictive as well.
Sweet bundle.
i got my ps3 "free" :P all i had to do was buy a 42" xbr tv from sony for over $3000 and $200 for a 1.2m hdmi cable to hook it into the tv with 1.3 hdmi (this was 6 months ago so prices have changed...)
