Video: Life-sized Gundam's back, looking deadlier than ever

Man, remember that wicked awesome 59 foot tall Gundam they erected in Tokyo? Well, those pictures we saw a month ago were cool, but they're nothing compared to the splendor of the thing lit-up like a futuristic, killer Christmas tree. So hit the read link for some more kick-ass pics of the thing, but not before you peep the video after the break.

Cool. Wish they'd make one of Astroboy.
No Astroboy that I've heard but they are making Gigantor.

I forgot, here is another Gundam statue: Zeta Gundam

Not as impressive as the 1/1 scale RX-78-2.
sign of our future overloads
And your a sign that this future overLORDS joke is PLAYED THE F OUT.
Somewhere in the world Michael Bay just necessitated a change of pants.
Then he started planning how to fill 2 hours with explosions and no plot like most of his movies.
whatever, i like Bay movies. watching Transformers 2 in IMAX was incredible. yeah, i'm a sucker for sweet CG/giant robots, sue me.
Gah, hated the 1st transformers so never even bothered with the 2nd. Not enough robots/megan fox, too much shia lebouf
Now only someone needs to hit this thing with the All Spark.
4th
they should of made one of Exia
from first
No matter how you look at it, you posted 5th. Fail.
Or fifth if you counted the first four.
Eh, while 00 was one of the better Gundam series, it's not the U.C. stuff. RX-78 will be forever, although my personal favorite series is Zeta.
what does it say on her panties?
All you can eat
why doesn't it show up anymore?
i can read it clearly on my dell 22's ;)
Just one word.... Why???
I suppose the same could be said for the Statue of Liberty, or any statue for that matter. Same could be said about your existence too if you think about it.
Gundam is to Japan as Star Wars/ Star Trek is to the US. An this year marks it's 30th anniversary.
It is a major cultural phenomenon. The Gundam Franchise makes about $500,000,000 a year for Bandai.
why? 'Cause it's a giant effing robot!!! The real question should be: Why isn't it functional already!?!?!?!?
Asimo can run backwards, Qrio can conduct symphonies, robot Einstein sports realistic facial movements, and this damn (but still freakin' awesome) thing can't raise it's own arms!
yeah, seriously, this thing needs to be able to move.
For the same reason you post stupid comments on the internet.
Because you, and they, can.
uhh... two words.... North Korea?

