Mercedes confirms plans for all-electric SLS AMG gullwing
This one hasn't exactly been the best kept secret in automotive circles as of late, but Mercedes has now finally come out and confirmed that it will indeed be producing an all-electric version of its new SLS AMG gullwing coupe. For those not immediately sold by the word "gullwing," you may be slightly more impressed by the 48 kWh liquid cooled lithium ion battery pack at the heart of the car, which gets paired with an electric drive system tied to all four wheels that Mercedes says is "on the same high level" as the 6.8-liter V8 engine that's in the non-electric SLS. Somewhat curiously, however, Mercedes isn't doing any talking about range just yet but, as AutoBlog notes, it seems likely that it'll be less than the 200 miles the Tesla Roadster gets, given its small battery capacity. There's also unfortunately still no official word on a price or time frame for a release, but the current talk seems to be that it could be rolling out by 2015.

sounds like it's BACK TO THE FUTURE!!!
Oh Shut up! You obvious twerp. What next?
Huh Huh!, where's the flux capcitor! Huh Huh, I bet it does 88 miles per hour, Huh Huh, where does the plutonium go Huh Huh!
Are you telling me you built a time machine...into a DeLorean?
ANG in the title should be AMG
typo in the title, should be AMG not ANG
I'll take twelve. Just tell me where to send the post dated check and where I can pick them up.
Now let's start rolling this tech down to units below the $100k range.
you guys, there's a type in the title. it should be amg, not ang.
There's a typo in your comment lol
+1 lol !
Not to mention your the third to point out that obvious mistake.
lol, who can point out my obvious typo
ddub: It's not a typo, but rather a grammatical mistake. "Your" should be "You're."
Mercedes designs cars for girls. Intelligent enthusiasts drive BMW and it connects with my iPhone beautifully. I just picked up my new 335i yesterday and I love it.
If only BMW drivers weren't totally assholes then all would be good.
And everyone who thinks twice about the car they're buying buys an Audi. Use your iPhone with that and try saying something positive about your BMW.
Almost every BMW driver I see on the road drives like an arrogant dick. Nice to see they speak the part too.
I am a new BMW driver (2 weeks as of 1 hour ago), and I must say, a LOT of them are dicks when it comes to driving. I'm doing my best to change this sentiment, though. I use my turn signals, don't speed excessively, and always let people into lines in front of me.
Not all of us are douchewads.
don'tcha hate when people generalize all mac users as fanbois and PC users as haters? Well ,this is like that. I drive a 5 series, and I can say that I don't think that I'm a dick while driving. Please don't generalize me! AHHHH!!
BMWs have the ability to make drivers seem better than they are. That's probably why most of them are jackasses. But, it doesn't change the fact that BMW is better than both Mercedes and Audi in the overall driving experience.
After all, how much more luxury do you really need once your in that price range? BTW, I drive a very old BMW and I love everything about it and for the haters, I owned all 3 brands for at least 1 year (525i, A6, E320).
I'm not bringing down BMW's, they're fantastic cars, but most of the drivers I've seen on the road are assholes. There are exceptions, of course.
Why does it not surprise me that BMW drivers also have iPhones.
You know how BMW drivers are different from porcupines? The porcupine has its pricks on the outside.
Aside from the 'AMG', it is also a 6.3L V8, not a "6.8l V8".

ANG Gullwing? No thanks. I want a SLS AIG Gullwing.
in a heart beat!
ANG? lol
I'm a sucker for electric drivetrains and gullwing doors.
Nobody else finds it weird that Mercedes is still steamrolling an electric two-door sports car even after buying the majority of Tesla?
It was announced this week that Mercedes had sold their stake in Tesla to the Arabs.
Mercedes aren't designed for women in mind. Gullwings don't provide much
modesty for chicas in short skirts when they exit a vehicle.
Gullwings are developed for Paparazi hunting beaver.

ventriloquist?!
Too bad its going to priced out of reach for most people, sell poorly and become a niche item that will fade into obscurity and not advance the proliferation of electric cars at all.
Too bad the SLS is fugly as hell. This is why the actual car was not pictured.
Yet it still looks way better than a BMW.
Go put your money where your mouth is and start a street race.. then we'll talk.
Haha, street race? Sounds like the words of an idiot with no talent, no driver's license, or both.
Here's a pic for you to put up on your bedroom wall until you someday have a car of your own.

The concept looks like a dodge ram with wings, I guess that is what the Emirates like these days.
I think it looks just like the chassis of the slot cars we raced when I was seven years old. Little did I know the advanced motor drive technology would find its place fifty years later.
I'm sorry, everyone is moaning about what make of car is the best and to put your mind at rest, Mercs, BMWs and Audis fail in comparison to an Aston Martin DB9 or even the new Vanquish, although probably not the Vanquish, higher price for a smaller DB9, lighter, faster yes, but less practical . Admittedly out of most people's price range, but well worth the money.
What makes a car the best comes down to the driver and what they're using it for. Someone going offroading is going to find the beautiful DB9 absolutely useless.
Other people think that the prius is the perfect car because it gets good gas mileage and is reliable/affordable.
It all comes down to preference, really.
Exactly. I've never felt the need for a tokenistic and pathetically small attempt to appear to be saving the planet whilst retaining similar MPG's and increasing carbon emissions during manufacturing and shipping of components such as batteries, so I haven't bought a pirus.
Awesome, now we got the whole collection of people from Jalopnik arguing about car none-sense. Where's the Gizmodo people when you need them; they would really balance out the car none-sense with tech none-sense.
I am seriously starting to have doubts about visiting engadget in the future. I am sick and tired of the misspellings! I don't understand why some people over there don't take their jobs seriously. Its like some of them just play around on the web until they find something they thinks is news. Then they type it up in under two minutes, and don't know how to use a spell checker. It's like getting up, going to work, sitting there, and just because you were there you call it a full day of work. Start taking this a little more seriously guys! Did we graduate high school, or what? Thanks!
Gullwing doors are stupid.
The new motor design is pretty fascinating- but how much are over-expensive luxury cars really helping our economy, dependence on oil, health, national security, or environment? I’m more interested in car companies producing mid-priced 100% electric cars that normal people can afford. Electric cars are safe, clean, and efficient, but they can only make an impact if they are available to all. There WERE affordable electric cars over a decade ago (the RAV4-EV, and the GM EV 1) but they threatened the profits of oil companies, so chevron sued and had the cars crushed. To learn more about that and the history of the electric car, and the advantages of electric cars, check out http://www.twocentspermile.com and http://bit.ly/2centspermile
2015? This will be just in time for the energy crises caused by not enough electrons flowing through the grid.
Some math on the battery life:
the electric motors produce ~400kW peak power, which means they'd go through your 48kWhr battery in about 7 minutes. In practice they're probably not at peak power very often, but will still probably only last 15min at full throttle.
batteries have a long way to go yet :(
