Palm Pre official on O2 and Movistar in Europe, launch "in time for holidays"

Update: Seems as if O2 Germany has word that it'll be launching the GSM Pre in October.
Update 2: Hmm, seems as if O2 Germany has swapped out banners to show "Fall" availability. Make up your mind, won't you?

PRESS RELEASE: Palm Pre to Launch in Europe with O2 and Movistar
Palm webOS Phone to Arrive in UK, Ireland, Germany and Spain on Local Telefonica Networks
WINDSOR, England--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 07, 2009--
Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq:PALM) today announced that the Palm(R) Pre(TM) phone is scheduled to be available initially in the UK, Ireland and Germany exclusively on the O2 network, and in Spain exclusively on the Movistar network, in time for the holidays. Palm Pre, the first phone based on the new Palm webOS(TM) mobile platform, brings your information from the many places it resides -- on your phone, at work or on the web -- into one simple, integrated view.(1)
"Europe continues to be an important region for Palm, and we're proud to work with O2 and Movistar to spread the excitement Palm Pre has already ignited in North America," said Jon Rubinstein, Palm chairman and chief executive officer. "Since we showed Palm Pre at Mobile World Congress in February, there's been a great deal of anticipation for an announcement about European availability, and that day is here."
"We are fast becoming the home of the smartphone with the addition of the hotly-anticipated Palm Pre to our already extensive portfolio," said Matthew Key, chairman and chief executive officer, Telefonica Europe. "Our customers will be the first outside of North America to experience one of the most successful mobile devices of the year."
In its first weekend of availability in the United States, Palm Pre broke Sprint's previous first-weekend sales records. Palm Pre also is scheduled to debut in Canada with Bell Mobility in the second half of 2009.
Palm Pre introduces a breakthrough user interface and hardware design that makes it one of the most integrated and user-friendly mobile phones on the market. Featuring a smooth, elegantly rounded ergonomic design and a physical keyboard that slides out only when needed, Palm Pre is engineered to feel natural in your hand and comfortably small in your pocket. When closed, Palm Pre is ideal for phone calls, web browsing, music, photos and videos; when open, Palm Pre is optimized for email and text messaging. It provides an exceptional experience for phone calls, whether held to your ear, over speakerphone or via Bluetooth.
With its curved slider and gesture-controlled touch interface, Palm Pre fuses exquisite design with the revolutionary webOS software for fast access to content on the device or web. Invented exclusively for mobile use, webOS offers an instinctive user experience that seems to anticipate your needs.
Key Features and Benefits of Palm webOS
Palm Synergy(TM), a key feature of the new webOS, brings your information from all the places it resides into one logical view. You don't have to worry about tracking multiple calendars, contacts and messaging applications -- Synergy seems to think ahead to bring you a more comprehensive and truly representative view of your life.
-- Linked contacts -- With Synergy, you have a single view that links your
contacts from a variety of sources, so accessing them is easier than
ever. For example, if you have the same contact listed in your
Outlook(2), Google and Facebook accounts, Synergy recognizes that
they're the same person and links the information, presenting it to you
as one listing.
-- Layered calendars -- Your calendars can be seen on their own or layered
together in a single view, combining work, family, friends, sports teams
or other interests. You can toggle to look at one calendar at a time, or
see them all at a glance.
-- Combined messaging -- Synergy lets you see all your conversations with
the same person in a chat-style view, even if it started in IM and you
want to reply with text messaging. You can also see who's active in a
buddy list right from contacts or email, and start a new conversation
with just one touch.
By smartly integrating your information, webOS seems to think ahead for you to keep you on top of the things that happen in your life, but that's just the first step. The platform's unique interface brings your information to you with the ease that only Palm can offer.
-- Run multiple applications at the same time -- Palm's revolutionary webOS
lets you manage multiple activities more effectively than any other
mobile platform today. It lets you keep multiple activities open and
move easily between them like flipping through a deck of cards. You can
rearrange items simply by dragging them; when you are done with
something, just throw it away by flicking it off the top of the
screen.(3)
-- Information at your fingertips -- Finding what you need is easy with
universal search -- as you type what you're looking for, webOS narrows
your search and offers results from both your device and the web.(4)
-- Intuitive and unobtrusive notifications -- When important things come up
or new updates arrive, you'll receive notifications with a diplomacy
that's a radical departure from other mobile platforms. For example, if
you receive a text message or email, a scrolling notifications bar at
the bottom of your screen lets you address it right away or leave until
later. webOS alerts are one step ahead, ensuring that you never miss a
thing, but never lose your place or train of thought.

