We're pretty much assuming this video of a purportedly "stolen" PS3 slim at a street market in the Philippines is fake, but given the
mounting pile of evidence and Sony's
other recent leaks, we feel compelled to share it with you. Nothing particularly amazing here -- it's a blurry video of a black plastic box with that new rounded-off logo style from
the PSPgo on it -- but if it's real it's certainly interesting. So, what say you -- KIRF, or the real deal?
Update: So this video was originally posted in the
PS3 News forums, along with the nicer high-res pic above, which pretty much matches the box art we've seen. Anyone changing their minds?
[Thanks, Khattab]

(Post-jack, but whatever. I went to that place many times.)
This seems to be in Greenhills in the Philippines.
The "black market" is on the older building. Usually third floor, but changes every now and then. You'll find fake electronics, pirated media that's packaged better than the real thing (kudos!), smuggled in consoles and handhelds (PSP was the rage those days), cellphones (even stolen ones!) and more stuff. In fact, that's where I first saw a PS3 phat.
I walked to the salesperson and asked how much was it. He replied PhP 45000 (a little below $1000) and I walked away. I'm not gonna be surprised if you find it there.
jon @ Jul 12th 2009 3:00PM
Guess we just have to wait and see if Engadget gets another poorly worded take down notice.
DeoWulf @ Jul 12th 2009 3:19PM
Just once, I want absolutely no-one to reply to a "first" comment. You know, just to see what happens. What about "don't feed the trolls", eh?
Samboini @ Jul 12th 2009 3:26PM
DeoWulf, the irony in your comment being that you replied to 'first!'.
Nikesh @ Jul 12th 2009 6:32PM
Actually, there isn't that much irony because there were many comments before his. If he was the first to reply to the comment it would be kind of ironic.
GroovDude @ Jul 12th 2009 7:32PM
Is it me, or are the people posting "FIRST" are like Engadget Freakazoids who possibly has an auto refresh set on his or her browser?
I like ice cream...
Jono @ Jul 12th 2009 10:29PM
Philippines Manufacturers a lot of Sony products (like the PSP Battery Charger!) So this could be real.
SimbaDogg @ Jul 13th 2009 4:04AM
oh gah'd...the obligatory "omg we got one" footage, always taken on the blurriest cell phone camera known to man. and on top of that, seems like someone w/ parkinsons disease just happened to be the one holding the 2001 nokia. dah wellz, more speculation for the fire.
Toneglaso @ Jul 12th 2009 2:30PM
probably fake video of something you guys have previously thought to have been real, which probably is real? Model looks exactly like the one in the leaked photos, same leaked photos which shared striking similarities to the PSP Go marketing materials.
oZone @ Jul 12th 2009 3:02PM
And the PS3 Slim pictures were leaked before the PSP Go pictures had leaked, mind you.
StreetStealth @ Jul 12th 2009 3:37PM
I couldn't find any information about Sony operating any manufacturing plants in the Philippines, but if the PS3 is manufactured nearby at all (Malaysia is likely), I could see the following scenario occuring:
1. Test run of assemlbly process line for PS3 Slim is run at a Sony contractor plant in Malaysia.
2. A test run of 40 is made, and QC analyzes the units.
3. A problem is discovered, the units are stripped for reusable parts and the remaining shells are sent for disposal.
4. Some wiseguy at the plant "disposes" of the incomplete PS3 Slims... by secretly taking a bin of them to his contact at the docks in Kuantan's seedy district.
5. For maybe 1,000 Malaysian Ringgit (~300 USD) this guy's contact takes the bin of incomplete PS3s and loads it on a boat destined for the Philippines.
6. The PS3s are sold to street vendors at a decent margin, which are then sold to extremely gullible tourists at a really big margin.
7. Non-gullible, Engadget-reading tourist sees one and shoots a vid.
8. Engadget readers instantly conclude it's Photoshop.
domob @ Jul 12th 2009 9:16PM
I highly doubt this PS3 is for real. There is a growing number of mock-up gadgets (cellphones, mp4s, iPods, PSPs, iPhones, game consoles, etc.) which uses the actual brand that it copies like Sony which is made here by piracy people in Philippines or from neighboring countries (Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, China, Singapore ... ). Some people would settle for a KIRF rather than the real expensive working one because its cheaper though they don't bother if its real or not and they knew it won't stay up to 6 mos. to a year.
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII (BarCODE) @ Jul 12th 2009 11:39PM
I'd bet it's got some kind of Atari or NES emulation chip and not real PS3 hardware inside.
anantha92 @ Jul 13th 2009 5:44AM
I highly doubt this is from malaysia, because from the best of my knowledge the PS3s are manufactured in china and japan only. As far as i know the plants in malaysia make DVD and blu ray players as well as some of the bravia Tvs. I highly doubt anyone from malaysia would sell it to people from the phillipines.
npa191 @ Jul 12th 2009 2:31PM
(now for a real comment)
I just don't see sony going that way in the design, I really like the current PS3's glossy finish, and dont complain about fingerprints I havent touched the actual system since i put it in my entertainment center.
KRIS_C_123 @ Jul 13th 2009 1:23AM
I think it might actually be real. it would be nice to see it that shape and size but i like the gloss too. and that PS3 is really.... i dont know like 1990's. i dont like it at all. The metallic PLAYSTATION 3 is far better looking in my opinion
Fir3lord @ Jul 12th 2009 2:32PM
idk... not shure if it is
btw why would sand people have it?
Amazingmike @ Jul 12th 2009 2:48PM
I think you're confusing Philippine people with Palestinians or Arabs or something. You should've paid better attention in school, you might've realized that these two locations are not even remotely related.
Alistair loveless @ Jul 12th 2009 2:59PM
he obviously went to school, but missed class.
On another note he's a racist piece of shit.
ant @ Jul 12th 2009 3:03PM
Filipinos are Asian Pacifics, so don't compare us to these terrorists. How's that for racist comment?

