Hyundai Provia A7+ GPS unit adds multimedia playback, looks irresistible

It's no secret that some of our US editors have been feeling a bit of tech-envy toward our cousins from the far East, who consider 7-inch PNDs commonplace. Doing nothing to allay those emotions, Hyundai has announced the Provia A7+, which is -- you guessed it -- a 7-inch GPS-slash-PMP soon to be available in South Korea. The device comes with an integrated TV tuner (DMB), 800 x 480 resolution, video and audio playback, Navi-in-Picture functionality, and USB and SD connectivity to expand its abilities to match your imagination. If this thing's routing abilities are even half decent, it should sell like hot cakes in the middle of a particularly cold winter.

I've got the Hyundai F3-EK 7-incher which has English menus and directions, but also has a media player, SD slot, and DMB tuner. Seems to be pretty standard fare here. Wish I could get something like it whenever I get back to the States...

I have the 2.0 Turbo Premium and I can safely say that this is buy far the best car I have ever owned. you cant imagine how many people have stopped me to ask questions about the car. It's insane. I really came close on buying a Nissan 370Z but for the price, the performance of the 370 is barely noticeable. And for all of you that thing that Hyundai is cheap, J.D. Power and Associates ranks Hyundai 4th in its 2009 Initial Quality Study! Right behind the top three automakers: Lexus, Porsche and Cadillac. And I can safely say that they will be in the third rank next year.

So sr check your fact before posting stupid comments like "But it's Hyundai"

I'm gonna go ahead and respectfully play devil's advocate. I don't see in any way that a 2.0T Gen coupe would run toe-to-toe with even a base 370z. While the V6 would be a fairly worthy competitor, the 2.0 I just can't see. We're talking a 130HP difference and the Z having a 6th gear, which is a top-speed gear no less.

It DOES look like a very good car, but sorry man, it's no Z to me.

Indeed the 370 is more powerful but for 25,000$ more than I paid for the same equipment and I test drove both the performance difference is really not earth shattering. that's the same reason I did not buy the Genesis 3.8 coupe, The coupe 3.8 has the same performance as the 370 but again the 125 hp difference did not justify the extra $$$$. Since I have almost the same engine as the Mitsubishi Evo X I can upgrade to 500Hp for about 5K. Aftermarket for the 3.8 is none existent and for the Z it is not that great. so thats why I chose the 2L Turbo.

Sound reasoning. I'm glad I can disagree with someone on Engadget without them going full-douche on me! I think your comparison of it not being earthshattering or worth the money (it's 09, economy needs no words lol), is more accurate.

Aftermarket is a good point, and although yes, you currently CAN make that sort of power at the motor, there's a whole slew of components that don't have upgrades yet that you'd need to drive that much torque without breaking stuff. Aftermarket's cool, just not for me, plus Hyun's warranty is bitchin'! I'd rather had paid $25k for the V6 that I could fix with nothing more than a deductible and been happy with 300 HP.

I have to say they make great cars. I got one the first year they came to USA I paid $5000.00 for a new car and I drove it well over 100000 miles had it for years abused the hell out of it and did not have any problems with it. Replaced the cluth once. I loved that car.

i still don't know what to think about Hyundai. they get excellent ratings and everyone seems to love them except for actual people i know that have them. one of my friends had to replace her transmission at 82k miles on a 2003 Elantra. no can should need a new transmission that soon. my other friend is a auto tech at a local Hyundai dealer and says he would never ever buy one because they are nice looking, well featured cars built on absolutely terribly engineered mechanics.

im sticking to Volkswagen for the time being.

You all realize, most gps units in North America CAN access the built in windows CE, right?
I have been running all sorts of programs on my Mio. Not only that, but you are free to use other GPS manufacture programs, like Garmin's on my Mio. The main program I like to use though is, TCPMP. The Core Pocket Media Player. Plays just about anything, drag and drop.

I got the program for my Mio at, gpsforums.com Downloaded it, put it on my SD card. 90% of them auto execute, so as long as the card is in, Windows will run when you turn on the unit. Note, all the GPS functions still work, it just minimizes to the task bar.
I also have a program that when connected to my PC via usb, it will act as a multitouch pad.

Yeah the use of it while driving will cross the law but the device having that feature and its use while not in motion make for no illegal activities.
