PSP2 to be based on iPhone-esque PowerVR GPU, rival original Xbox in power?
If Sony's PSPgo was some halfhearted attempt to quell incessant PSP2 rumoring (and our favorite PSP2 mockup render, above), it certainly doesn't seem to have worked. The new rumor out and about is that the inevitable PSP2 will harbor a PowerVR GPU along the lines of what's present in the new iPhone 3GS. The SGX543MP cited has four cores, with a rating of 133 million polygons per second at the low-end 200MHz mode that seems likely for portable use. GamesIndustry.biz calls this a "ballpark match" for the original Xbox, with some additional Dreamcast rendering enhancements for avoiding wasting time on hidden elements in a scene. They also point out that Imagination Technologies calls the chip a GP-GPU, capable of handling computing tasks in addition to graphics, and potentially giving the PSP2 the power savings of not needing a separate CPU to operate. Sure, it's all a difficult to pin down rumor at the moment, but if anything these sort of specs show what's possible for a new generation of handheld gaming when the likes of Sony and Nintendo are ready to give it to us. Now about a second analog stick...

NOT FIRST!
anyway, if this is true, then I want it... a touch screen and a decent web browser would be nice though :)
why do you care about that stupid shit for a gaming console. just get a smart phone for browsing
I don't think it's gonna happen. By the time PSP2 comes out, if ever, the TI cortex9 or above, will have been the dominating SOC. Why would Sony go with TI's cortex8?
@ annoying: you live up to your name.
anyway, why not have a browser? god forbid you carry two devices with browsing capability. anyway i'm sure it will have a browser since the psp has one.
what i want in the psp2:
-clamshell design (that render is beautiful, but clamshell protects the screen)
-about 5" touchscreen @ 800x480
-dual analog, with the analog sticks preferably higher on the control area (similar to Pandora)
actually now that i think about it, i basically want a Pandora with better performance (native games), but probably no keyboard.
Not really much of a PSP guy, but I really like that 3D mock up. Props to whoever made it originally.
Yeah, maybe sony should take the hint, scrap the pspgo altogether and just go for something like that.
It's still not that comfortable of a hand held from the looks of it.
Sony, Are you listening?! This is what we (paying consumers) want!! Hire whoever made this render as master hardware designer!
This is a very old mockup, what people were hoping the PSP-2000 would look like.
So because its an old mock-up, we shouldn't want it? Well now its PSP-2010.
Who said that? Don't put words in my mouth I'm just letting everyone know it's an old fan mockup. I like the idea personally and with the new OLED screens it could certainly be a possibility. I think it might be painful to hold after a while but the dual analoge sticks would be worth it.
Sony should toss the PSP-go and develop something along the lines of the rendering above.
Wonder how this will compare to tegra....
This will blow away Tegra's 3D graphics.. at least the current model used in smartphones.
Rival original Xbox? Doubt it...
same here
Why doesn't the rumor have the PSP2 rival the original PS2? The penultimate Playstation is a Sony product and somewhat successful in its own right?
cause the orig xbox was more powerful then the ps2
Do you realize how far computing has come since the original XBox? And how far off the PSP2 may be? Why in the world would you "doubt it?"
The PSP is around as powerful as the PS2. So the XBox would be a half step up from the current PSP performance.
Technology moves quickly, people. Whoever thought 10 years ago that phones would be just as powerful as desktop computers at that time?
umm this thing is going to be practically a miniature ps2. And considering how die shrinks we've had since the ps2's last revision(2004) i wouldn't be surprised if they were able to make a low power chip that was more powerful than the xbox, and incase you were wondering the xbox was powered by the geforce3, yeah that ancient thing. On top of that it was paired DDR memory, a f***in netbook is factors more powerful than an xbox. So DDR vs DDR2? DDR3? GDDR3? GDDR5? They can easily make something more powerful it comes down to how cheap they want to build it, and how acceptably fast can it drain whatever battery they want to use.
It'd be absolutely stupid to release a handheld that is equivalent to the Xbox. That isn't much of a step at all. The wii equivalent, if anything, would be better. I mean, come one, the PSP is basically a mini PS2 (just look at GTA stories, SCIV equiv, Crisis Core, GoW). And it was released in 2004 for crying at loud. If they were going to be so lame, why not skip the Go and just get on with it.
Surely they could do better as an Xbox capable portable would be something more up nintendo's line, now.
am i the only one who still plays with the psp phat? (even tho its hacked to pieces) :)
Nope, I never bothered upgrading to the thin PSP. I haven't used it for a long time though, so I guess that might make you the only one that still PLAYS it. Maybe. I still have it though :)
I play my phat from time to time, so you're not alone. I bought a slim so I could hack my phat, but ended up doing both once I realized you could.
... man, this comment sounds weird. PSPs! I'm talking about PSPs.
multi touch?
I'll start caring about the PSP again when Sony figures out how to include a second analog stick.
And i'll stop laughing at all the clueless idiots that have been instructed what to think by Joystiq and Kotaku.
Seriously, do you have a mind of your own?
i don't read those site, and i share his views. control schemes just don't seem to work with one analog stick alone. Playing ratchet and clank just feels awkward, especially when my thumb keeps reaching for a stick that isn't there
Yes, you are right, your handwriting is terrible.
This design is much better than the put-together look of the PSPGo. If it wasn't for the upcoming PS3 slim, I would definitely mark Sony off my gadgetry list permanently. I still may have to if they release the PSPGo and then the PSP2.
Is that because they are _forcing_ you to buy the PSPgo? Be stong, use your "Wilpower" to resist.
Simon, I will take your advice!
Hey hey now! Sony had to figure out what to do with that Mylo plant.
@Simon
The Force is strong in this one.
I am not a psp fan, but if the psp2 looks like the picture above, I will buy 3.
Would you shut up?

I love the rendered design so much better than the PSP go (away)
Why everything have to be compare to Apple's STUPID iphone?
I didn't think that the iPhone could compete, although the platform is next in line, in an arena that has so many dominate players. Now I hope that Apple and iPhone developers really get serious so they can take market share in this area. Gaming platform are going from great to slap-together consoles just cause they can b/c there's no real competition.
I know right, because comparing a phone that supports OpenGL (Open Graphics Library) for Graphics and that has stressed 3D graphics and also has a similar unit is downright stupid. Paul Miller should be fired, or atleast go back to 1st grade and learn to compare apples and oranges amirite?
Why do you have to bitch whenever the iPhone is mentioned?
u r first who is not going to be laid...
Feel better, Adrian? You got one. Now you can stop.
I still have a PowerVR card (a Kyro II), two if you count the Dreamcast. Only reason I'm not still using it is that it isn't compatible with the motherboard in my desktop. Pity all you ever hear about are ATi and Nvidia these days.
You mean nVidia, right? ATi hasn't done anything really noteworthy since the (late) introduction of CrossFire.
My only beef with nVidia (now) is that I can't correct the overscan on my HDTV easily without some hackery. My brother's ATi card can do that with the CCC no problem. Lame.
SiLo, if you're going to insist on proper capitalization, they call themselves "NVIDIA" in all caps these days.
Well, after seeing what Sony did with the PSP releasing the PSPGo, I've lost all hope. I think Sony it still behaving like dinosaurs of a business era long gone, "they'd have to buy whatever we put out, they have no choice."
