iPhone OS 3.1 beta 2 released (update: disables tethering, enables AR?)
Unless you have a developer account with Apple, don't bother plugging your iPhone into iTunes -- we promise you're not going to have access to it -- but devs can now get their grubby paws on beta 2 of iPhone OS 3.1. We'll let you know if we see anything crazy, like usable Gmail, true background applications, or a notification UI that doesn't make you want to throw the phone against a very hard surface at high velocity.
Update: Looks like Apple has closed the door on hacks that enable tethering in this release -- at least for AT&T according to early reports.
Update 2: We've just been informed that beta 2 also introduces what appears to be a public API for manipulating live video. Devs are still testing the capabilities but it could open the door for augmented reality applications like Layar to come to the iPhone 3GS.

That's not normal. Something is wrong. Find a fix, call tech support if you don't know how to fix it.
Actually this beta is really fast, everything is fast now, even 3D games like Need for Speed, no lag at all.
In otherwords, it's nothing major. Just bug fixes from the previous beta.
There is a difference between backgrounding and multi-tasking and even an Iphone 3gs with insomnia is incapable of true multi-tasking. If you want a good idea of how multi-tasking should be on a mobile device check out webOS.
Opening an app. Quickly closing it and going back to the homescreen, finding the app, clicking on it to check whatever is not multi-tasking.
Before you say I hate Iphones I have one and I enjoy it but lets not kid ourselves: it is a brilliant feature phone but just an okay smartphone.
I don't think we are going to see true backgrounding or app manager for a long time... Apple has to figure out how to make the OS less taxing on the battery, CPU, and memory. THEN they may deign to let us do things OUR way on OUR phones.
Just get a Pre and be happy like me. : )
does the pre record video or have 32 gigs of built in space, or run games like real racing or have tomtom gps? pre is crap, sprints best phone but ugly like an egg and it has a shitty keyboard
Did the iPhone record video 2 weeks ago? Did the iPhone have 32GB two weeks ago? Does the iPhone even have a keyboard...some questions to think about.
My 3G has always recorded video with Cycorder.
When you create your device (pre) by reverse engineering the iPhone, of course you are going to improve upon it aka multi task- but when it came time for palm to create a novel concept of copy&paste they slaughtered it BECAUSE they didn't have Apple to mirror
Can they please improve the battery life by 30min?
Thank you.
no news in avrcp ff/rew bug? that's sad!
Based on what you're seeing when is 3.1 going to be released to the masses?
3.1 (not the one released today, the first beta) has been working WAY better on my 3GS. no its not the best phone in the world but its convenient, work, music and apps on one device. not bad, stop hating nobody has forced anybody to get one or not get one for that matter. its jsut a f#$@ing phone.
Sorry it's not just a phone, it's a lifestyle. I use it more than a computer. it's my best friend.
@Henry, that is just sad.
This is one reason I hate the iphone so much, it reminds me that people like henry exist. It's like football, and church, and the kkk only about a company. (Not to mention all of the iphone's intentional deficiencies)
Best.
Sounds like someone needs Jesus!
Sent from my iPhone
hahahahaha made me laugh.
The iPhone is still the best smartphone I've ever owned. I'll take it over the WinMo and BB phones I've had any second, any day.
So, what's not working about Gmail in 3.0? Works great for me over IMAP and HTTP, just like it did in 2.x.
@ jhonny Majority of the americans also thought Bush was the new god.
They also thought they landed on the moon. What morons. :)
Are you crazy? wow... I was in the vast majority who hated him.
It was either him or some guy who looked like a zombie pedophile.
Hmmm, idiot or zombie pedophile. Guess which one we chose.
I'm still waiting for custom Text/MMS/MAIL ringtones, and the ability to have the alarm be a playlist, not a ringtone. But...that's because my $300 iPhone is also an iPod...interesting eh?
David,
I agree with your post. No custom ring tones sucks! my old BB and my Moto phonesd both allow ringtones from MP3's why is this feature not on the iPhone? Does anyone know of an app that will allow me to use my MP3s already on the iPhone for ringtones? Notice I said MP3s not the AAC junk from the iTumes store. (FYI my phone is also jail broken).
Use audiko.net. There you can download existing ringtones for iPhone or upload and cut your own mp3 to be converted into an iphone-ringtone.
All for free!
Myxer.com. Easy as hell to convert your mp3's to ringtones. Its free also.
you can always convert the MP3's to ACC in iTunes and then change the extension from m3a to m4r, unless that's what you're talking about when you talk about ACC, that's what I do...it's not like they're going to sound good on the external speaker anyway. they just have to be under 30 seconds
its pretty simple, here do this
1. find song in itunes
2. find part where you want the ringtone to start
3. open get info, options tab, adjust the start/stop times to preference. use the miliseconds for precision. the ringtone will not work if it lasts more than 40 sec, change the stop time for that
4. right click convert to aac
5. find the new aac file (will be .m4a) change to .m4r, add to itunes. will come under ringtones in the left pane (may have to enable the ringtones section under options)
6. sync iphone with ringtone syncing enabled.
if oyu want custom for sms/email or whatever you need to jailbreak and open it up find the file and replace it with what you want
Dammit, just let me use Tethering already!
I just want my phone to work in my office again, like it was before 3.0
Does anybody know if this build fixes the bug with client certificates introduced by 3.0?
For anyone that does not know the bug: If you install a client cert on your phone (via email or config utility), the contents of the certificate on the phone are blank! If you try to use the certificate to access a web site (e.g., your Exchange OWA site) then it fails (due to the cert having no content).
This one really p's me off, as one of the reasons that I got the phone was to be able to access one of my secure work websites while on the move. It worked fine on 2.2 on a friends 3G, but not on my shiny new 3G S!
No posts from Paul.a.Chapel yet? Is it too much to hope he has been banned finally? Dare I dream the impossible dream?
My brand new 32gb 3g s was giving me problems anytime i would plug in my charger, the screen would flash and go crazy. I did not want to wait for a new phone from apple so i found the website i linked to my name above and got Apple developers account access and installed 3.1 beta and this fixed my problem. hope that helps someone else.

