HTC's redemption song: 3.5mm jacks coming to 'vast majority' of post-Hero devices
Better late than never, we suppose. Our friends at Mobile Crunch have it on word from a HTC spokesperson that a "vast majority of devices we launch after Hero" are gonna be including a 3.5mm headphone jack as a standard feature. The rep also added that devices already announced would "not necessarily be part of this change," which while not ruling it out entirely, doesn't get our hopes up. Still, it's refreshing to know the future generations won't be beholden to the adapter-laden shackles of its ancestors -- so Lancaster, where will you fall in all this mess?

This is actually one of the main reasons I switched from the Sprint Touch Pro to the Pre. I HATED having some stupid adapter hanging off the phone to use a regular set of headphones, or to connect to my car. It never worked properly, and was just such an oversight on the part of HTC. Too little, too late for HTC for me.
see, i just leave my adapter in my car attached to my aux. cord. either way, i'm plugging one thing in to my tilt. am i the only person in the world who this lack of a 3.5 doesn't bother. all i gotta say is, the lack of a 3.5 won't sway my decision of the tp2, firestone or star.
That, and the fact that WinMo sucks...
Wishing I could upgrade now to the Pre, but locked in due to work. ugh.
Gangbang!
I use a headphone adapter in conjunction with a HTCEXT splitter and a car charger so i charge my Touch Viva while playing music in the car, and then i have a Jabra bt8010 for everything else. Headphone jacks don't really affect me.
I was sick and tired of having to use 3.5mm headphones for portable audio. Now I rock Bluetooth Stereo with my Touch Pro, and could never, ever go back. I had to spend the past week using regular headphones while I waited on a new battery, and it was agonizing.
HTC, forget the 3.5 jacks, how about some actual video drivers for your devices? That's something highly useful for everybody. Thanks.
looks like a phone gang bang
that phone in the picture is about to get the bukake of its life
ROCK IT.

