OCZ cranks clock speed, DRAM on Vertex Turbo SSD
While every other solid state drive maker is thinking of snazzy new model names to slap on their next-gen wares, OCZ Technology is actually breaking up the monotony with its Vertex Turbo SSD. While we won't go so far as to say that these things are overclocked ('cause let's face it, they aren't), OCZ has bumped the core clock speed and the SDR DRAM cache to 180MHz (compared to 166MHz on the original). These drives also posses a custom firmware designed specifically for performance junkies, and the company claims that users will see read and write speeds of up to 270MBps and 210MBps, respectively. We're still waiting to hear back on pricing, but you can expect capacities of 30GB (32), 60GB (64), 120GB (128), and 250GB (256) to hit the shelves in short order.
Update: We've just received pricing from OCZ:

tasty.
Leave.
You are last
please don't be pricey!
OCZ? SSD? New?
Oh it'll be pricey, but will it be worth it?
Far less pricey than Intel Per GB!
OCZ's Vertex was the best computer parts purchase I made in the last 5 years. I can't imagine running my computer without it. The speed of programs loading and boot-up times are just amazing. If I had to build another system I would spend less on all other components before skipping this drive.
Sigh, I bet you don't live in the UK.
agreed! I picked up a slightly used 30g Vertex for 52$ shipped off one of the hardware forums. As a win7x64 boot drive the thing just flies. :-D
The OCZ Vertex drive is great, as are all the other drives based on the Indilinx, Intel, or newest Samsung controller.
If you want a Vertex, but want to save some money, the Patriot Torqx is a hardware clone of the Vertex with different firmware that performs within 1-2% of the Vertex, but you can pick a 120GB unit up for $299 with rebate at Newegg.com
This would bring the new MacBook Pro 13.3" to its knees!
Ahhh, but my 13" Macbook Pro running the previous version of the Vertex brings me to my knees! 60 GB for MacOS and 60GB for Win 7 makes me so warm and fuzzy inside. So, so fast, me so so happy.
who cares how fast still expensive........:-(
Traditional disk drives are plenty fast (not to mention cheap and spacious) until the prices on these become reasonable.
Reasonable?
Just two years ago a slow 64GB SSD cost $1500. Now you can a top-line drive four times bigger and with three times the performance for half the price. You can get a 250GB drive with indilinx controller like the OCZ Vertex for under $700.
Similarly, you can get a super faster 120GB drive using a great SSD controller like the OCZ Vertex / Corsair P128 / Patriot Torqx / Super Talent UltradriveME for around $350 online. That is *10X* CHEAPER PER GIGABYTE than a 64GB Samsung/Mtron/etc from two years ago.
You have to quit comparing these to harddrives. Any of these SSDs greatly improve your computer experience. And It doesn't make sense that people will spend thousands of dollars on their computers, with $500 GPUs every two years, but they won't spend a couple hundred bucks for a superfast SSD boot drive or laptop drive.
Agreed. Though for a desktop I think you need to look at having TWO drives for a while.
A boot drive, which is big enough for your OS and Programs. If you're honest about things you probably don't need more than 60GB or so for this unless you multi-boot. So an 80GB/100GB/120GB/128GB SSD drive is just fine.
The second drive is your spinning media, houses your documents, folders, music, video etc. Sure its a little slower, but you can have a Gig or Two for not much over $100.
Combine the two and you have the perfect desktop. Fuck RAID 0 configurations and such. Those days are past.
Now for a laptop you sorta have to pick just one, which means you want an SSD AND you want it to be spacious. Which means $$$. But since you reboot it more often you want the performance it brings even more. The power savings are just a bonus.
i like it, i love it...i want some more of it
who gives a crap about the totally useless benchmark of sequential read and write speeds.
USELESS DRIVEL!!!!!!
what is the real world speed?
and by that i mean random read and random write.
since almost nothing done on a computer is large sequential reads or writes, i dont give a shit about their e-peen bragging numbers,
I want the numbers that MEAN something.
The regular OCZ Vertex has about the best random read/write short of the Intel drives. If they have similar firmware and just higher clock speeds on the Vertex Turbo, I imagine it will be good.
except that one of the ways to increase the sequential speeds ios to change performance algorithms to FAVOR those types of speed tests which also is detrimental to the random performance.
of course this is easily seen in the original vertex drives which before release were much faster in the SR/W metrics and worse in the RR/W metrics.