Look again. That picture has 'H' instead of 'Ev.' It's HSPA instead of Ev.Do
lol ok mr. thomas ricker changed it so NOW I LOOK LIKE THE IDIOT.
Thanks RICKER.
@dsteve303
It was inevitable.
*points and laughs*
*HA HA*
this would go great with my zune
Yes, if only Microsoft would get off their ass and finally officially release the Zune in Europe (well, pretty much anywhere other than North America). Seriously, how difficult is this to achieve?
How do they know when my holidays are?
through your tesco club card:D
hmm imo palm is doing it wrong...now don't get me wrong, i like palm and the pre, but i think they should just release the pre sim free, so anybody on any network can buy it without having to choose phone vs network...
i hope there's a palm pre-paid option in europe :)
But this way Palm (and Elevation Partners who has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in Palm) can get some money through these agreements now before selling a single phone. Think of poor Bono! He needs a return on his investment.
and O2 is one of the best networks in UK...
As far as the UK is concerned, I can't think of many (if any) phones which are initially released sim-free and then go on to sell well. It would be marketing suicide to go without carrier backing, especially for a company like Palm, which nowadays has pretty much zero presence in the UK other than O2 selling the Centro (but not bothering to promote it well).
@Orinjz
You can buy pretty much every handset you see on UK carriers SIM free from sites like Expansys, or direct from the manufacture. Some models you'll see carrier spesific branding, like T-Mobile badge HTCs as MDAs etc. There's no reason a handset can't be sold unlocked and also be sold locked (and subsidized) by carriers.
I buy almost all my handsets unlocked so I can test with other networks (I develop for WM).
So O2 has both the iPhone and the "iPhone" killer and BlackBerry models.
They must be signing some pretty hefty agreements with manufacturers.
And later this month the Samsung Galaxy too! :O Which is the one I'm waiting for :)
they're becoming the AT&T of euroland...having every smartphone os in their lineup...
If you think that the Palm Pre is an "iPhone Killer" then you'd be wrong - it is designed to be a Blackberry Killer and the iPhone would simply be collateral damage. You can tell this simply by looking at the device. The Pre has a physical keyboard which is an obvious sign that the device is designed for messaging. On the other hand, the iPhone is dominated by a screen and is designed for consuming media (preferably bought through the iTunes Store, of course).
Mind you, "Blackberry Killer" doesn't really have the same ring to it...
smart phone market is not a zero sum game right now. Pre doesn't have to kill the iphone anymore then RIM had to kill the iphone. the reality is most people don't have smart phones and most people aren't on a network that has iphones meaning there are a ton of buyers willing to not have an iphone. And last quarter i do believe iphone was actually only the number 2 most sold phone world wide behind i think a phone by samsung. possibly the blackjack but i'm not sure. i think that's the first time that's happened in a long time but it shows other phones can still make money/.
I have a pre and must admit it is not an iphone killer. Most people who I talk to have never seen it before. With the huge mindshare lead the iphone has and the terrible pre commercials, there is no way this will beat the iphone. I think it will be more like the storm or g1 in that it attracts a lot of people, especially those already on the network, but people will always think of the iphone as the best phone. I think I can be fairly ceetain when I say there will not be a true iphone killer for some time.
When will Palm release this in the US?
Pardon?
Are you serious? The Pre is already out in the US.
And don't even think that they'll release this GSM version there anytime soon. What with their exclusivity contract with Sprint and all...
@bolmedias: The Sprint-locked CDMA Pre is out. This announcement is for the GSM Pre, and my question remains the same, when will Palm release this in the US? Exclusivities be damned, Palm need to wise up. Android phones are coming, and that could mean disaster for Palm.
"Exclusivities be damned"? Someone needs to realize what contractual obligations mean. I doubt Palm wants Sprint to sue their asses.
you could wait for the palm eos on AT&T...
"Android phones are coming, and that could mean disaster for Palm."
Android phones are already here. Guess what... not so disastrous.
yeah seriously android phones are here and few people are buying them. and i'm on tmobile. i was hyped. then i saw them and passed
@be fearless: Hey, I forgot about the EOS. =D
@Kamal: I'm not talking about Sprint. I'm talking about Palm playing exclusivity in general. What Palm need most right now is userbase, and playing exclusivity is not helping.
