More alleged Chrome OS screenshots for your viewing pleasure
Well, here we go again -- another set of unverified, likely-fake Google Chrome OS screenshots has just landed in our inbox. Our tipster claims that while most apps are online, Picasa runs locally for photo and movie viewing, and the "System" tab displays the contents of SD cards and digital cameras. Do we believe it? Well, no -- all of this is just too easily mocked up -- but it's certainly interesting stuff, and there's something about that super-nasty blue scroll bar that we find oddly intriguing, even though it's mysteriously missing some pixels at the top. We'll leave it up to you to decide if this is real -- hit the gallery and let us know what you think.

it looks so linux-ey. :blech:
Except for the \ as a path separator. That's not Linux, that's a Windows thing and a real pain for anyone doing development in a C-style language.
I need a 'start' button
There are two places that the system bar is shown; one clear and the other pixelated. If it were, fake, I think the individual would have pushed the fact that the time, battery, etc was changing in order to look real. If you look closely at the poor quality shot of the system bar, you can see that is somewhere along the lines of 35% battery with 1hr 20 minutes remaining, and that was taken at 4 or 5 pm.
Unfortunately, I think this is real, and quite honestly, it looks like garbage. The web apps look more useful.
I thought the Chrome OS would have a windowing system...
Fake screenshot is fake
A fake, and a bad one:
1) A bar at the bottom of the screen? Chrome doesn't even show a status bar unless something is happening, and even then it does't take up the entire width of the window. Google wouldn't put an entire bar to only have a little bit of it used; they'd find somewhere else to integrate it into the UI. The tab bar would likely be used in place of a task bar, so it's not for that either.
2) No favicons?
3) Over-wide scroll bar? Chrome is all about being efficient with the UI, and that scroll bar is even bigger than the existing native implementations (Windows/Linux/OSX). Heck, Chromium on Linux does't even have the arrows at the end of scrollbars.
4) Menus? Chrome did away with them for a reason. This is probably the most unrealistic part of all this. Especially because they kept the existing icon-menus.
Well, +1 for absence of XFCE GUI elements on this one. Honestly, if it weren't for the non-Unix-style paths and the oddball scrollbar, I'd be inclined to think this were real.
Why bother posting these fake spy screens. Don't give these clowns the pre-teen attention that they're craving. Wait until some official screens are release, otherwise they will be sending these in every freaking week.
*Cough *cough *cough Adobe Ilustrator / PDF/ Photoshop Fullscreen *cough cough cough
it seems to me that if google is naming their OS after their web browser, then the web browser will probably be the main focus of the entire OS
The screenshots are not blurry!
Everyone and his dog know the real leaks always blurry.
Hey...I'm not sure if I'm right, but Google Chrome OS looks really close to the Cloud OS that the guys at www.thinkgos.com are developing. A cloud OS based on a Web Browser for NetBooks. Perhaps Google bought Cloud OS & are developing their own goodness on top of it. Just a hunch ;)
Totally fake: Why would a "tipster" publish photos of a laptop with it's "asset tag" and barcode clearly visible? Wouldn't that identify you and/or your laptop? Are you willing to do?
Weirder things have happened....I know there have been a few leaked Win 7 screen shots with the IP address showing. People are so hyped to get attention they stop using their brains.
Chrome OS = BoB OS
FAKE!
Does anyone else think this is a horrible idea? I can just install XP and get more functionality. But what if I want all the nifty apps that will run on Chrome?...well, I'll just install Chrome on XP.
We it depends. First off the usability of most subnotebooks (Still refuse to call them netbooks damn it. There is a name for them before the net because the intarwebs.) is limited already. Really what do you need beyond productivity suite\Mail\Calendar\Contacts\web video(Youtube/Hulu)\chat\ and of course web browsing. Your averge person is not playing quake on these things. And I read a report the other day where people are thinking that these devices are as good as normal laptops. They aren't. A good way of segregating these systems IS with a more stripped down OS. If someone wants to load Windows. Fine. Go right ahead. But as an example....there is NO way in hell my mom would ever use anything other then what was mentioned above. So there alone is about $25 going into MS's pocket for what? Because you are getting potential? A lot of people don't care about "potential". That's like buying a V8 Charger for driving to the grocery store a mile away once a week to pick up groceries. Overkill and not needed.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not one of these psycho Linux people who think Linux should be on everything. But in this case. Yah. These uber low end devices should be classed as a GOS\Linux device. Let the geeks of the world drop pirated, you know they are, versions of Windows on them if they really want it. IMHO of course.
OK there are a _HUGE_ number of holes in this observation but....
76% = 2:35 Minutes left is pretty damn crappy for a Mini 12"er. Granted we have no idea how old the battery is, we have no idea the batt capacity. And its an Alpha OS.
One of the key "selling"
C'mon Endgaget. You are better than knowingly posting fake pics. Google wouldn't let this leak... not without a humongous 'Beta' tag in the upper left corner.
In all seriousness, its not news if its 80% fake. Hype is not news and the two aren't interchangeable.
This is absolutely false. There are native implementations of Picasa for all major operating systems, including various distributions of Linux.
The idea of a machine dedicated to websurfing is hardly new or original.
I look back at the many previous attempts to create and enter that market space by various companies, including Microsoft.
As I recall, it failed each and every time because no one really wanted it.
Now, create a machine that will be pretty much the same cost as a netbook running a much more capable OS, and I'm betting people will spend an extra 20$ so they can do more than websurf.
Who wants to bet that once Google releases this product, it will some how make huge piles of money yet no one you know or hear of will have one?
reminds me of the old Apple At Ease simple finder.
These are obviously fake. Mine, however are 100% legit. Feel free to take a look:

