Synology debuts compact DS409Slim four-bay NAS

Not interested in a do-it-all NAS / router / photo frame like D-Link's DIR-685? Then you may want to consider Synology's just-announced DS409Slim NAS, which keeps things nice and simple and, as you can see above, compact. Despite that size, however, you'll still get four bays for some 2.5-inch drives of your choice (up to 2TB total), along with some standard issue NAS specs like a 1.2GHz Marvell processor, 128MB of RAM, a pair of USB ports, and a single eSATA port -- not to mention the usual DLNA certification and support for UPnP, among other media-friendly features. Look for this one to start shipping this month with a street price of about $400.

Wheres Nas?
Gonna pass on this one. If left upstairs, I'm sure that someone in my family would try to make toast with it.
that's a lot of megabites!
That's one big mug!
i used to have a one bay synology nas. it was a very good unit.
i upgraded to a 4 bay unit from QNAP.
all in all, the feature for them are just about the same, but i think i like synology better. much cleaner web GUI. new firmware updates constantly.
eSata? With some RAID options this could be cheap non-network storage.
that shit ain't cheap ... there are much cheaper non-network solutions, this was born for the network and media streaming
If it wasn't for the four 3.5's I have lying around, I'd consider this.
Yeah, having four 2.5" drives seems stupid to me. Max storage for four 2.5" drives is 2 terabytes, while max storage for ONE 3.5" drive is 2 terabytes. This nas unit seems like it would be too expensive to fill, and even if it used a RAID configuration, it still would not be able to outperform a single 3.5" drive, since its bandwidth is limited by its network connection.
I thought that was a toaster for a minute.
Well it will be after about 10 min of ontime.. are you kidding me? I had a 2 bay NAS that was twice the size with two fans and I could still bake an egg on it.
Does it have Time Machine support?
Yeah, but the damn flux capacitor breaks down all the time.
Yes, the upcoming DSM 2.2 (free upgrade) will support Time Machine.
honestly, i have no idea how big that mug is, nor the toaster nas, since it's relative to it. how about using something a little more standardized for scale?
except an iphone or pre, because it's nice when at least 5% of the comments are reasonable discussions
Does it come with the cool coffee mug too? If it does - I'm in. :-P
2.5" HD's? $400? If you are in the market for such a thing, why not save a few bucks (and more time down the road) new Acer Aspire Home Servers that can be had on Amazon for $50 bucks less and use properly sized hard drives (and still have eSATA & USB for more) and have a real OS (Windows Home Server) to boot?.
The AAHS does look nice; more appealing that what HP has been peddling. But, after trying out FreeNAS, NasLite, OpenFiler, and WHS, I'd rather go w/ an enclosure running w/e OS that company puts on it. I know nothing about FreeBSD or linux and setting up the first three OS's on some old mid-tower I had lying around was a pain. I know they could do what I wanted. Making it happen though was a different story.
...and WHS, no thanks. Lacked the controls (esp. w/ RAID), flexibility, and features I wanted that the others OS were capable of. (Heck it even said I had roughly 80gigs less between 5 drives (four 1TB and one 160GB), because it needed one for the OS, than what FreeNAS said I had between 4 drives and a 32MB, yes MB!, flash drive!) And that is why I started looking at NAS enclousers. Small footprint/power consumption. Most are linux based and are relatively end-user-easy to set up. And they come with all the bells and whistles I'm looking for. Such as directory permissions, custom back ups, UPnP, bittorrent hosting & d/l, and so on.
RAID? And by that I mean *real* RAID, not RAID-1. If I wanted to halve my disk capacity, I'd buy a chainsaw, thanks.
what's with the cup of green slime?
pretty sweet... except for the price.
...there's always a catch.
the cup looks delicious
Where do you get a giant coffee cup the size of a NAS? That's not even practical...
No nas
Synology. Isn't that what Tom Cruse and John Travolta believe in?
Why wouldn't you just build an atom PC from newegg and shove some hard drives in it? Its more versatile.