Sand people? Oh God, I always thought that the stuff I read in comic books were fake.
Ozzman_79 @ Jul 13th 2009 11:56AM
I hear they travel single file.........to hide their numbers
jezer2979 @ Jul 12th 2009 2:32PM
First @ losing??? Yes..
I dont think its real.. I just think that the bootleggers in Asia happen to get the spec of what the Slim PS3 is going to look like, and just quickly made a mock up and put it out. Like you can here the guy get BS's by the seller. "Its not out in other countries".. Lol Ok guy Im sold ;p
JayVe @ Jul 13th 2009 2:38PM
Honestly though, why does it matter? The new PS3 won't do anything different than the currently available models... except take a little less space. Mine is behind my flat-screen anyway and never takes up too much room. It isn't like these things are portable.
Size isn't the problem with the PS3.
Price,
game selection,
cross-game chatting,
custom soundtracks,
and other issues need fixing before size.
I'm really curious why the new slim PS3 is getting any press at all.
Alex McKee @ Jul 12th 2009 2:33PM
I'm calling shenanigans on this. It's the little things, like the fact that the chrome trim appears to be coming off. Seems weird that the bottom would still be glossy while the top appears to be matte.
johnny @ Jul 12th 2009 2:36PM
what is with the videos that come out that are blurry, bad lighting and they move the thing quickly in the video instead of setting it down to get a good shot. I mean my iphone takes 10x better videos than that, what are the using a cell from 95?
DanielT @ Jul 12th 2009 2:48PM
They have a PS3 from the future and a cell phone from the past, you know, like those movies with the shaky guy.
KevinC @ Jul 12th 2009 8:23PM
Congratulations. You fit 'IPhone' in another unrelated article. yaaaay!!
anus1220 @ Jul 12th 2009 10:45PM
yeah but your iphone only got video pretty damn recently. so that "cell phone from 95" is more technologically advanced in a manner of speaking.
Spooner @ Jul 12th 2009 2:37PM
WTF with the blurry cam? Come on people... its the 21st century...
br4nd0nh347 @ Jul 12th 2009 11:31PM
Have you checked your cellphone video lately?

As a 12 year old tech news and reviews blogger, I am very doubtful of this "PS3" Slim. But who knows? Possibly...Maybe....
ClarkyAC @ Jul 12th 2009 2:46PM
Your 12 years old?!?!
:D
DanielT @ Jul 12th 2009 2:51PM
When I was 12 I had a tech blog too, in my pants.

giuliop @ Jul 12th 2009 4:15PM

Jagger @ Jul 12th 2009 4:46PM
No, I think he's been reviewing old technology for 12 years. Learn to READ.
heh