Don't worry -- I was thinking the same thing.
You are not alone.
Never thought I'd see the day of 3.5 on HTC, posting this with my iphone while listening to pandora backgrounded makes me hurt a little to know I switched sides.
I have a HTC touch hd and it sports a 3.5 mm jack.. fyi
wait you can listen to pandora in the background?? i thought that once you exit the program for another the music stops..
not if you jailbreak and get the right program (backgrounde?)
headphone bukkake?
that picture is wrong on SO many levels.
yeahhh !!!!!!ohh wait i cant even look at my diamond :s damm it now i want a headphone jack on my diamond damm it HTC
@Yankees368 Yea Me too i switched from the HTC diamond to the Pre becuase i hated that stupid little adapter of head phones and the ear piece and i always lose that little rectangle adapter for it anyways but this is good HTC is doing this now becuase there were too much wires atached to that adapter
Touch Pro 3 here I come!
seriously.. that shit is gross.
finally
seriously.. that shit is gross.
The comments i mean...
a veritable orgy of 3.5 input jacks. a big ol' circle jack. that photo is so pornographic. funny and scary.
Soo is the Lancster coming out on Aug. 3rd then?
I have an acronym for this sort of behavior. "BFT". 'Bout Fuckin' Time. I think all manufacturers should do this. Not having one steers me clear of any device, because I am rather particular about the style of headphones I like. Samsung is a major offender. I didn't know the Eternity had one until my kid pointed it out. I chose the Eternity over the Impression because of this very reason. I didn't care that it was $100 more. If it had the headphone jack, I would have bought the Impression since it has a better feature set. Jack trumps features, once again.
"Gonna" What kind of writing is that?
As for the article, props to HTC for finally doing something so practical, yet so out of the ordinary for every other mindless phone company.
FINALLY! Can't come soon enough.
skyblaze sees what you did there and ranks you up
Hopefully they add a 3.5mm jack to the Lancaster and give it a non-terrible AF camera. Add those two and a 800x480 AMOLED screen, maybe a slightly larger keyboard... and that would pretty much be perfection. The high res screens won't happen for Android phones until donut though...
Is it just me or does that pic look like a bukkake fest with the HTC as the star?
HTC thinks they know better than us. WRONG MOVE. NEVER question your paying customers who would abandon you over a cheap accessory! That's a general rule in business and marketing. It just took them over 3 years to figure it out and a ton of lost market shares.
Lancaster is a 3.5mm jack slut!
Seriously, what the fuck took them so long? It boggles my mind that one of the leaders in the mobile market couldn't grasp this notion until...now. Pure stupidity. That said, they are sure to benefit tremendously now that they've finally managed to remove their heads out of their asses. Too late for some of us
Something about that image is…. very suggestive...
HTC sucks because they are NOT Apple. I guess I am a fanboy. That's right, I said "fanboy" big whoop, wanna fight about it?
you geeks need to get laid
It's because of the iPhone isn't it? You know, when smartphones start shipping with 3.5mm headphone jacks...
N95 says no.
N95 says nope. :)
N95 says no.
THank you HTC! This is long overdue. Please don't be an idiot like apple and recess the jack.
Apple learned from their mistake. The 3.5mm jack on the iPhone 3G (last gen) and 3Gs (current gen) aren't recessed.
3.5" Jacks and USB 4 EVA!
That would be one HUGE jack.
I know I'm in the minority but it time for the 3.5mm jack to go.
Seriously, it's major nuisance to have to plug in more than one cable, often on different points on the device, which precludes charging and playing at the same time when mounted or in a carrying case.
How hard is it to buy a splitter/adapter for each of your audio connections, how many do you have? I have 2 headphone sets, my car audio. Buy the adpater, plug it there in forget about it.
And not to mention, by taking leaving out that jack, maybe the manufacturer could stuff in one more feature it would otherwise be forced to leave out.
How long are we going to have a legacy port on devices?
are you an idiot? everything is already 3.5mm. it's the universal standard for most consumer head/earphones, even my Sony MDR-V6s.
How is it a legacy port? 3.5mm audio jacks have not declined in popularity in electronic devices or been replaced by a new standard. They are the most mainstream audio output in existence. They are the opposite of a legacy port.
This may be related to the recent post about WinMo7 requiring a 3.5mm jack. (Though I don't know why it would be a requirement) Now if only HTC would add the 2.5mm jack to the already (pre Hero) Sprint Touch Pro 2... THAT would make me happy.
Took them long enough. I'll finally start considering them again for future cell phones.
Looks like my touch pro
@GBeatzRecrds no, you are the idiot. These are mobile devices, they need to be small and without any redundant plugs.
You sir are a fool. 3.5mm FTW.
We need exactly one USB cord for charging, file transfer and audio. Anything extra only complicates designs and comes at the expense of other useful hardware.
That jack doesn't require an adapter, but in return you have to plug two cords to your device when you want to play music for a while and need to have it also on the charger.
So what do we get for this supposed convenience? A separate jack is unnecessary hassle, and redundant when USB can carry audio.
Why on earth would anyone want headphones with a wire anyway? I can understand that on crappy devices that don't support stereo bluetooth (iShit), but who wants to be tethered to a device when they don't have to be? I agree, ONE USB port is the only port you need, for audio, power, whatever. Anything else is a waste of space and money.
Sivan,
How many sets of headphones do you see at BestBuy/Fry's/WalMart that end with a USB plug? let me give you a hint: 1 - 1 = ?
A single plug is a great idea, but when only HTC alone does it, it is a proprietary piece-o-crap. Since most manufactures are now starting to move from MinuUSB on to MicroUSB, I doubt that this will ever become a standard.
HTC's idea to not include a 3.5mm plug was a bad idea- and it has kept me from choosing an HTC device on more than one occasion (albeit I currently use a G1 now- which did not come with a USB-3.5mm plug so it did not get used for a MP3 player until the 1.5 firmware enabled A2DP)
Personally, I have preferred A2DP over any type of wired headphones for several years and it seems like the phone manufacturers are finally starting to catch on -even Apple!
Absolutely, because carrying around a stupid adapter is far more efficient than having a built in socket on your phone.
Tentacle gadget pr0n?
nice phone

Screw 3.5mm, I want an hdmi port....
Lancaster: 2.8" low resolution screen... forget it. I don't care if it has 3.5mm jacks.
Again, what do you get for not having to use an adapter? You have to use a second cord. You don't carry that second cord, it's always dangling from some stereo input of another device. So why can't that cord have an adapter on it so it's always ready to plug into the phone?
On my G1, the USB cord charged it while it was playing music through a splitter to my car auxiliary cord. As simple as can be. The splitter was mounted on the auxiliary cord, because I don't connect anything else to it. My G1 was my primary music source. So I didn't have to carry any adapter with me.
My two sets of headphones also were mostly used with my phone, hence each got a USB adapter. Other devices that would accept a 3.5 jack got their adapters. So I never carried adapters with me. My priority is the convenience of using my phone, all other devices are secondary, so adapters go on them for when I need to connect the phone to them.
Now that I have a Pre, I absolutely hate plugging in the USB cord from the side for charging, and then plugging in another 3.5 jack on top for audio. Imagine what it's like to hold a phone with two cords connected to it on two different sides. Even just putting it down flat is a mess of cords, each trying to twist it its way. And with two cords, mounts and carrying cases that let you charge and play music are impractical (leaving aside BT and Touchstone, we're talking about cords in this case).
You guys simply hate the idea of spending $5 for an adapter, even if it would make handling the phone much easier. Would you also demand that manufacturers stuff the power supply into devices so you don't have to carry it separately?
Okay, here's an idea, what HTC really should do, and they may have, I don't know, is make USB audio OPTIONAL. That is, if you prefer, you can connect a splitter to the USB jack and be able to charge and play music through it. If you're cheap and don't want to buy adapters, have your 3.5mm. Everyone happy?
This news makes me happy