However to bump the RR/W metrics there was a subsequent lowering of the SR/W metric when the firmware was changed.
Thus, if you want to really advertise something that is relevant and not simply e-peen stretching and useless, you would publish the RR/W numbers and a simple comparison to other drives including rotational platter drives (which are at least 2 orders of magnitude slower).
oh. and the vertex, while significantly faster than the rotational drives, was still an order of magnitude slower than the intel drives.
which is why anyone truly using these drives for speed, is using the intel ones.
like in high volume db servers and the like.
The price difference between the Vertex and X-25M reflect their real world differences in performance. You get what you pay for, but most people aren't willing to pay $300 for a drive. This is a great option for those looking for great performance at a slightly more management price.
more like sloppy second
kill yourself loser
i think the 32 would get me by, but i think 64 gig is perfect, to bad these will still be out of my price range, but one day! 1 day.
Up with Speed\Capacity
Down with Price !!!!
"While we won't go so far as to say that these things are overclocked ('cause let's face it, they aren't)"
Come on of course they overclocked it, just like how I can change the repeat rate on my keyboard and overclock that!
Either way impressive R/W transfer rates. If I had a stupid amount of cash just sitting around I would totally drop one of these in a lappy with Win7. However since I don't I will have to settle for a 500GB 7200 spinner instead.
I would love to have one of these - has anyone seen the youtube video of the guy that hooked up 32 of the the Samsung drives to 1 PC. It's crazy!!!!
Make the 32gig cheap! Seriously just to have a 32 for Windows + most used apps would be amazing.
Listen.
All these new postings on products without the BASIC info like PRICE or CPU used or release date etc are just so dumb.
If you are the manufacturer, just give the damn info and stop those games.
As if it ads to the interest...
Looks nice.
any SSD that affordable to us ?
that come with good write speed and read ?
that make sense to us to leave the old hdd ?
that big enuf ?
nothing right :P
SSD's are high performance items. Like performance parts for your car, they are not wal-mart cheap stock yet. In time they will be. You get what you pay for, if you want the fastest performance, and theoretically more reliable, this is the ticket.
Also... I remember paying $1000 for a 500 MEG server drive years ago - when a grand meant something.
is engadget sponsored by ocz? as they are 1 of the few manufacturers that have their drives advertised on here, the gskill falcon drives are the same as the ocz vertex drives and cost WAY less and yet engadget hasn't said a word about those drives.
(no, this is not the same sam):
it is probably just a matter of who sends out press releases. I'd assume most/all of engadget product news is recycled press releases. If g-skill don't send out releases, that would be why.
(of course, there will be a degree of filtering, I'm sure they don't do a post on every single release that comes their way...)
Second place is FIRST looser.
Don't worry, Qwack. I think you're okay. A little misguided, but that's no reason to kill yourself.
What are you doing later? Want to hang out?
Aviv00, RunCore SSD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had a OCZ Vertex 60G and was incredibly fast... unfortunately I discovered I cannot live anymore with such a little drive and cant afford the 250G one of obvious reasons.
I just hope in 12-18 months we can see this kind of drives in a lower price range so everyone can ENJOY them. If you can pay for it or if you can live with a small drive... (or have a desktop) you'll love it.
Man, this is more expensive than the Corsair option.
If only I could afford to upgrade my hardware every time something new and cool comes out!
in
Aw jeez, how did this end up here..
Nobody has mentioned that this drive is quite a bit more expensive then their previous drives off of newegg. I'm guessing it won't be that big of a gain to command the extra $50-100. Instead I noticed that most of the Vertex line was depleted. I'm guessing Newegg is stocking up on these now. The downside is the prices aren't really going down. They are just making them faster/better and keeping the price just out of reach for most of us. I'd be willing to be pay $2 / 1GB for one of these. 120GB drive for $250 would be okay with me for the time being. Until then though I'm afraid most of us will be sitting here drooling over the speeds.
Why are so many of you people so damn cheap? Of course these drives come at a premium price! If you can't afford it then quit whining for a price drop and buy something cheaper/slower. You gotta pay to play..
Just want the earbuds, but will take the Zune too!
nice gadgedts...........at cheaperr rates and are of good quality
