OPPO's long-awaited BDP-83 universal Blu-ray player now shipping
It's been a long (long!) time coming, but we're thrilled to finally be able to say that OPPO's multifaceted BDP-83 is shipping en masse to those willing to part with five bills (or $500, for those working without conversion tables). During our time with the player, we were duly impressed with most every aspect, and if you're still on the hunt for a Blu-ray player that can spin DVD-Audio and SACD on the side, you'll be hard pressed to find a better option than this. So, who's taking the plunge?

It plays SACD, but not bit-perfect. SACD is 176 KHz sampling rate. optical out tops out at 88/96 KHz. If you have the equipment to notice it, your ears will hear the difference. If you are the type of person that likes to sit and listen to music with full concentration, track individual instruments or follow melodies, etc. SACD paired with good equipment will make a difference...if you are listening through tv speakers - not so much.
"It's got no USB ports, no ethernet ports and no WiFi."
FWIW, my PS3 has 4 usb ports, wifi, ethernet and no red ring of death.
SACD's sampling frequency is actually 2822.4 kHz, but as I understand it, you'd need a player that supports output of the DSD stream, along with an A/V receiver that supports it.
Got mine a few months ago. Nice player. Have the original player they came to market with. Their support is top notch and their hardware works as it should. Everything on this thing is sweet. Get one.

backed. it's also a great CD player (due to a high quality DAC) if you're into high-end audio.
Maybe Engadget should be giving a few away as the "Recession Antidote."

Already decided I'm skipping Blu-Ray.
Is it multi-region, or is the universality rather restricted?
I've been trying to find this out myself. So far my understanding is that it's region locked for both BR and DVD. They tried to get it unlocked for DVD but in order to be released as a BR they had to stick to certain guidelines one of which was no multi-region across any disc format. Which is a shame as I'd love to replace my current oppo with this as 50% of my collection is PAL. Oh well.
there is already free hacked firmware already for both BD and DVD multiregion and there is muliregion DIY equipment add-on that will allow official fw to be loaded also.
Nicceee. ... I like the SACD feature ... hi-rez audio + hi-rez vid
Good luck getting SACDs.

mehh. My panny bd-35 works just fine and certainly not for that price.
I'm holding out for Super Dupper Audio.
i've currently got an OPPO upconverting DVD player and I'm very happy with it. outstanding video quality, modest price. they're not well known...but those that have tried them generally like them. myself included.
Does anyone know if this is truly universal, as in "plays all regions" for blu-rays and DVD's? Cause the pre-release version was not able to play all regions.
The Oppo may cost more, but its up-scaling algorithm is simply better. I work in the Pro A/V industry, and we auditioned numerous up-scaling DVD players and the Oppo was clearly the best, especially with 1080 native displays. I ended up buying two for the office and one for myself. If and when I give in to BluRay, it will be Oppo for me!
When oh WHEN will they combine Divx Xvid MP4 VOB compatibility in a Blu-Ray player?
The oppo player plays all those formats either copy the files to a dvd or usb stick.
You can play stream them to the PS3 from a PC.
got mine last week. Bluray + Kuro plasma is an awesome combination. Using the analog outputs for HD audio as my receiver is old.
The BDP83 loads blurays quickly and does a nice job of upconverting DVDs to 1080p 24hz with the included Anchor Bay processor.
It would be nice to be able to play media files over the network, and it is possible they could include that in future firmware updates. As it is, it plays .mkv files flawlessly off a usb thumb stick or DVD.
Perhaps I'm way behind the times. Just why does Blu-Ray suck and what are y'all waiting for as the next big thing?
Downloadable movies are the wave of the future. Wait for it...any second now the internet will acquire the bandwidth to handle the sort of load that a mass market HD movie distribution network will require if it's selling as many movies as DVD and Blu-ray do. Aaaaaaany minute now...
500$ ru kidding ? and cheap bastards complaining about the ps3.
Well the player that comes close to this in terms of features, components and quality costs about 10x more (see Denon DVD-A1UD).
Oh wait, it's not available, yet.
PS3 is the best DVD player? Not even close. See the Denon DVD-3800BDCI or the Sony BDP-S500ES. Oppo has always had the best upconverting picture quality than any DVD player below the "high end" range, meaning, roughly, less than one or two thousand dollars. We will have to wait for the reviews (from high end audio visual equipment websites/magazines), though Oppo has always topped the reasonable price range DVD player category (especially for upconverting to 1080P-like quality from SD).
Best DVD player, hardly.
Best Bluray player, yeah.
And the Ps3 is too expensive. Hogwash I say.
No one who is interested in the PS3 as a Blu-ray player says it's too expensive. People who are interested in it as a game console say that, because as a game console, it IS too expensive. But you already knew that, given how obvious it is.
As always, there are those that have done their homework and understand why this player is what it is and why it costs 500.00. (a bargain at that)
Then there are those who rather sit on their asses, do nothing, bitch about the price, try to compare it with other devices, while not having a clue about what they are talking about.
Those that understand will buy, while those who cannot afford it, find excuses to not buy..