It's not like this is the only giant statue. There's lots of giant statues all over the world. As much I like Green Giant brand canned corn, I think I'd rather have a giant Gundam statue
Scott:
I'd say Gundam is Star Wars and Evangelion is Star Trek. Or maybe the other way around. But probably not. Eva's the more cerebral series. Though it is also bloodier.
They are probably both about equally popular overall, but Evangelion is actually more popular again right now (due to the new movies being released).
I would actually make a special trip to Japan if they ever built a life-size Evangelion.
lol why would the Japs mistake their own iconic creation for Godzilla? but a showdown like that would be pretty tight.
I would be careful how you use the phrase "Japs" that is almost equivalent to using the N word.
@E
How?! Its an abbreviation, like "Brits", "Aussies" and "Scots". "Jap" isn't offensive at all, its not used in a derogatory fashion.
Anyway, back on-topic:- Thats awesome, crazy construction - where they're finished with it, I'll hapilly keep in my garden!
@ maty
Does World War II mean anything?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jap
How do you say Chinese in short form? Chin, Ching, Chink, Chins? or Asian?
probably sino, chinois, chino, ... azn is universally understood for peeps or descendants of east asia or SE asia. mongoloid is archaic and used to refer to people of mongolian or kublai khan descendants and typically inaccurate used by archaic anthropologist when describing asians
It's derogatory because people used to use it in that manner...just like the n word is derogatory for the same reasons even though it's a variant of a word that just means black. The fact that people used it in a derogatory manner gave it it's derogatory meaning so now Jap is derogatory.
Even oriental is derogatory and I still hear (usually older) people use it all the time...one time I found it in a printed set of lecture notes and I was seriously shocked since the notes were made recently. I know most people don't actually use it in a derogatory manner, much like most people who shorten Japanese to Jap nowadays don't realize or mean it in a derogatory manner but you gotta realize that it still stings people to read or hear it because they do remember or know about the derogatory meaning. Some people have really bad memories of how they were treated by people using these words so while you don't mean anything bad it's pretty bad form to use these words if you know it brings back really painful memories for other people.
Godzilla vs. Gundam > Ninja's vs. Pirates...
make that: Mecha Godzilla vs. Gundam! Fight!
That's because the ninjas always win.
Japan kicks-ass
VeggieTales > Gundam
Fo sho.
Veggie tales > robots in general
@gibblitz
Most fans of gundam never refer gundams as robots but as mobile suits because there are no a.i. The creator of mobile suits was inspired by Robert A Heinlein's novel Starship Soldiers aka Starship Troopers' powered armor and was based on it's concept and hence Mobile Suits.
I hope that thing finds a permanent installation somewhere, it really sucks that it's only up for two months. I believe the built it in such a way that it can be taken apart and put back together fairly easily.
World tour? :)
Tate Modern would be nice for us Londoners if it did... I'd take an hour out of my day to check it out.
@reba - that would be so awesome. I think they should put it in trafalgar square. can it be posed? they could have it with one foot on that fourth plinth...
Hey after the two months are up, I got plenty of space in my back yard and an available power plug. Doubt the neighbors would much like the lights or the site of a giant robot, but they didn't bitch about my mounting a OTA antenna on a 20' boom off my deck either.
Wait, they built that thing for only 2 months? That's crazy, it's so freaking awesome.
I would be careful how you use the phrase "Japs" that is almost equivalent to using the N word.
Recession antidote
i wonder if they'll try and build a macross quarter next
I was so there to see that thing in real life last week, but didn't stick around for it to light up. The Japanese definitely love their ANIME!
I want to take this home!
This thing should be as nimble as the NEXTs from Armored Core
Now, how am i going to steal it, sneak it through customs, and fit it in my living room? Maybe move the coffee table?
I'd love to see a giant optimus prime. This guy kinda looks like prime. Optimus prime FTMFW!!!!!
Considering that Optimus Prime was originally modeled after a Samurai in full battle armor much like most Gundam robots. Sure, why not?
It's not Prime....If you look at the colors it's Ultra magnus(who shares the same design as Prime just different colors)
so... soon to be an operational, walking, laser shooting, saber wielding, WWIII...
i wanna go to japan so bad
north korea builds nukes, japan builds a gundam
overkill much?
I saw this beauty in Tokyo the day before it was completely operation. Man... its really crazy now.
oh sh!t. When did the robots start taking over?
haha, win.
All it needs is a fuel cell powered by organic matter, and we're boned.
http://toystorejapan.com gundams !!
All part of Japan's elaborate plan to start manufacturing mass robots to build a robot army.. I heard there were plans to build a couple more of these "models".. and soon they will be able to create actual fully-functional Gundams that they will use to take over the world.
Just you wait and see..
Why does it look like G1 Ultra magnus
Why no Macross? I'd love to see a VF-1 Valkyrie (maybe made from real F-14 Tomcat parts) standing proud next to this mobile suit...
While they're at it, a Warhammer II Mecha (complete with railguns) would be pretty bada** too.
@_@ THE model kit of my DREAMS. I no longer want to build 1/100 scales. Please tell me once its taken down it can be put together in my backyard.
The head turns which is pretty sweet, but I think the coolest thing they could have done is made a functioning cockpit (open/close with sweet leather interior and console... robot Amuro inside? xD ), I would pay sweet money to sit in that thing. The detailing is so awesometastic.
Japan's not allowed to have anything but self defense force, so maybe they'll put all their budget into making Gundams which magically become fully functional over night... xD
I want one sooooooooo bad
soon one of these bastards will land near the Pentagon and mount an vicious assault.
And what do we get? A faux waterfall in Manhattan. God (if there is one), I love Japanese creativity.
Effin sick. Looks so sweet. Hmm wonder if this is there secret nuclear weapon LOL. nah just kidding. This ish looks hott. They should make a Voltron or BIG O
