Nokia throws "Xseries" into the ring, too?
You know the saying "where there's smoke, there's fire"? Yeah, well, this is kind of like that, except its.. uh, "where there's Cseries, there's Xseries." Stay with us: on Saturday we reported that Nokia had filed for a trademark on the "Cseries" name, ostensibly for a new line of smartphones, MIDs, or netbooks to complement its existing Nseries and Eseries lines. Now it seems the intriguing-sounding "Xseries" is in the mix, too, thanks to details coughed up by the EU's Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market. This particular mark was filed in Switzerland, but something tells us they don't just plan on selling some crazy new line of devices in the Alps, if you know what we're saying; like the Cseries, though, the question of what the Xseries is exactly remains to be answered.

dsteve303 @ Jul 20th 2009 1:49AM
CHRIS. SAY SUMTHING TO ME1
glenskey @ Jul 20th 2009 2:42AM
NO! ME CHRIS ME!!
boolean22 @ Jul 20th 2009 3:25AM
It seems that *maybe* XpressMusic could be rebranded as Xseries? I mean, why add another 'X' to some branding when you already have one... it's not like you're adding a letter to any product you do... like an 'x' or an 'i' or a 'my'... oh wait...
glenskey @ Jul 20th 2009 1:10AM
say it Chris, i dare you. say that it stands for xtra crap, :')
nah, jk. :')
pika2000 @ Jul 20th 2009 1:12AM
Here's hoping for Nokia's Android based smartphones. =)
ichheissesuperfantastisch @ Jul 20th 2009 10:03AM
seriously doubt it. It would completely undermine their investment into the S60 platform.
Erb @ Jul 20th 2009 1:12AM
"the question of what the Xseries is exactly remains to be answered."
Possibly a typo?
X and C are right next to each other. :D
~:Dhruv:~ @ Jul 20th 2009 1:26AM
i doubt its a typo... they WOULD have proof read their patent application imho......
Giroro @ Jul 20th 2009 1:43AM
No. They wouldn't have proofread it.
XCSERIES FTW.
Atanas Boev @ Jul 20th 2009 3:29AM
sounds like game centered phone to me. another attempt to revive ngage
Orinjz @ Jul 20th 2009 4:56AM
Don't Sony Ericsson already mark their phones as C-series, W-series, X-series etc? I was under the impression that you wouldn't be able to apply for a trademark that a competitor already uses in the same industry.
Haikibutsu @ Jul 20th 2009 1:17AM
X FOR XTREME!!!!!!
Jason @ Jul 20th 2009 1:20AM
X for piece of shit phone made by Nokia.
Andie @ Jul 20th 2009 3:29AM
@Haikibutsu
Even though I'd love to see them come up with something I'd never expect, a dedicated series for rugged phones is the most likely answer. C for consumer, X for xtreme.
Pontro! @ Jul 20th 2009 1:20AM
Ummm.....
eNtertainment
E-mail
Camera?
and
eXcitement???
jack1701 @ Jul 20th 2009 1:22AM
Or maybe a phone designed for the adult industry ?
rpahk @ Jul 20th 2009 5:26AM
jack 1701: that would be the XXX series....
Geekenstein @ Jul 21st 2009 6:56PM
Its the first of the new Symbian Foundation phone's, kinda exciting if you ask me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbwYrilwZqg&feature=related
sacapuntas @ Jul 20th 2009 1:21AM
The X is for "XENU".
Nokia is definitely going for the scientologist market, and I am ready to call them on it.
JoeyDee @ Jul 20th 2009 1:29AM
How about this:
http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/13/nokia-patent-app-suggests-n97s-form-factor-isnt-complicated-en/
That's MY guess. . .
mwheatley @ Jul 20th 2009 1:33AM
It's a network firewall is my guess, same as the cseries. Crossbeam Systems makes the C-series and X-Series firewalls though, not Nokia. Nokia does make a firewall line. Both Nokia and Crossbeam run Check Point.
Cheesus(Crust) @ Jul 20th 2009 1:53AM
Maybe they want to compete with SE's X series
sacapuntas @ Jul 20th 2009 1:58AM
hmmm, did anyone else just glance at what he said and see something else?
Muhammad-Oli @ Jul 20th 2009 1:59AM
Yeah, I'm now sure they're just copying Sony Ericsson's series. Just to be dicks I bet. Or more I wish they were doing it to be dicks cause how hilarious would that be?
10minutehobo @ Jul 20th 2009 6:17AM
SE Nokia Merger!!!
3rdsun @ Jul 20th 2009 12:07PM
SE has first dibbs on "X" a in X1 and X2
Doug Thacker @ Jul 20th 2009 1:55AM
Maybe it stands for eX-leaders (as in "former") of market. Or eX-clever. . . .
nowayman @ Jul 20th 2009 1:59AM
maybe "C" is a typo error, hence "X"?
Muhammad-Oli @ Jul 20th 2009 2:06AM
@sacapuntas: What do you see when you glance at SE X1? :)
jakeZ @ Jul 20th 2009 2:08AM
Wow. A lot of Nokia haters here. Are these all fruit fanbois worried about Symbian^2 and the phones that will be supporting it?
Khav @ Jul 20th 2009 12:29PM
Worried that when it comes out they might die of laughter.
Steve @ Jul 20th 2009 2:15AM
C-Series seems to be original than X-Series!
Danielle Danica @ Jul 20th 2009 2:17AM
It's JUST a letter....
The letter of the series doesn't necesarily determine the performance of the phones...
What difference would if make if it was ABCDFGHIJKLMOPQRSTUVWYZ instead of X?
neotokyo7 @ Jul 20th 2009 2:32AM
Now, I am confused.......Didn't IBM/Lenovo have the X series?
giuliop @ Jul 20th 2009 5:15AM
Yeah, lots of confusion... I find myself putting my Lenovo X200 to my ear more and more.
David @ Jul 20th 2009 2:39AM
at 3 we had the x-series range of products for a while which essentially meant a handset (mostly nokia and SE) came with certain apps like ORB and Sling..
http://www.three.co.uk/Help_Support/Terms_and_Conditions?content_aid=1214305745069
maybe nokia are branching out to include all that by default.
Li @ Jul 20th 2009 2:41AM

10minutehobo @ Jul 20th 2009 6:18AM

Verdigris @ Jul 20th 2009 6:34AM
I'm holding out for the iPhone 4gs2ld.
Rob Bourne @ Jul 20th 2009 3:21AM
Xpressmusic?
shpe11 @ Jul 20th 2009 3:23AM
whatever series will be, be with the Adobe flash lite APIs

Logboy @ Jul 20th 2009 5:34AM
X for it's going to be affordable and CDMA.
gerbick @ Jul 20th 2009 7:41AM
X, C, N, E... none of these spell clearer path to helping Nokia gain back the share they've lost in the US nor make sense of their products to all but the deepest Nokia fanboy.
Seriously Nokia... drop the damn letters and start working with the carriers to subsidize your phones. Also, work on the mess of Maemo, Qt, Ofono, Symbian S60/S40 internally too while you're at it.
And make Ovi suck less...
Marty @ Jul 20th 2009 8:41PM
Maybe it's for the new Nokia "Turd in a Shiny Box".
I love Nokia hardware, but the lack of software innovation is killing me. Next decent Andriod phone with a proper keyboard is in my future, I do believe. Because the N97 ain't setting the world on fire.
