Averatec debuts 22-inch D1005 all-in-one PC for $799
Averatec's 25.5-inch D1200 a bit too large for your tastes (or your bantam desk)? Fret not, as the very same company is today issuing a 22-inch version with similar specs. Speaking of which, the admittedly stylish all-in-one machine packs a 2.5GHz Core 2 Duo E5200 processor, a WXGA panel, 3GB of DDR2 RAM, a 320GB SATA hard drive, slot-loading DVD burner, X4500HD graphics, WiFi, gigabit Ethernet and a 2 megapixel webcam. Vista Home Premium is the OS included, but the whole rig will only set you back $799. If you're already sold, you can place your order today at a variety of non-shady e-tailers.

First....time commenter on Engadget - this looks sweet, real sexy like. Mmmm gonna get me one of them...
I have one of this 22 inch, not bad after you put an SSD drive in.
Windows 7 score is 3.8 due to the graphic cards.
Otherwise it workable.
What a fail of a first comment.

black iMac..
The iMac still beats it design wise hands down, the back view looks very shoddy, the piano black finish gives it a cheap and nasty look to it.
Plus with all those fans it certainly isnt going to be as quiet.
However it certainly is good bang for your buck and its nice to see some REAL competition in the AIO sector. The AIO netops are just lame.
@adderz
The cd drives on imacs are pretty damn loud themselves
@Adderz
Who cares? For that much less than an iMac I'd take this any day between the two.
Not to mention the power button and the headphone jack on the side are two huge advantages for this over the imac. Putting those on the back are two of the worst things about the imac.

Isn't it strange how Apple fanboys can find a way to link every news article on Engadget back to Apple in some way or another? Contrary to popular belief, Apple did NOT invent the all-in-one computer.
Wuh oh fire fox fail....
@bolmedias
You didn't know apple created life?
@Gi: Quite possibly, but they did not create the all-in-one computer.
Apple may not have created the all-in-one but they have championed it in the mainstream. I don't think it is unreasonable that when an all-in-one is mentioned it is compared to the most well known competitor in the market.
pystar!
With their power getting even better, and all-in-one with a hidden large USB drive or a NAT storage on a router works quite well for a lot of people.
Sure, you have your power gamers and graphics guys out there, but for a lot people this looks good.
Here's a good video overview of it.
What the hell resolution is WXGA? Cant you just spell out the resolution. Would make life much easier. My knowledge doesnt extend beyond vga and qvga.
its a pentium dual core not a core 2 duo

damn, knew it was too good to be true.
Ummm... pentium dual core is still same architecture as core2duo products... just less cache
@blah
Your point being?
That isn't a slot loading superdrive I see there. Its a normal CD tray that pops out. Won't that be a bit inconvenient?
Lenovo a600, which sells for around 670 for the 4gb ram/640gb hd config is still a better value than this despite being out for a while.
Looks ripe for a Hackintosh conversion, really, doesn't it?
No it will not be, unfortunately. It has X4500HD which does not have a driver in osx86.
The right side of it wider than the left
$799 for a glossy black very iMac-ish all-in-one. Hmmmm. If the parts are good, why not give it a shot.
You know what? Throw a copy of Windows 7 on here, and I won't need to buy that iMac anymore. Then I can just leave OS X to mobile computing. Thank you Averatec. Those specs really aren't all that shabby (outside of the video card), and I think it would work just fine for just about everything.
anybody know if averatec has stepped up their game w/r to system durability recently? As I recall, their 12.1" notebooks back in 2002-05 were riddled with overheating and motherboard failures, and their repair services were awful. Any idea if they've improved on this recently?
@bolmedias
Actually (And i'm saying this as a non-mac-fanboy-windows-user) for once, I do see the connection...
It does look similar to the iMac (if you squint just a little..) and they do [Apple..] make one of the more sucessful, and probably the best known AIO... So I suppose it stands to reason it was going to be used as a point of comparason...
Then of course.. the Windows fanboys will always come in, and bash the Apple fanboys, thus re-creating the same usual argument that's just so frequent on this site we know as engadget
But you're correct, Apple didn't make the first ever AIO, they didn't invent it, but they do have a habit of making very nice looking hardware.
They didn't invent the mobile phone, or the smart phone, but when they made one.. they sold 21.17 million (as of Q2 2009) of them (Source: Wikipedia.org/wiki/iPhone)
There are two types of people in this world: Apple Fanboys, and everyone else.
My biggest gripe with Apple Fanboys is that they really can link Apple back to every other product in the world. And they always do. Yes, Apple makes good stuff, but even Apple Fanboys should sometimes admit that a company has tried very hard. Avaratec is one of those companies in my opinion. They should be able to release their computers without someone instantly crying 'Black iMac'.
True but with this x4500 graphics, you can not get qe/ci which means no logic pro or photobooth.
And so it goes:
Wow, it's just as good as the iMac, and a lot cheaper!!
Woohoo I'm gonna git me one!
Aw shit, it doesn't have core 2.
The built-in graphics are crappola too.
It makes a lot of noise and the drive tray is skank.
Well it kinda looks like the iMac and it's a lot cheaper!
I'm gonna git me one! Apple sux.
I can get an all-in-one with quadcore, touch screen and like 3 gigs of RAM from Dell for about $900 =/
And in any color I want.
It looks like an iMac, you blind fanboys.
Better off buying a linux netbook with portability for about half the price (System76). Has a $70 2.5ghz with 800fsb dual core cpu. Throw an e8500 @3.16 ghz core2duo with a 1333fsb and upgrade the mem and now you have spent a grand+. But then you'd have a nice desktop pc at least. Just don't expect gaming graphics with the onboard chipset.
They could have at least been original with the design, rather than ripping off Apple, and doing a really bad job of it.
The design is a square with rounded corners and a screen in the center of it. Ohh, wait, Apple invented squares and circles...gotcha
They did a GREAT job of ripping off Apple's design. Now you have a nice form factor with an OS that the vast majority of people prefer.
I'm hardly an Apple fanboy, having avoided all Apple products except my 6gig iPod mini a few years ago. But really, it is legitimate to compare a product to other offerings in the same category. And having recently priced out some all-in-one desktops from the likes of Dell, HP, and Apple it is really hard to get past the elegance of the current iMacs at a relatively small premium. And the Apple refurbished units directly from the Apple online store pretty much eliminate that premium.
We started getting these at work probably about 2 weeks ago. They are pretty nice machines and run really nicely. We had to switch vendors about 4-5 months ago with MPC going out of business.
