PSP2 to be based on iPhone-esque PowerVR GPU, rival original Xbox in power?
If Sony's PSPgo was some halfhearted attempt to quell incessant PSP2 rumoring (and our favorite PSP2 mockup render, above), it certainly doesn't seem to have worked. The new rumor out and about is that the inevitable PSP2 will harbor a PowerVR GPU along the lines of what's present in the new iPhone 3GS. The SGX543MP cited has four cores, with a rating of 133 million polygons per second at the low-end 200MHz mode that seems likely for portable use. GamesIndustry.biz calls this a "ballpark match" for the original Xbox, with some additional Dreamcast rendering enhancements for avoiding wasting time on hidden elements in a scene. They also point out that Imagination Technologies calls the chip a GP-GPU, capable of handling computing tasks in addition to graphics, and potentially giving the PSP2 the power savings of not needing a separate CPU to operate. Sure, it's all a difficult to pin down rumor at the moment, but if anything these sort of specs show what's possible for a new generation of handheld gaming when the likes of Sony and Nintendo are ready to give it to us. Now about a second analog stick...

will it cause global warming and forest fires?
Most Definitely!
hope they can put custom firmwares on this, Halo on the PSP would be awesome
That would really be the bee's knees!
Hasn't anyone been listening to me post here for MONTHS about the new psp2? It is not a rumor it is true, you all will see in spring 2011. Advanced Remote Play that lets you play ANY Ps3 game on the PSP2, Dual nubs for precise control. Multiple input devices connected at once via BlueFi(bluetooth and wifi). As much processing power as a ps2 and a xbox combined. Slider/touchscreen/motion control. Built in 8.1Mp cam. Telephony.
Don't make me say in one and a half years, I told ya so.
I'd hope that in 1 1/2 years that'd be outdated (all that is what's hot right now, much like the ipod 2G was a year and a half ago)
I was riding along with you until you said 8.1mp camera. Yeah, right. However, I will humbly accept your "I told you so" if it ends up being true.
You sound like some 8 year old that's desperate for attention.
"8.1 MPX CAMERA, TELEPHONY, WILL BE ABLE TO PLAY ANNNY PS3 GAME@!@"
Postal, I agree 8Mpx is stupid.
But Remote Play for PS3 games is plausible because the existing PSP can already play PS3 games, the game remains in the PS3 and the computation is done on the PS3, with the PSP being the controller and the screen. It is a lot like a VNC for game systems. That said, I don't think it's worthwhile, if you have a PS3 on your network, you might as well just play the PS3 directly.
See what they did there? The usual subtle but deliberate Weblogs trick.
Just prior to PSPGo launch, they invent some PSP2 rumour.
You masters back at Redmond are very happy with you.
I'm confused wouldn't they refer to it as a CP-GPU or a GP-CPU? GP-GPU sounds a little redundant.
I think one of the reasons ppl are so disgusted about the psp go, is this awesome photoshop pic engadget keeps on posting lol
Required feature list:
Capacitive Touch Screen
Flash enabled browser
sync with iTunes
vibration/rumble
Roughly same price as iPod touch
Then I'll drop $$ first day
Dream on my friend. Dream on.
Seriously, you guys really need to start looking at the price performance ratio. Think of the price of an unlocked iPhone for a second. Are you really gonna pay no less that $300 just to own a portable gaming system? Of course, the "additional cost" of adding in such features may go down significantly by then, but still. Geez, I remember people asking for those same features on the PSPgo (when it was the rumored PSP2).
yea so any TRUE PSP2 news wont be out until at LEAST TGS 2010....but we all know its coming and will most likely have 2 version....one WITH UMD and One without.....but the starting price point will most certainly be around $250....
Wouldn't nVidia's Tegra work for something like this?
Imagine the device above, with a slide out keyboard on one side and a slide out game pad other another side. Then add smart camera/video phone capabilities. Boom! PSP Phone!
what... first twat?!
Looking forward to the PSP2. Hope Nintendo has something in the works. Something next-gen I hope.
Where's the portable Microsoft console? I want that, although a PSP 2 sounds enticing.
Matt: GP-GPU stands for general purpose GPU, which makes a tiny bit more sense.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH it's that render again!!!
most famous render ever? Sony out of Japanese pride won't make their PSP2 look like this now, they'd be seen as Johnny Come Latelys. But I wouldn't be surprised if they don't take the spirit of the rendered image and improve upon it.
apparently $NE doesnt care about what people want for psp2, I wont bother. also, M$ doesnt care about what people want either, that's why we have this stupid zuneHD instead of a handheld from M$. nintendo still wants to cash in on NDSL and NDSi when apple refused to include real control on iphone/ipod touch...
