Palm Pre official on O2 and Movistar in Europe, launch "in time for holidays"

Update: Seems as if O2 Germany has word that it'll be launching the GSM Pre in October.
Update 2: Hmm, seems as if O2 Germany has swapped out banners to show "Fall" availability. Make up your mind, won't you?

PRESS RELEASE: Palm Pre to Launch in Europe with O2 and Movistar
Palm webOS Phone to Arrive in UK, Ireland, Germany and Spain on Local Telefonica Networks
WINDSOR, England--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 07, 2009--
Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq:PALM) today announced that the Palm(R) Pre(TM) phone is scheduled to be available initially in the UK, Ireland and Germany exclusively on the O2 network, and in Spain exclusively on the Movistar network, in time for the holidays. Palm Pre, the first phone based on the new Palm webOS(TM) mobile platform, brings your information from the many places it resides -- on your phone, at work or on the web -- into one simple, integrated view.(1)
"Europe continues to be an important region for Palm, and we're proud to work with O2 and Movistar to spread the excitement Palm Pre has already ignited in North America," said Jon Rubinstein, Palm chairman and chief executive officer. "Since we showed Palm Pre at Mobile World Congress in February, there's been a great deal of anticipation for an announcement about European availability, and that day is here."
"We are fast becoming the home of the smartphone with the addition of the hotly-anticipated Palm Pre to our already extensive portfolio," said Matthew Key, chairman and chief executive officer, Telefonica Europe. "Our customers will be the first outside of North America to experience one of the most successful mobile devices of the year."
In its first weekend of availability in the United States, Palm Pre broke Sprint's previous first-weekend sales records. Palm Pre also is scheduled to debut in Canada with Bell Mobility in the second half of 2009.
Palm Pre introduces a breakthrough user interface and hardware design that makes it one of the most integrated and user-friendly mobile phones on the market. Featuring a smooth, elegantly rounded ergonomic design and a physical keyboard that slides out only when needed, Palm Pre is engineered to feel natural in your hand and comfortably small in your pocket. When closed, Palm Pre is ideal for phone calls, web browsing, music, photos and videos; when open, Palm Pre is optimized for email and text messaging. It provides an exceptional experience for phone calls, whether held to your ear, over speakerphone or via Bluetooth.
With its curved slider and gesture-controlled touch interface, Palm Pre fuses exquisite design with the revolutionary webOS software for fast access to content on the device or web. Invented exclusively for mobile use, webOS offers an instinctive user experience that seems to anticipate your needs.
Key Features and Benefits of Palm webOS
Palm Synergy(TM), a key feature of the new webOS, brings your information from all the places it resides into one logical view. You don't have to worry about tracking multiple calendars, contacts and messaging applications -- Synergy seems to think ahead to bring you a more comprehensive and truly representative view of your life.
-- Linked contacts -- With Synergy, you have a single view that links your
contacts from a variety of sources, so accessing them is easier than
ever. For example, if you have the same contact listed in your
Outlook(2), Google and Facebook accounts, Synergy recognizes that
they're the same person and links the information, presenting it to you
as one listing.
-- Layered calendars -- Your calendars can be seen on their own or layered
together in a single view, combining work, family, friends, sports teams
or other interests. You can toggle to look at one calendar at a time, or
see them all at a glance.
-- Combined messaging -- Synergy lets you see all your conversations with
the same person in a chat-style view, even if it started in IM and you
want to reply with text messaging. You can also see who's active in a
buddy list right from contacts or email, and start a new conversation
with just one touch.
By smartly integrating your information, webOS seems to think ahead for you to keep you on top of the things that happen in your life, but that's just the first step. The platform's unique interface brings your information to you with the ease that only Palm can offer.
-- Run multiple applications at the same time -- Palm's revolutionary webOS
lets you manage multiple activities more effectively than any other
mobile platform today. It lets you keep multiple activities open and
move easily between them like flipping through a deck of cards. You can
rearrange items simply by dragging them; when you are done with
something, just throw it away by flicking it off the top of the
screen.(3)
-- Information at your fingertips -- Finding what you need is easy with
universal search -- as you type what you're looking for, webOS narrows
your search and offers results from both your device and the web.(4)
-- Intuitive and unobtrusive notifications -- When important things come up
or new updates arrive, you'll receive notifications with a diplomacy
that's a radical departure from other mobile platforms. For example, if
you receive a text message or email, a scrolling notifications bar at
the bottom of your screen lets you address it right away or leave until
later. webOS alerts are one step ahead, ensuring that you never miss a
thing, but never lose your place or train of thought.

