Apple considering matte option on more Macs?
AppleInsider is reporting that Apple might be moving toward providing anti-glare options on more of its Macs, a move that would undoubtedly bring joy to anyone opposed to unbearable glare when using their machine in anything more illuminated than an underground cavern. The company moved to glossy displays on its iMac offerings, and then added them to both its 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pros back in October at its Spotlight turns to Notebooks event, leaving only the 17-inch MacBook Pro with an anti-glare option. AppleInsider quotes people "familiar" with the company, who say that Apple is considering the option in response to its core business customers, and that the most likely candidates for the anti-glare treatment would be the 13- and 15-inch laptops. Do it, Apple -- do it for love, do it for ocular relief.

I can't stand the current trend of glossy screens. In the showroom they look awesome, but to live with I want to see what's being displayed on my screen, not my own face.
never fear brown shoe, somebody out there must want to see you frace, they may be blind but that's beside the point. "core buisness customers" as opposed to the trendy starbucks iGeneration that they market specifically to? I stare at autocad for 8 hours a day and my glossy monitor is a pain in my eyes, (company's too cheap to try and fix the error of their ways..)
see, its affecting my eyes so much I couldnt even tell that your name was zappa, not zappata...and that i spelled face incorrectly as well as making several other spelling and gramatical errors. I may have a chance to redeem myself if I were to gain access to a non-glossy screen.
honestly add the anti glare option and MAYBE i would buy a mac ... even though the anti glare screen is going to cost more (sigh)
ive been using an asus notebook off and on recently and when i am indoors i have to tilt the screen at funny angles just to see ... and taking it outdoors is pretty much useless even with the battery draining while the screen is on full.
glossy screens are weak
Sweet, now more Macbooks can have screens as dull as their owners.
Mac screens are now made out of glass.
Old matte screen were made out of plastic. I can touch my desktop LCD and see it wiggle below my finger.
How can Apple make a matte screen out of glass?
@Michael Scrip
Why is glass better than plastic? Because it doesn't wobble when you touch it? You shouldn't be touching your screen anyways, and I'm sure the glass is a lot more fingerprint prone than plastic.
One of the things I have always loved about MacBook Pros is how that aluminium body and solid construction make them durable and semi-rugged. All that goes away if when you drop it your screen shatters. For reasons already said the matte plastic is better for usability, but it also doesn't shatter, or get as many fingerprints on it.
Like I said before, it may look fantastic in the store, but it's not the best for something you're going to use every day.
Could they make the screens out of the same stuff that's used to make Zagg Invisibleshield screen covers? :D
"How can Apple make a matte screen out of glass?"
Ever used an SLR? The image in the viewfinder is falling on a piece of matte glass. It's called ground glass. You can make it with etchant, lasers, sandblasting...
@Information Central: But that's being projected onto the surface from a lens, not just displayed in a big sheet behind it. You could do that on a rear projection screen, but I think LCDs are a different deal. There are antiglare treatments for glass that keep it from looking so much like a mirror.
Glossy screens are great if you use them in a pitch black clean room. Introduce light or any sort of smudging or dust and they suck.
There's no difference between projecting a focused image on the glass and simply laying the glass directly on an image (which is already focused because there's essentially no distance between them).
But whatever they do, they need to do something. Glossy screens suck even in a pitch-black room, because any light from the screen will illuminate YOU and create a reflection in the screen (unless you're wearing all black, including a hood with eyeholes).
Please! Apple, set the trend by stopping this glossier-is-better nonsense!
It's actually a chore to find monitors and notebooks that don't have glossy screen.
my Asus monitor has no glass :D only the plastic around the edges
meant gloss
It's not hard, all you need to look is for laptop in the business section. Like HP small business, Lenovo, Dell small business. Even thus you are not a business, you can still order from there, as they consider you as "starting business". So no worries.
And the cool thing is that, you get premium tech support service, and no junk on the system, and usually higher quality than the home version of the laptop (that is why you pay more).
A quick example of a model outside of Lenovo, with LED backlit screen that is preatty good for a laptop with anti-glare, matte screen film, with similar power and features of some Apple Mac Book Pro (including ambient light sensor and back-lit keyboard, metal base and screen lid (sadly not the palm rest)), would be the Dell Latitude E series. This is just a example, I am sure they are others.
Well in a small apartment, a glossy monitor can double as your mirror.

This is the ONLY reason I haven't bought a new 15" MBP. I thought for sure at the big notebook event they would have introduced anti-glare options for the whole line.
And what is it with them calling it "Anti-Glare"... they do realize that by default the standard option from Apple would be "Glare", right?
yeah hope they get a clue on that one. Glossy screen on a laptop is a deal breaker for me. On a desktop you control your environment, but a laptop cmon. Give the option back
Matte is great, used gloss on my bro's MBP, not too bad.