I'm 50/50 on these.... the most convincing image is this one. The printed barcoded label, that's quite genius if it's fake.

it would be unbelievably stupid if its real.
The "G" on the development team sticker looks odd. Also, the laptop doesn't seem to have a touchpad.
i for one think it may be real, as you can see it says Google Chrome OS Alpha 1.01 on the top bar, so who knows it might be real.
and it is geared toward netbooks, so i assume the simple and easy to use interface is for them.
You never know, this OS is probably already developed in early stages, Google says they will release it in 2010, so they should be working on it right now. i actually think it might be real.
Now i think its real for sure, because on that Google Development Team Sticker, the G looks just like the font on Google.com.
and that is a Dell Inspiron Mini Netbook, just incase someone noticed. it has to be real. just watch in 2010, this is gonna be what we see on the Chrome OS.

buddy it says Alpha not beta, that means this is like 2 stages before Beta, they usually have Alpha 1 and 2 and then Beta.
So I think its real, and would not be surprised if this is what we see next year on netbooks. That Google sticker gives it away.
check Google.com and look at the "G", its the same Font as on this Netbook.
why wouldn't it be real they have released the alpha for linux and mac so all you have to do is have a linux or mac system to run it..heres the article
http://webworkerdaily.com/2009/06/05/google-chrome-alpha-available-for-mac-linux/
I think these are real. No one knows how the new OS is gonna work other than that its gonna be based on the Chrome browser as a paradigm. It could be very likely that new Chrome specific versions of Maps, Gmail and Picasa are being developed to mesh well with the new OS. Also even though Google just announced the OS a week ago they probably had early prototype level stuff around already as a feasibility model. We know from a few months back that there was an unknown OS that was visiting several webstats websites that had their browser and OS ID strings ripped out. see http://www.internetnews.com/dev-news/print.php/3788821 I think Chrome OS is probably already running around in alpha state out there.
ewww
I'm gonna keep using my Win7, if that looks like any hear to the final production, i'm gonna say NO Thanks.
ew
Change the interface please!
And use a other colour!