Seeing as I haven't seen any official PSP2 information anywhere, I gotta know how do you know that Sony doesn't care about what the consumers want?
UMD, MiniDisc, BetaMax.. I don't know.. maybe their history of doing what they want consumer be dammed?
Sony is the proprietary God. I have a Memory Stick Pro I used for a camera that is now useless unless i get another CyberShot, no one ever conveniently has a Sony Ericsson charger, and since everyone else uses SDs I can't ever share stuff with anyone. The phone was free tho so...I guess I got what I paid for....
I'll never accept those shoddy d pad controls for serious gaming. Back in the coin-op days there was a different control for every game. You could barely control Donkey Kong with those control pads. Forget about enjoying a game of Asteroids, Street Fighter or Pac-man. I obviously haven't bought into the playstation or xbox fad. Those controls are a turn off for me.
buy a peripheral that fits your needs cause your missing out on some fun games
Am I thinking what I thought I just read!! 200Mhz? That's WEAKER THAN THE PSP1's CPU! Don't even mention a iPhone 3GS (sorry, I had to, it plays games)! I give up. When Apple makes a handheld game console, I'm getting it. Heck, I want to get an iPhone!
But mabye thats because I don't have a phone and I like all-in-one devices.
Do you know how to read?!
That clock is for the graphics. It means 200Mhz for every core and it is rumoured to have four of them(for comparisong iphone probably has 100Mhz clock for one core GPU). We don't know anything about the CPU but believe iPhone won't stand a chance...
Yeah, you fail at reading.
Also, LOL @ not having a phone
gb2 1995
Ok, so I failed at understanding here.
So lets see................200Mhz core x4 = 800Mhz. Wow.
That was the GPU, wasn't it?
From what I've read about the iPhone 3GS, it has an 833MHz GPU underclocked to 600Mhz. So unless Sony underclocks their PSP2, it will have a stronger GPU. Except by the time the PSP2 comes out, there will be a iPhone 4G (lolz), which might have a 1Ghz CPU (its possible, I read this one Sony phone had it).
But then again, PSP2 will probably be better because of hardware controls, unless iPhone 4G gets hardware controls. Then we would see some intersting competition.
You mean Allah says all parts of the system must run the same clock speed?
Shit. Then I really don't want an IRDA port on anything... you know, since that feature _requires_ the CPU run at 4MHz--or 115.2kHz.
@Derek
I was just making a rounded guess. Are you trying to say it can go OVER its projected speed?
And thanks for the religious comment.
@Everyone
PSP needs an App store badly.
The 3GS has a 600MHz CPU, not GPU (an ARM Cortex A8). The GPU is a PowerVR SGX (not sure what it's clocked at, I think 100MHz).
I'll bet I wasn't the FIRST to vote your comment down!
Barra barra.
Towel-heads.
can we just stop? it's sony. We all know that they barely upgrade the product line. I'm betting that the next PSP will have some wierd coding on it's files that sony will brag about, more proprietary crap. On top of that, they barely ever upgrade anything substantially.
Stop replying to his comment if what you're saying has nothing to do with what he said!
People reply to the first comment because it will be seen more, and want people to see what they write. But then there's the "first" people who have nothing to say accept to show how juvenile and annoying they are.
I would be such a PSP fanboy if they added a second analog stick to the PSP2. Playing SOCOM or any FP shooter sucks with a single analog stick.
But then they'll forget the dual analog sticks.....
They shouldn't even announced the PspGo and gone with this!! PSPGo is a rip off!! seriously!
It can be as powerful as an Xbox 360, but if it doesn't have a second analog stick I probably won't buy it.
Adrian (with a capital A) your making me (adrian) look foolish with the first comment. Other members please note the difference in the future.
Such a big sigh of releaf as well as a glimpse of hope. The psp go seems pathetic and doesn't live up to the full potential of the psp. If this thing is in consideration, they should make that big beautiful screen touch sensitive.
How can i forget? The second analog stick is a definate plus!
Well, I'm up for it. I guess having a second analog stick I don't mind, just hope they don't include R2/3 and L2/3, because even though the PSP aim for a hardcore audience, but put to much cr**, it will lose the purpose, you know, portable.
