Infinity Ward lending a hand on Modern Warfare 2 controller?
Time Crisis fans fully understand the awesomeness of a good gun when playing a gun-based title, so those very gamers will likely grasp the significance of Robert Bowling's Modern Warfare 2-related tweet. Just yesterday, the Infinity Ward employee made clear that he was "in a design meeting for a Modern Warfare 2 controller," and he sought the input of the Twitterverse regarding "concave or convex grips for the analog sticks." If you'll recall, this title can already be secured with an actual pair of night vision goggles, so tossing in some sort of rifle or semiautomatic weapon would just sweeten the pot even further -- chances are, though, this is just gonna be modeled after the plain jane Xbox 360 pad. When contacted by our pals over at Joystiq, Bowling wouldn't elaborate much, only noting that the controller "isn't being manufactured by [Infinity Ward] or [Activision]." So, that means it is being manufactured though, right?

Sweet Jesus; do we really need MORE peripherals in the marketplace? Wow Activision, seems EVERY game you put out is mandated to have its own controller as an option.
Funny how I go from real to fake. I was carrying an M4 for real in Iraq.
You would also be changing sides...
So would that mean no need to use a stupid analog stick to Aim????
that would heaven... why they ever dropped the guns from systems in the first place i'll never know.
I might actually start buying FPS's
They dropped guns because the only reason those guns worked is because they detected the electrons shooting from the CRT screens. As they all shot one after the other, the current electron detected would show the position. However, on today's displays, all pixels are shown at the same time, and so anything detectable would be of no use anyway. The only somewhat viable option would be cameras - expensive, and the software would have to be quite powerful.
umm or IR tracking guns that work like the wii controllers do...
oh wait they already make those
wtf are you talking about?
Where is the grenade?
While it might be hard to move your character around in the game while using this, however I think this is the direction controllers should go. That is unless they had a mat on the ground that you could use your feet to push on the direction you wanted to go in (or jump).
Add in a small LCD into the scope and use the clip as a replaceable battery pack and it would be great. I may even have to get a game console if the HD graphics were lifelike enough. It would look great on my 120" projector screen.
They should add like a track pad or something where the buttons are and to allow you to move your character with your thumb.
We need to encourage people to get off the couch to play these realistic games. If you actually go to war, not too many soldiers sit down while fighting. :) And freeing up your hands to move the gun around and pull the trigger would work pretty good.
Using your whole body as the controller and to move on screen makes more sense to me.
The amount of stupid exhibited in the comments above is mind blowing...
Let's forget the impracticality of a controller like this IF it was real...lets forget the sheer lameness of having to fork out for such a controller IF it was real...No...lets talk about how REALLY shoddy the above photo-shop is and YET people still thought it was "awesome" despite not making any practical sense, and the fact the linked to content does not even begin to mention such a monstrosity.
Shocking isn't it :O
The amount of stupidity, not the amount of stupid.
Once again in these comments, the irony.
amen
Jarrod...I know what I meant and how I meant to say it...so irony, this is not.
yeah i'm really shocked at the number of people that think this will be a big gun-shaped peripheral. it's just going to be a MW2-branded controller, maybe with the analog sticks and buttons tweaked.
you guys remember the game gun video from youtube?
thats the best FPSG controller
It looks like some people are worried that their 'skills' of using a standard controller are going to become obsolete... I can't believe there are people would wouldn't want to see this produced. Are you worried that the people with this controller would have an unfair advantage?
They need to have a realistic recoil and weight of a real gun and allow it to be used in other games, and it would be where we should be 20 years after I used the Nintendo blaster to play Duck Hunt.
They need to have a few foam grenades as well. :)
I think its more that people are worried games are going to be dumbed down even more to accomidate the use of yet another silly device.
I Don't think pointing a piece of plastic at your screen really adds anything to the "Realism" of the game. Sure its fun for rail shooters and stuff (even though those get boring quickly once you memorize the track and enemy positions) but when you start making first person shooter games that require you to hold a piece of plastic with a joystick on it to move, the entire game play has to slow down to accommodate the awkward movement controls (have you ever played any of the game in Capcoms very unsuccessful "Gun Survivor" series...or even COD on the Wii)
now if you could move around via and omni-directional treadmill, with a VR headset (instead of being limited to pointing at at 50(ish)'' target. That would be realism. But LightGuns for FPSes are nothing more then a gimmick
No, it's because people think "what do I do in a FPS? I shoot people!" and fixate on that. Lets take COD4. You're holding your gun...cool...so REAL...until you're holding a sidearm on the screen but a full sized semi-auto in your hands...or you're planting a claymore and it's no so real anymore...or you've forgotten how awkward it would feel controlling running jumping and strafing when the peripheral manufacturer was only thinking about your experience with the gun and not the myriad of OTHER real world actions that a controller actually has to effectively replicate. So what about SEVERAL peripherals for each game...fake gun, fake side arm, fake rocket launcher, fake c4, grenades, smoke bombs...a real flag in your bedroom that you have to capture...why should only ONE part of the game "feel real"?
People want realism, but unless you game is only 2 dimensional in what you're actually doing...you will ALWAYS need buttons...and lots of them. Guitar hero has you playing guitar...that's it...so a dedicated controller if fine...if suddenly you have to replicate different movements and actions a giant plastic guitar would seem silly.
Imagine - hit the cartridge, and it reloads. Look down the scope, and a small dedicated screen is waiting for you. Rumble causes it to shake as you pull the trigger. Awesome.
no, just no. Not until natal comes out at the least
Henceforth all FPS games are to be dumbed down even further.
what if you got to run on a 360 treadmill to move? hahahahaha that would be awesome.