@Gad Get: The G1 is nothing. Wait till Sony, Nokia, Samsung, etc releases theirs. Plus the rumors of Sony and Creative going Android for their PMPs. As a platform, Android will take off and Palm will be left in the dust if they don't act quick garnering userbase. Palm is 1 company. Android will be used by many.
Sorry for "dumb" question... What do Americans mean when they say "in time for the holidays"? I guess right before Christmas? Man that would suck if they just release it before Christmas, I don't wanna wait any longer!
It's an unspoken rule in many 'progressive' countries that rather than say "Christmas", you should say "Holidays", or "Holiday Season", or "Festive Season", or something equally ambiguous, so as not to offend anyone. Unfortunately, this principle is yet to be applied to the "Summer Holidays". I mean, not everyone believes in "Sum".
yes it means probably right after the American Holiday of Thanksgiving (end of November) right in time to get all the xmas shoppers. You'll see video games come out then, big DVDs, and some other big ticket items.
At least in Germany, there is no such holiday season like in the US, where everybody knows what is meant with the holiday season.
So it is kinda studip to release a press release with "holidays" as the only hint for a release date. This could mean everything... Summer holidays, Christmas holidays, etc.
And that's the point ;) The launch date could be ANYTHING!
They have failed so bad here.
They want the iphone killer, but like the iphone force ppl onto O2 instead of been on all networks.
Had they not done this they could have grabbed ALL customers none O2 and some from O2 not willing to pay the big $$ for the iphone.
Shame, if i goto O2 from orange it will be the iphone, if I stay on orange its the Hero then.
These American companies coming to Europe should stop their useless exclusive deals.
How about european companies make their own damn phones? How about instead of the iPhone, Palm Pre, Blackberry Storm, etc. you stick with the N97 as your go-to phone
How about you just buy a european phone instead, and let the american companies do what they please. Instead of considering an iPhone, or a Pre, or a blackberry, or an HTC phone, how about you stick with buying the rubbish that is the N97
Yeah, European carriers didn't have anything like an exclusive deal with manufacturers before the iPhone. Europeans are less likely to just stay with one carrier. When I went to the US last year, it was always like: I have a T-Mobile phone, an AT&T phone. I got there with an unlocked Sony Ericsson K800i, and they were all wondering where i got it. I had to explain to them that it was not a carrier subsidized phone where you could just pop in any SimCard you wanted to... Kinda weird and frightning that all these new hot touchscreen phones are all released exclusively on just ONE CARRIER. I hope that it's at least unlocked...
European companies coming to America should start using exclusivity deals.
Wow, that was a surprise... Oh well at least now we're sure of it!
Can't wait until the "holidays"
Well, O2 needed a way besides the iPhone to compete with upcoming stuff like the Hero on Orange and T-Mobile (as the G1Touch), and here it is.
On a side note, I think that now every major UK Network has at least one phone based on Linux. T-Mobile has the G1 and the G1Touch (their version of the Hero), Vodafone has the Magic, Orange has the Hero, and now O2 have the Pre. Oh wait, I forgot about 3. But no-one cares about 3, so yes, all major UK carriers have a Linux phone.
I'm going on holiday next week so I guess that means the Pre will be released this week. w00t!
what about Italy? we're the last wheel of the whole world
Always the last to receive new products....
so sad...
You can see some information on the o2 website now :)
http://shop.o2.co.uk/update/palmpre.html
Huzzah!
I hope it's not priced too steep.
We knew it anyway but atleast its official....epic fail
Thank you very much, whatever holidays that might be, but no thank you. They will have to sell it unlocked in a number of EU countries, and they'd be selling boatloads more if they just let consumers buy it subsidized from whomever they want.
Can't help it if 'mericans like to get rim-reamed by exclusive deals. I certainly won't be.
This may be a noob question but can some one tell me the holiday season means during time of Christmas.
Isn't that too far from now,so why r they making the annoucement in july.
Thanks in advance.
Holiday season means November or early December.
As to why, think about the end of their 6-month deal with Sprint; I'd guess the T-mobile USA and AT&T versions are the same hardware as the European GSM models (quad-band!), so they've timed production around that.
