Sony Ericsson posts $299 million Q2 2009 loss, PlayStation-integrated phone (probably Aino) coming Q4
The good news, if you want to call it that, is that Sony Ericsson's most recent quarter loss is not as bad as its epic $382 million tab prior, and at this point there's no talk of further en masse job cuts. That said, this new report isn't exactly sunshine, and the Q2 results show a 213 million Euro ($299 million) net loss. Product shipments were around 13.8 million, down 43 percent compared with last year. Some blame is attributed to the focus on mid-tier feature phones in lieu of a greater smartphone push -- SE says it's working to correct that direction, but its higher end devices won't hit until fourth quarter. One interesting note is that one of those late-year handhelds is said to "integrate with PlayStation," but before you get excited over the oft-rumored PSP phone, we'd venture to say it's more likely that description's referencing the Remote Play-supporting Aino. From what we can tell, there's no indication of what's in the cards to improve Q3, so we won''t exactly be surprised if the story repeats itself three months from now.

Why isn't that phone splattered in blood if SE is doing this bad? Two huge losses in the first two quarters and not a single mocking comment about the company and their devices. Not even a little bit? I'm disappointed Engadget.
Sheesh...
MIA @ Jul 16th 2009 2:15PM
wow, sony ericson sucks SOO bad. I have lost almost all faith in them.
htd @ Jul 16th 2009 1:20PM
keep avoiding delivery of what people actually want, like touch screen, 2nd analog stick on psp2, no price cut on ps3, it will only be worse, IMHO.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jul 16th 2009 1:32PM
ummm what does a second analog stick, and price drop on PS3 have to do with Sony-ERICSSON???
Alex @ Jul 16th 2009 3:33PM
I don't think he knows that they're two different divisions.
JZ @ Jul 17th 2009 4:09AM
First of all learn what brands Sony incorporates before you write something second of all sure.. touchscreens are neat and are belong to the smartphones. The smartphones have only a mere 10% market share which is dominated by BB who last time i checked has except for 1 mobile nothing else with a touchscreen. So the actual interest in touchscreens might be there but its rather marginal. Now if you are a big producer like Nokia you don´t give a crap about those few which clearly shows as they have close to 0 touchscreen mobiles and still control 65% of the market. So just like any other mobile producer SonyEricsson is more interested in getting the rest of the market in which they have ussually around 100 different mobiles. So the lack of options isn´t the problem which makes this loss rather hard to address.
Will @ Jul 16th 2009 1:23PM
Oh, Sony. You have yet to impress me. All of Sony's devices are Windows machines with Apple prices. How much is this phone going to cost? $700?!?!
Aaron @ Jul 16th 2009 1:24PM
Nokia selling 1,140,000 phones a day, maintaining its lead in the smartphone market and generating $300mil profit = blood-splattered phone and a massively negative post.
Sony Ericsson losing $300mil again = a shiny new phone and a neutral/positive post.
What gives, Engadget?
papari @ Jul 16th 2009 1:27PM
And this post is full of facts, unlike the turd Thomas posted earlier. This site is becoming way too inconsistent to be taken seriously. Get your act together Engadget, PLEASE.
where u at? @ Jul 16th 2009 1:32PM
The nokia article was written by Thomas who, as we all know isn't a nokia fanboy. This article was written by Ross who asfaik isn't very biased. Different writers, different points of view.
redleader158 @ Jul 16th 2009 2:03PM
well, nokia expanded way too much in the late '90s
Aaron @ Jul 16th 2009 2:06PM
@where u at?
Yes, this is why newspapers and reputable blogs have editors - to keep the message consistent and present opinions as, you know, opinions.
dsteve303 @ Jul 16th 2009 2:09PM
Sony gives the engadget free gadgets. Nokia gives them keychains.
papari @ Jul 16th 2009 2:10PM
@ where u at?
That's partially true.
A point of view is one thing, but concealing the facts and writing in a distasteful manner that is almost awkward to read is another.
I'm not saying I'm perfect. On a few occasions I've posted some serious and utter crap, just for the shits and giggles. Those posts have been way out of the line, but that's not such a big deal, because I'm just a reader, and I rarely even do it. From now on, never.
I think it's completely justified to ask for the facts, and those should be stated in a clear manner. Of course the writer can add whatever he thinks is right, but he should NEVER conceal the facts, or even worse, leave them out completely. If Engagdet starts going in that direction, then this place will soon be a playground for immature college kids, who think that their cheeky remarks are all we want to read.
On the other hand, that kind of behavior will also destroy any chance for a serious and insightful discussion here in the comments section.
Calpa @ Jul 16th 2009 2:34PM
Christ;
Like it? Read it.. don't like it? stop reading it and find another blog tech-news site.. but don't stay around and moan about it.
papari @ Jul 16th 2009 3:10PM
@ Calpa,
Geez... First of all I'm not moaning, and second of all I think that would be the worst solution.
If you just quit and run every time you bump into something incorrect, even on the Internet, you end being a loser who will never get anything done. Maybe that's what you'd do, but I won't.
I've been reading this site from the near beginning, and correct me if I'm wrong, but the consistency has been going down. Sure, this blog has a lot more to offer than back then, but if important news gets dealt like shit, it's really worrying.
There's nothing wrong in respectful criticism. After all, it's the readers who really make this site.