but ya...I remember when it was a feat to beat a game even on standard difficulty (like DOOM or Duke3d, they wouldn't even let you finish the game on the easy difficulty if i remember correctly), now its just expected to beat the game within a few days so you can start playing the same 5 maps over and over again in multiplayer.
ugh...-_-
@Grammar Delinquent: The only version of Doom that wouldn't let you finish the game on lower difficulties was the SNES version. For some reason it would not let you play anything past Knee Deep in the Dead on the lowest difficulty, or past The Shores of Hell on the next lowest. It seemed kind of arbitrary, since the PC version had no such restriction. Other console releases from the same period didn't follow the same structure or left out levels entirely, but the entire game was completable at the easiest difficulties.
please no, leave it to time crisis and duck hunt.
unless this is for incorporation with project Natal however....(pooint and shoot detection? and joysticks for movement, rest of buttons could be side mounted for gear, grenades, start, etc.)
uh, Natal is coming out a full year after MW2 is released...
i can't believe how many people fell for that image. it's just going to be a MW2-branded controller.
Woot M4!
wow, you're a genius, thanks for letting me know.
If they do make a Modern Warfare 2 controller its gonna be a regular Xbox 360 controller with a different skin/print/casing. Maybe something along the lines of the controller they are selling with the limited edition Halo ODST....which is bad ass by the way!
That's sick!!
LOL @ all the idiots thinking its real, and all the fools who are calling out endgadget on their obvious gag of a controller.
"OMG how would that even work?!"
Grenades could be launched from an underbarrel GL.
this is gonna be sick.
Close the curtains, unless you want a nosy neighbor to call SWAT on yer ass!
As much as I pine for the return of good light gun games (I've been tempted to buy an old TV just so I can play Hogan's Alley and Duckhunt again), I can't see this working out well with a game like COD4. It would be very awkward controlling movement while trying to aim the gun around.
i highly, highly doubt that is what they are doing. that image is more of a joke than anything. it won't be too much different from a normal controller.
Gayness. Where is my MP5?
I'm trying to imagine just how gay someone wearing the night vision goggles, toting this monstrosity, and hopping around the family room is going to look but I can't because there is simply no precedent that is even close to that level dorkhood to use as a reference point.
Better get this while you still can.
I can't wait for MW2, but the night vision goggles were enough lol
This and Tony hawk skateboard can go screw each other. When are they going to stop producing all this add ons to games that are shitty plastic crap that don't add anything to the game play. Don't forget that you also have to have some kind of receiver attached to your monitor also.
project natal
"No, seriously, this is a game controller. I'm just taking it over to my friends house."

they should make this for modern warfare along with a sidearm. once the rifle is out of ammo, you go to your sidearm.