Don't get rid of the shininess!.. This will make my magpie children cry :'(
Yes! Please do so apple.
Huzzah! Now if they just lower their prices a bit all reasons I have against them will be gone(still probably wont get one 'cause I have enough computers right now but if I needed a new one I'd actually start considering it)!
^them being Macs
hahaha that HUZZAH goes well with ur pic
now where are my ninja stars *Q(O_o *Q)pew pew
Yeah, I don't imagine Apple is going to drop a low end display with a Celeron processor in a cheap plastic case and slap a $499 price tag on it any time soon.
Go buy a Dell and turn it into a Hachintosh. It's the same thing just with a different logo.
How bout having the exact same specs that they currently have in the 15" Macbook Pro but dropping the price to ~$1170 instead of $1700 since (this was just the first non-apple, halfway decent laptop manufacturer I thought of) Toshiba's Satellite A500-ST6621 can be customized to the exact same specs for that price?
@ Mark:
"can be customized to the exact same specs for that price"
The Toshiba has an aluminum unibody? Glass screen? Single large glass buttonless trackpad with multitouch? OS X?
The Toshiba looks like a cheap (and thick) turd next to a MacBook Pro. Which is fine - some people are happy with cheap (and thick) turds for their computing needs. But to expect the the MacBook Pro to be comparable in price to the Toshiba is...silly.
Wow, so many people quick to attack anyone who dares to say that apple's prices are too high...
"The Toshiba has an aluminum unibody? Glass screen? Single large glass buttonless trackpad with multitouch? OS X?"
No, but I'm fairly sure that some aluminum and glass doesn't come to a cost of over $500. As for OSX, that was pretty much my whole point; with this improvement to the screen the only thing holding them back from having my very high esteem is the price. OSX is obviously the only reason people buy Apple computers so they price gouge which is the only thing I don't like about them(well... aside from some miscellaneous issues with signed zip files and inconsitencies with copying files). Thus my saying that if they lower their prices and I need a new laptop I'd actually strongly consider one.
@Paul: Wow, you guys are reading too much into this. I post a comment saying that I'm happy they're ditching the glossy screens and that now the only thing holding them back is the high price and from that I'm branded an "Apple Hater"? Note that I didn't say that I would buy the Toshiba laptop or any other of the thousands of brands out there. It was just an example of a significantly lower priced computer with the exact same specs, thus proving that it is possible for Apple to lower their prices without resorting to using the crappiest components known to man.
i'm sorry, i know this is off topic but i cant hold back anymore.
@Paul who said "blah blah blah no one cares what i have to say blah blah"
i hate you, i really, really, really...... REALLY hate you. i cant even describe in words why. i'm sure there is more than a few people out there who agree with me as well. I'm not going to start an argument with you, so bash me all you want and call me an apple hater, or whatever your insult of choice may be, i dont care.
I... Hate.... You..... that is all.
LOL
@paul, i seriously lol'd at that reply. not only that but i plus rated it. simply because you didn't respond with a long winded, stupidity infested, inanely mind numbing, and irrelevant, and overly defensive rant, as per your usual.
....i still hate you with every fabric of my being tho, don't be fooled.
You sacrifice quality for price and that's my point in case you didn't get it. Apple isn't going to put it in a plastic case and put a crap screen in there.
I hate to sounds like a broken record, but those glass screens suck donkey. I won't be buying another laptop from Apple until there is a matte option. In fact, I'm just about to place an order for the Thinkpad T400s. I can't wait any longer...
i gotta say, i'm with paul on this one. vote me down!
What do you hate about them?
FUCK YEAH
You forgot one word at the beginning of your post. "AMERICA"
LOL, finally they realize that being able to use your display as a mirror is a BAD thing...
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't "anti-glare" completely different from matte? While slightly better than glossy, I have never found anti-glare to be nearly as effective as a true matte display.
Actually, anti-glare and matte are the same thing. Glossy and high-gloss are what you're thinking of.
Actually I was thinking of the anti-glare coating many plasma screen manufacturers use, but it's good to know "anti-glare" in Apple's world means matte, haha.
Maybe all the other notebook manufacturers will follow suit! I went into Best Buy the other day to browse the current market selection, and I sh!t you not, EVERY notebook on display had a glossy screen. I'm in the market for a notebook and this is quite discouraging.
FINALLY. I was planning on buying an Apple portable right before the glossy screens came out. I have been waiting since then, since I wanted to get a 15", and it took about 10 seconds of using one to realize how terrible the screen is.
Did you adjust the brightness?
Brightness nothing, on full, it's still horrible to use.
Will it sync with my Palm Pre?
iTunes won't, but USB mode would work.
It will connect with your Palm Pre, and you should be happy since you get a Palm Pre out of the deal since you didn't have one before.
