OPPO's long-awaited BDP-83 universal Blu-ray player now shipping
It's been a long (long!) time coming, but we're thrilled to finally be able to say that OPPO's multifaceted BDP-83 is shipping en masse to those willing to part with five bills (or $500, for those working without conversion tables). During our time with the player, we were duly impressed with most every aspect, and if you're still on the hunt for a Blu-ray player that can spin DVD-Audio and SACD on the side, you'll be hard pressed to find a better option than this. So, who's taking the plunge?

That does look slick.
Pricing, please? Some of us are too busy (read: "lazy") to look it up for ourselves.
Tuba,
You've got two options.
1. Follow the read link, or, if you prefer, click here: http://www.oppodigital.com/proddetail.asp?prod=BDP83
2. Read the bit that says 'five bills' and guess what he might mean.
Let me know if there's anything else i can help you with. I can iron shirts like a mother, you know.
i guess he doesnt play the tuba
Oh . . . there it is. Sorry.
Tuba: +1 for humility.
There was supposed to be a ***sips coffee*** at the top of that last post, but I put a tag instead of "***" so Engadget took it out.
See, like I hadn't had my coffee yet, that's why I didn't see the "five bills" part . . . ha ha? Anyone?
Never mind. I'm a complete failure. I -1 myself.
Got mine!
I wish I needed a blu-ray player. I suppose my Samsung will do for now.
My last high end DVD player was one of the 39xx series from Denon. I'm currently using a Bluray/HD-DVD player in my HTPC, but I might be willing to switch over to this one. The load times are where it's at for me. They are finally in the realm of "DVD" speeds. A few seconds to load a disc, vs. 1-1.5 minutes? Sign me up.
it does look nice but im keepin my cash for a HERO
Are you holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night?
I've had one for a couple of months now and it's fantastic, easily the best Blu-ray player out of the 4 that I've used so far.
Can you switch it to regionless (or change regions) like the older Oppo DVD players?
@Naman
There are hacked firmwares floating around that enable region free. Oppo has stated they will not make it region free themselves due to the BDA license agreement.
Don't want a PS3? This is the be all end all BluRay/DVD player. One of the only companies who actually seek out customer and pro feedback and make adjustments as needed. What more could you ask for.
You're talking nonce-sense. The PS3 has massive flaws:
You can't stack books or eggs on top of it.
There's no tactile feedback on the 'on' and 'eject' buttons.
At least one person thinks it's ugly.
It doesn't have a display on the unit.
It's prone to fingerprints.
It's not milk-proof.
It's not shark proof.
Children want to play with it when you're watching blurays.
It's got no USB ports, no ethernet ports and no WiFi.
@j_g_puff
No ethernet, usb or wifi on the ps3? What planet are you from? The ps3 can do everything this player can do as well as much much more.
Not 100% sure, but I think he was joking.
Or maybe, I'm just hoping he's joking...
I do wish it was flat though. Dang thing looks like an old fax machine.
Now that you mention it, ana, I realise that you're right. Thanks for educating me.
@anantha92
Except play DVD-A, SACD, upscale regular dvd's really really well, analog outputs.
@Michael
You're interested in a player that plays DVDA? Damn dude, I had no idea you were into that kind of thing.
@anantha92: Irony. You may have heard of it.
If nothing else "Not shark proof" should have given it away.
@comment_system=Fail
Ummm...irony? About as ironic as rain on your wedding day. You might want to go back to English class.
@j_g_puff
Mine PS3 is totally shark-proof, as long as it is dropped on said shark from a great height.
I do agree that its lactose intolerence is a major flaw tho'...
A lot of hate here. Where's the love?
In all seriousness, killing Hulu.com on the PS3 was a really bad move. Add that to your list.
@Michael
I'm sure the ps3 supports DVD-A. I know for sure that the original batch of PS3s did infact support SACD playback, however the functionality was removed in an attempt to save cost.
JG Puff,
My 60GB PS3 has WiFi, All PS3's have USB. 60GB has 4 all others have 2. Appearance is subjective, I like the way the PS3 looks. Sony has also demonstrated a devices that turns your PS3 in to a DVR. The oppo cannot do that YET.... note the SATA port on the BDP-83's motherboard.

Will they ever add Netflix steaming to the device? I guess it's a fair trade-off though being that it does support both SACD and DVD-A. If my Samsung BDP-2550 had that it would be near perfect!
Better off buying a PS3 bundled with some games (for the price) rather than buying this. No matter what, PS3 is still the best blu-ray player on earth.
I do agree that the PS3 is one of the best Blu-ray players on the market. The GUI as compared to my BDP-2550 is extremely slick and responsive. But since I am using an older Denon receiver the only way for me to take full advantage of all the latest codecs is to use 7.1 analog outputs which understandably the PS3 does not have. If it wasn't for that the PS3 would get an extra nod from me.
So for all others trying to achieve the same result the Oppo (or any other player that supports 7.1 analog outputs) seem to be better options in my opinion.
Except for the fact that it doesn't support IR devices.
Oversight?
My Harmony Remote yearns for a relationship with my PS3,
but I'm too cheap to pay 50 bucks for the adapter, considering that's what I paid for the remote.
Ahh yes, How could I forget? That was pretty gimmicky on their part to lock it out of use with IR remotes just for the sake of using Bluetooth. I have two custom remotes (touchscreen/hard key) that would love to work with my PS3 but instead are useless with it. And I don't care for the clunky IR solutions that would be necessary to get them to work either!
Even with the shitty remote situation, the PS3 is still the best bluray player.
Can you browse porntube.com from your oppo? Methinks not.
Too rich for my blood..... I'm out.
I am interested in SACD and from what I've researched this player is quite acceptable in terms of overall sound quality. However, it will not give you the absolute quality of a high quality dedicated SACD player. As long as your expectations are reasonable it seems like a good deal if you can live with the huge ugly chrome button on the right side :-P
The button's not chrome. That's a trick of the pic angle. It's actually a dark satin grey.

For $500 I'd expect this to be able to play video on the network and my old HD-DVD discs too.
anantha doesnt play the tuba either.
Nope, I'll be sticking with my original DVD player. I'm not feeding the Blu-ray monster. Die Blu-ray, die.
Are people still buying BluRay? I though the Sony Ponies stopped buying them once they won they format war. Love that digital Distribution.
Yeah, love that digital distribution with its compression artifacts and medium-res audio. Special features? Never heard of 'em.
What amazes me is that people still think they're going to get mass distributable downloadable movies with acceptable picture and sound quality and a half reasonable selection anytime during the next decade. By all means, though...keep waiting.
I got mine 2 weeks ago and just by the packaging alone, I knew this was a special product.
It's gorgeous!!!
Nice weight, and the quality of build and performance is better then anything I have owned before.
Because you can't see and touch one in stores, many will comment on this unit without ever having a clue.
Don't bother.
This is all fine and well but where's the $99 BD player?
The $129 Blu Ray player is setting at walmart, waiting to become your Blu Ray player. Or the 99 dollar player if no one wants it.
Here, lazy ass.
http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/06/19/meijers-brand-new-99-shipped-blu-ray-player-brings-joy-to-sk/
Should I know who OPPO is?
A Bluray player with DVD player loading times. How can anyone not be all for this? Yes, it's expensive, but let's all hope that the technology they use trickles down. I don't know about you, but I think that the loading times for Bluray are ridiculous, and definitely a major hurdle to overcome before the general populace embraces the format.
"Let's see, I could play a DVD in a few seconds, or wait a minute or two for my Bluray to load up. I'll go with DVD."
@michael
You do realize the PS3 does play SACD right?