PSN on SE phones this year?? promising. ESPECIALLY if its going to use the same AppStore the PSP will have...
rells009 @ Jul 16th 2009 1:44PM
Hopefully it's priced competitively, unlike some other devices that need not be named.
synn @ Jul 16th 2009 9:29PM
SE's playnow Arena is expanding into app distribution, in addition to games, wallpapers, ringtones etc. It's currently active in a few european markets, soon to be worldwide.
zephxiii @ Jul 16th 2009 1:55PM
Hopefully they turn things around, they are very capable. Their dumbphones are just great....they just need to use 3.5mm and ditch memorystick.
Daniel @ Jul 16th 2009 2:01PM
Why is Engadget acting like the Aino is the only phone associated with PSP-phone rumors? A SE exec flat out said you would be able to play Playstation (he did not specify which) games on the Satio and not a single word from Engadget.

Aino is a DP, but without the guy in front.
Tommi @ Jul 16th 2009 6:42PM
"Aino" Is a northern european (female)name.
Ioden @ Jul 16th 2009 2:37PM
I just got a TM506 two days ago and it kicks the eternal ass of the Samsung t229 I had before it. All I can say is, if this thing is SE's idea of a dumbphone, one of their SMARTphones would give me a perma-boner.
Rick @ Jul 16th 2009 4:21PM
A $382 million loss followed by a $299 million loss is 'not as bad'?
Wesley @ Jul 16th 2009 4:57PM
Sony Ericsson is good. I've had 4 phones from them and they are much better than Nokia cheaply made rubbish and I have owned one and compared my SE phones to Nokia smartphones and SE is better by far, my friends with Nokia agreed too.
I'm looking forward to the new Rachel Android phone (though could do with at least a led flash, it does make a difference) and the Satio and Aino should be good too. C905 is really good too a great featurephone.
Better rush with these new releases if they wanna save themselves.
Now what would be good is a super smartphone +qwerty keyboard with a an Nvidia Tegra inside , cause that's what I want
spinler @ Jul 16th 2009 5:02PM
i've loved all the SE phones i've had. the interface is great. and i've been able to cut and paste and multi-task on my phones for a long time. not sure why that's been so hard for apple. the phones (except for the w580) have been super durable and the w810 still takes some of the best photos of any camera phone out there. a big problem is their lack of a 3.5 jack (hate that dongle) and inconsistency from phone to phone. why does the 810 have autofocus and flash but so very few of their newer phones do? the dongle and camera have been gripes of SE consumers for a long time. it's just another example of sony doing what they think is best and not paying any attention to what their consumers want.
jimmyink @ Jul 17th 2009 5:18AM
Second that, the worst thing about SE phones, without doubt is the MASSIVE and clumsy propriety USB/Power connector. I would like to use my phone as a DAP sometimes but who wants to carry around the extra lump of plastic needed to use the headphones?
They better come out with something nice (and android) fast otherwise it's iPhone for me.
GlobalDia @ Aug 10th 2009 1:59PM
sony NEEDS carrier support for their phones or else no one will buy them when they can get an iphone, pre, or bberry for $200.
