Robot Doraemon travels back in time to shame Japanese children to success

If you're one of those nerds, you're probably quite stoked at the prospect of a real, honest-to-goodness Doraemon in your living room. And even if not, surely we can all agree that this guy is pretty damn cute, right? This ear-less, time travelin' cat features motion, light, heat, and sound sensors that let it react to its environment with a whole slew of facial features and vocal mannerisms that mean nothing to us, seeing as how it's communicating in Japanese. This guy is available from Bandai, starting September 3rd -- in the meantime, check out a few pics snapped at the Tokyo Toy Show below.

What am I missing?
a prevalent lack of pants.
Obvious
Frickin lasers!
sparkles
I do not agree that this guy is cute.
This thing cost 400 bucks at yesasia and I don't have a clue what it does even after looking at engadget's gallery.
I was just at Otakon this year, and I believe Doraemon is the official anime ambassador for Japan, oddly enough it* was "elected" to be so hahaha
That's Penfold from Danger Mouse that is
It's a blue Heathcliff?
Was thinking the same thing.
Doraemon first appeared in 1969.
Heathcliff created in 1973.
(according to Wikipedia)
Therefore, Heathcliff is an orange Doraemon.
Hello Kitty? Is that you?
A majority of the Asian teen and pre-teen population outside of the US watched Doraemon in the 80's and 90's. This is one of the most well known cartoon characters over there. Although this is targeted to the younger kids. It's still running in many countries and is still recognized and loved by many kids that are now well into their 30's. Hello Kitty is popular but it's only a character that does not have its own cartoon series.
Right. Doraemon is as popular in Asia as the Simpsons are in North America, if not more popular. But I guess Doraemon is as unknown in the USA as the Simpsons are in Japan.
I like this cutegadget. He is much cuter than the cross eyed blond woman who used to be on CNN.
WTF are we looking at here?
i love LITTLE DING DANG!
what is this for?
It's great that his eyes can change expressions, but what good does that do if he's still smiling while trying to look sad/angry?
My favorite manga of all times. The adventures series kicked ass. Helped me through elementary school.
Gotta love the robotic cat...
I'm surprised a lot of chaps on here don't know this fella.
We're not your chaps, friend.
im not your friend, buddy
I didnt know anyone this side of the world even knew about Doraemon. When I lived in Japan, I used Doraemon manga to help me learn to read Japanese because the kanji all had the furigana. Its targeted at kids and was a pretty good addition to my normal language studies, I picked up a lot of slang.
