Sony unveils two new 1080p Handycams
Nothing too remarkable about Sony's latest HD camcorders, but the new 64GB HDR-CX520V and 32GB HDR-CX500V are solid updates nonetheless. Identical apart from the built-in storage, both feature an Exmor R CMOS sensor with BIONZ processing that should offer solid low-light performance and decent 12 megapixel stills, Optical SteadyShot with a new active mode and three-way shake cancellation, Face Touch autofocus that allows you to simply point at faces to prioritize focus in order, and, most notably, 60p output, which'll interpolate your footage to 60 progressive frames per second when connected to a compatible HDTV. Not a bad piece of kit, but they'll cost ya: the HDR-CX500V will run $1,100 and the HDR-CX520V will be $1,300 when they arrive in September.

Are we really calling a 1080i camcorder 1080p if it has an upscaler? Christ, I have some 1080p YouTube videos to sell you.
yeah! what he said!
"For optimal playback, the HDR-CX520V and HDR-CX500V camcorders feature 60p output, which automatically converts content to 60 progressive frames per second when connected to a compatible high-definition television."
Sounds like it captures 1080p while the "scaler" just adds frames for smoother playback, but it's not very clear.
"Sony today announced its new HDR-CX520V and HDR-CX500V Handycam® camcorders, which capture full1920x1080 high-definition video and up to 12-megapixel photos on a 64GB or 32GB internal flash memory, respectively, offering up to 25 hours of HD video (LP mode)."
Please learn how to read.
On second glance, it seems engadget is just trying to confuse us. Nowhere in the article does it mention upscaling. 60p refers to the fps output. So my guess is that it records 1080p @ 30fps.
"the HDR-CX500V will run $1,100 and the HDR-CX520V will be $1,300".
"No-no-no-no-no-no-no! Dat is your price, what is my price?
And so the 14th street, price dance begins...
Why not 24p/48p stupid sony
because 99.5% of people either
a) dont care, or
b) want it to look like video and not film, or
c) dont have a 24p display
>> "dont have a 24p display"
WTF is a 24p display?
I'm tired of hearing about 24p.
24p is only for wanna-be poseur film-makers. And most of them aren't in the market for Handycams. Wrong market, since they are better off buying the Panasonic GH-1 dSLR that has interchangeable lenses and DOF control for around the same price as this camera.
$1,100 and $1,300 is expensive for a handycam.
No, not too expensive, at least not for Sony, since their HD handycams are usually around this price.
But... that much for a handycam without a viewfinder... now that's too expensive.
I just want true 60fps at 1080p. 24fps looks like shit anyway. I did some tests at home on my Canon HR? and while 24p looked good on a static shot any movement made it jerky and made me dizzy.
Can iz ducttape two towgefr to makes it stereomascopic lulzorz.
Yup, pretty sure you need to buy an adapter from Sony to do that though.
At least they didn't put it on a DSLR
That would be too convenient.
Still no headphone jack for private listening? I'd like to be able to play back what I recorded when I'm out and about without everyone else around me hearing or being disturbed by it all.
No headphone jack, no sale.
handycans seems much more convenience than camcorder
anyway, but how to convert m2ts video to common mp4 or wmv, 3gp is a problem to share HD video like MOD, TOD, MTS on youtube.

I'm still waiting for Sanyo's Xacti VPC-HD2000. I can't wait for an official US release.
Does it record .avi files? I'm so sick of having to convert those .m2ts files to editable formats.

I think that those Handy-cams are not 12MP, maybe 6 or less MP.
I have a Sony HDR-CX11 and it has "10MP" but i think its less than that maybe 5mp or less. Cause if you look at the stils its a very bed Quality image like it was stretched.
They are laying about the Mpixles.
About the 24fps. Movies use it because it takes less time to edit frames. It also takes them less frames to render the movie.
