While our greasy, monkey-knuckled sisters over at
Autoblog are getting themselves into a twist over Jaguar's recent resurgence, our eyes remain firmly focused on the cockpit of Coventry's new 2010 XJ. At the center of the console is an 8-inch
dual-view touchscreen that allows you, the driver, to monitor the on-board navigation maps while your passenger simultaneously watches a TV or a DVD -- in silence, if they choose, with the aid of headphones. There's also a large driver-side virtual instrument cluster that, for better or worse, replaces the physical speedometer, rev counter, and fuel and temperature gauges. As a 12.3-inch "high-definition" display it dynamically morphs into warning messages, menus, and colors (red for fast!) that provide the driver with the most relevant information required at the time. The XJ also packs a Bowers & Wilkins 1200W audio system with 20 B&W speakers pumped through 15 channels of audio processing. The XJ is also the first automotive application of Dolby Pro Logic IIx tech with choice of DTS Neo:6 to enjoy 7.1 surround sound with your films. When you're in park of course. See the dashboard in action after the break.

Dual-view will NOT be offered on US bound XJ's due to safety rules here. Of course that doesn't mean someone with technical expertise won't be to override it.....
Why wouldn't dual view screens be offered when cars already have a regular navigation touch screen? Dual view keeps the driver from seeing what the passenger sees. There is no reason it shouldn't be offered.
I'll wait till the S-class comes out and see if dual view is on it.
Just another set of gimcvracks to break on the highly reliable UK auto.
I hope the germans dont come up with any so tacky. European luxury vehicals rely on refinement not styling better suited for the fast and the furious tokyo drift.
In heaven, the police are British, the engineers are German, and the cooks are Italian...
In Hell, the police are German, the engineers are Italian, and the cooks are British...
As I'm sure Autoblog readers are aware, 'Tug Boat' is the recognized authority on 'European luxury vehicals'. Especially ones with easily breakable gimcvracks.
What planet do you live on? Tacky?
Jaguar can't really be considered British anymore... They're owned by Tata (Indian makers of the $3000 Nano), and before that they were owned by Ford. That's why the're so unreliable and tacky.
No bluray?
Noice!
Yay, I can enjoy my films with full 15channel surround sound for that immersive 12" viewing experience.
I'd spend the money on a home cinema rather than a car cinema any day.
8" even worse.
12" if you can hack your speedometer into displaying the movie.
Recession Antidote?
I agree with RedSpdr.. Now that would be sweet
I agree, extra kudos for RedSpdr. I like the way you think
Also.. Didn't Autoblog already check this car out, its supposed to be incredible to drive.
Thats hot!
You can never have too much electronics in your car. Good old british.
Looks quite nice, but I could never see myself paying over $72,000 for it. Besides the fact that I couldn't afford it anyways. I'd rather have an Audi, personally.
Gorgeous interior. Wow.
Almost perfect. Where's the ejection seat?
That comes with the sport package.
Yes, but can it Blend?
Wow!
it's like a jag gone all toyota on us !!!
Wow!
That sound system is OD. Certainly easy on the eyes though.
I'll bet the virtual dash is cheaper than the old "analog" instrument cluster. They all get their data from the ECM and convert it to physical movements anyway, so why not have an OLED or good quality LCD display? It would simplify a lot of the dashboard design, and allow for skinning your display.
This is gadget news because it has a LCD and speakers in it? Anyway, never a fan of magnesium paddle shifting cars, usually are jerky and not very smooth on the gearbox, assuming that is what this car has, since I do not see a stick shift or a automatic shift transmission stick.
this type of car reads ur thoughts...
it knows u wanna reverse n it does it automatically...thats y u dont see any shifts
If you paid attention to the video, the XJ includes the same cool dial selector on the console that was introduced with the XF.
Its not a manual car.
Ill pass.
Yeah, prepare for the future, everything's Auto. Some car manufacturers and dealers are even referring to paddle shifters as manual transmission.
I don't thin I've seen a stick-shift Benzo since the late 90's/early 2000's. BMW are the only one's who get it.
i believe they first showcased dual view at the auto show in NY on the Range Rover. They will probably roll it out across the entire family (JLR) once fine tuned
WOW this car is overkill. Unless you're going to do epic amounts of road-noise dampening, all those speakers are wasted due to the 70dB+ of noise constant in a moving car. Not that I wouldn't effin love to have it.
Side note, you know you're reading a tech geek blog when it's called a "rev counter"!
It's tachometer, guys (I don't care what wikipedia says.) But I guess that's why Autoblog exists.
Nicest looking FOCUS I've seen yet. Great job Ford!
Too bad that Jag has been owned by Tata Motors since 2008, not Ford.
your comment was witty, funny, and just what engadget needs...
...it's really too bad that ford doesn't own jaguar anymore, or I might have even high ranked it....
BMW, LEXUS > Jaguar
Too bad Jaguar's are such buckets. Land Rover too. So much so, I'd actually call them hoopties.
this car is pretty boss.
I love the old XJ, but i am all for some change to stay competitive
It's not unusual for press shots to be of concept cars without a working engine/gearbox. Aston Martin do it sometimes with cars that don't actually have an engine or gearbox and therefore an empty space where the stick would be.
Too bad the 7.1 will never get used for anything but listening to Mozart at whisper level.
I wish I could trick out my bike with all these nice features. I mean of course not the car parts, but there could be a touchscreen display mounted to the handlebars, a good-sized cupholder, a nice trim, maybe a leather seat, and all the other features cars have had for so long. Does anyone know a person that can trick out bikes in the Texas area?
Maybe it's just me, but that dash doesn't do much for me. It seems to have a little bit o' Pontiac with those vents that doesn't stir my soul...
I love B&W speakers. Wish they made after-market drivers to install into cars.
I'm waiting till the first custom firmware is out then I'll get it :P
im happy with my xjr !
no thanks.
the current audi A8 still has a better looking interior. i also prefer the B&O speakers in the audi where the tweeters rise up from the dash. i hear the 2010 version of the A8 will be even more spectacular.
WANNNNTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!
