LG teases next-generation Chocolate for August unveiling
To say that the Chocolate was a hit for LG would be similar to saying the PlayStation 2 went over well for Sony. Indeed, the outfit's best selling handset ever (21 million units worldwide) holds a special place in the hearts of suits and shareholders alike, so it's hardly a shock to see the company issuing a next-generation version of the device. Slated to fall into LG's Black Label series, the phone -- which is simply dubbed the 'second generation LG Chocolate' for now -- will be fully unveiled in August, with bits and pieces to be strategically dropped during the run-up. The only real hint at features that we're given is the following: "The new LG Chocolate will be a disruptive force in conventional mobile screens in an effort to maximize usability while inheriting the original minimalist-inspired style and iconic design of its predecessor." Haptics? OLED? A portal into the future? Only time will tell.
Update: The typically reliable Tweakers.net has come through with a few more details, namely that this here phone will become the first of its kind with a 21:9 aspect ratio display (much like Philips' 56-inch Cinema HDTV). We're also told that the model number will be BL-40, the screen resolution will be pegged at 800 x 345, the display itself will be over 3-inches diagonally, the inbuilt camera will be 5 megapixels and HSDPA will be included. Now, if only we knew how the UI would handle...

What is it this time, a Slider, a Flip, or a candy bar?
I think you'll find that it's a combination of all three.
Obviously a candy bar...because it's chocolate amirite
It's actually in the shape of a "Chocolate" Kiss.
I hope it melts.
My LG Vu had many bugs that they never attempted to fix with any sort of update.
My original LG chocolate was seriously the suck. Put up with that piece of crap for two years.
It looks like its going back to its candy bar heritage...nice
Too bad nobody cares about dumbphones anymore
who exactly is nobody? Stop being narrow minded
poke = nobody :)
Technically it never left its slider heritage, since I'm assuming this is the GSM Chocolate which was never updated.
I hope it makes calls!
Teases? Your posts are always intriguing Darren, especially with your awesome witty opinions.
I had the 1st chocolate and it was a piece of junk.
I went to get one of the 1st gen a few months after it came out, but the guy in yhe store told me to not bother. They'd had load of complaints about the touch screan, so needless to say i didn't bother and got a sony erricson W810i instead
I agree... I had the first gen and it was terrible after a while.
The original chocolate had a touch screen?
I loved my tg800, my only 3 complaints were the battery life was horrible, the speaker was WAY too silent on max volume, and no speakerphone.
Android. I called it first.
Oooo, another thin, rectangular-shaped smart phone claiming to revolutionize the industry... such innovation!
The last model Chocolate was a huge bust. I cant believe that it was so popular. I bought one, and was so unimpressed with it, I used it for bowling practice one night after owning it for 2 months. The music player was absolutely atrocious. It took minutes to load up, and heaven forbid you get a call, or even switch out of the player to use another function of the phone; that would mean you had to reload all the music again. The touch sensitive keys on the body, omg. Nothing like holding the phone at a weird angle from your face so as to not touch the the buttons, and hang up in the middle of a call. Everything but the color was wrong about that phone.
That said, whats with the Cylon red stripe down the side? Or, are these just a few pictures of a chocolate covered strawberry, Darren?
The Dutch website Tweakers.net claims this LG Phone will feature a 21:9 aspect ratio screen for movie watching:

Just thought you should know.
Wow... actual tech info on engadget...
Seriously!
LG releases another shit phone with half-baked features and buggy software, claims it to be revolutionary, nobody cares. News at 11.
21:9 800x345 doesn't sound too new and unique. Kind of similar to the 2.42:1 800x352 screen on the Nokia E90 Communicator perhaps?
i think it looks pretty nice from those shots...just put android on it instead of LGs garbage ui
Why cant they make the versizon versions of the chocolate look this good?
Why cant they make the verizon versions look this good
My favourite is white chocolate. Then milk chocolate.
It runs Windows 7
I saw something about LG using winmo in the future...we'll see if it's got at least 6.5 if they do add it to this.
i have a chocolate with verizon right now.. and my contract is up, maybe this will be worth it.. but probably not because the touch buttons on the screen are terrible.. maybe they improved upon it.
I have the Chocolate 2 and I've never hated a phone so much. I keep hoping Verizon might come out with something I actually want one of these days. I've had my 2-year credit since April but I refuse to get suckered into another crap phone.
I had a 1st gen verizon chocolate, and even though towards the end of its life it started to act up I loved (and still love) that thing like a child. It ended up being a critical step in my progression of phones......going from a POS to the chocolate to my current enV2 and soon to be making the jump to a blackberry.
I have never owned a quality LG product.
According to in store reps Verizon is getting the Pre by December. Bewteen that and the LG Dare (which I still love, shitty UI and all), I cant understand why anyone would bother even touching another phone in Verizon's lineup outside of Crackberries.. Even for dumb phones they tend to be horrible.
If your in the US then it doesn't matter, the phone will be on Verizon's crappy obsolete CDMA network anyways, and who wants that? Verizon sucks more than any phone company out there.
+1
What's so obsolete about CDMA?
10:1 it will be a super glossy smudgefest with "buttons" that work only 50% of the time.
If this has Verizons crappy UI - you can bet it'll suck.
Everyone that I know that had or used this phone hated it. Both versions.
widescreen? awesome.
this probably isnt coming to verizon anyways
The whole 21:9 screen thing just doesn't seem to work out in my mind.
I just feel like it's just going to be a really really long phone, or have a huge bezel, or just be big all over (or normal sized with a tiny screen).
I've sen the E90, but I just feel like this is a bit different. How many inches is the E90 screen, by the way?

erm, BL-40 was a model name that showed up in... Bell? Telus? one of the two's inventory a while ago- i know that Boy Genius Report had a dig on it...
This makes me incredibly happy to see they're reviving the series, I really hope they put effort into it. I owned the first and second gen Chocolates, and they were great phones. I was pretty sad to see LG trash it with the flip phone Chocolate.
Very nice, but the center part looks far too flimsy. When I saw the first picture, I thought of a cylon (not the hot cyborg ones either) and that made me sad.
Please, just let it run Android, Flash 10, etc