Does O2 really think people would buy this cheap looking plastic phone? :)
Poor old Jorge. So desperate to be noticed, but his attempt at stirring up controversy just makes him look like he's wearing a t-shirt emblazoned, "#1 Lamer."
Well, in fairness to Jorge, the Pre does indeed look like a "cheap plastic phone". I'm not sure anyone will really argue against that. When you compare the Pre to devices being released by the likes of Samsung, Sony, etc., it's not much of a looker. Of course, what is most important is the software that is running on the device rather than its physical appearance but it is a fair point that the Pre isn't the best looking device and that this might hold back its sales. Let's be honest, a heck of a lot of people buy a cellular telephone as a fashion accessory.

Well, in all fairness to Jorge, the Palm Pre does indeed look like a "cheap looking plastic phone". I don't think anyone will argue against that when compared to devices being produced by the likes of Samsung, Sony, etc. What should be important is the software running on it but since quite a lot of people buy their cellular telephones as fashion accessories the appearance of the Pre may indeed hold back its sales. It's certainly not the best looking device out there now and not by a long shot, although it isn't exactly ugly either.
Ah crap - buggered by the Engadget comment system, again...
Sorry, folks.
Ah crap - buggered by the Engadget comment system, again...
Sorry, folks.
You clearly don't have good sense of humor. :) Seriously, I didn't realize how cheap the phone case and keyboard was until I hold one at the local store. I would never bring this cheap plastic phone to my date. :)
I dont know, I would really help Palm and buy their Phone but......
Now it seems so old and so yesterday. With the new HTC Phones coming out, I dont know what to buy and WebOS doesnt have as many Apps as the Iphone oder Android.
I'd suggest waiting 6-months or so before making the decision if you cannot decide against the different platforms today. You can't really judge the webOS platform until the SDK has been officially released and developers have had it for a decent period of time. If in 6-months the webOS doesn't seem to be gaining much traction and/or does not have any applications available for it that you are interested in then by all means write it off and go for one of the alternatives. Some people may suggest waiting longer but 6-month is probably long enough.
So that's the Pre exclusive to O2. And probably the Samsung Galaxy as well. 2 big competitors to the iPhone.
More evidence that O2's iPhone exclusive in the UK may end later this year?
Interesting! The screenshot of the German add on Engadget still says "from October", whereas the actual banner on the o2 Germany page now says "in autumn".
Either someone made up a month and now they realized, or someone let slip the exact date as it is planned at the moment, and they didn't really want to let it slip.
My guess is the latter - they're currently aiming for October all over Europe, but there might be shortages/problems/strategic decisions to tweak the date, which is why they don't want to commit.
Still, even the German "autumn" that they have now is more than the press release originally confirmed.

The o2 website now says "in time for Christmas".
The press release states the launch date as the definitive "before the holidays", but at least O2 Germany are more specific and claim they'll have the Palm Pre in October. UK, Ireland and Spain can probably expect to receive the same treatment.
September was sort of a deadline for the GSM Pre for me, and now: I bet they'll even miss Christmas trade in the end. Looks like I'll have get an iPhone 3GS now, at least if they finally have the keyboard autocorrection fixed (not the on-off function, dear fanboys, I mean this completely buggy autocorrection itself). At the moment this does not look too bad, but I'll need a certain time to test this...
yes me too. Unfortunately my cutoff date is end of july for a new phone. Damn them and their lack of stock/international rollout. I think availability will be more of an issue in their ability to compete than any hardware/software/appstore. I guess I will be on a 3gs for the next year.
I've been waiting patiently since February and I had a deadline for the end of September as well... frankly there's to many new and exciting phones appearing soon (ish) to say the Pre will be my next purchase.. Come "the holidays" Android Donut could be out in a nice form factor (Xperia anyone? Perhaps something with a slider) so why choose a phone that's already at least 6 months old? It's a shame because I really like the look of webOS.
Slap me senseless - that banner HAS to be alive! After the correction, they have now corrected the correction - it now says "in time for christmas", just like everywhere else.
I'll grab some popcorn and watch as this thing mutates - they might change it as we speak :)
Hey, I just got the e-mail message from Palm, that the Pre would be available "shortly" (the one I had subscribed to for they would inform me if the phone is available). Either this is a complete mess, or they are kidding us...
"Freuen Sie sich schon? Es dauert nicht mehr lange.
Das neue Palm® Pre™ Telefon ist in Kürze im Netz von O2 verfügbar. Palm Pre.
Voraus zu denken ist schon was Tolles. Weitere Informationen"

According to the UMTS firmware in the leaked webOS code, the GSM Pre uses the Qualcomm MSM 6260, which will indeed support 850/1900/2100 HSDPA at 3.6Mbps. It will support North American 3G.
how about Verizon? January?