Advertising websites never made anyone happy here on Engadget...
Or on Twitter, those lame idiots are so annoying.
hmm i was at the apple store the other day...
and I said i think im going to by an power mac pro... but then and thought about it and I said to myself. "Self, why would I by this when I already have leopard running on my hackintosh at home...
you mean a macbook, not an... lol jk
i hate macs, i have no use for them, id rather build a dream ms machine for 1000$, sell it for 2700 if nescessary (too bad you cant build macs) than spend 5,328.00$ on a mac pro with exact same specs. no joke i actually just customized a mac pro right now
macs are good for some people, but i personally think photoshop runs better on windows 7
I am a long-time sprint customer where connections are better than that with ATT&T. Any ideas when the IPhone will be released by Apple so that it can be used on other networks? Will Apple every open it up? Thanks.
Good point

Its not really simple when you compare it to almost every other phone on the market where you select the mp3 and choose "use as ringtone"!!
It's a crime that the iPhone makes you convert and modify your existing tracks for ringtones. Its done purely because they know a large majority can't be bothered to create their own with this backwards method, that they will go online and purchse them off the iTunes store. Its also worse when people defend every problem with the phone with some excuse of "why you dont really need it" or "you can download a hack" etc etc.
Its these same fan-boys that slag off EVERY other phone on the market e.g. "does the pre record video or have 32 gigs of built in space, or run games like real racing or have tomtom gps? pre is crap, sprints best phone but ugly like an egg and it has a shitty keyboard". Fair enough the iPhone is a decent phone but its not the best at everything, a lot of these other phones have a lot of good features and they are by no means crap. Before anyone unleashes a barrage of abuse I do actually own an iPhone and I like it a lot. But I have to say it took me a while to get one because I knew I would then be included with these "Apple Fan-Boys".
