Toshiba TG01 passes FCC with some CDMA thrown in
The Snapdragon-powered Toshiba TG01 is a beast of a phone -- as Windows Mobile-powered phones go, anyway -- but for Americans, there's one small problem: it's not clear how, when, or if it's getting here. We still don't have many answers there, but we've got one piece of very encouraging news in the FCC approval of a CDMA flavor today, bearing all the hardware you'll need to use the phone on a carrier like... oh, you know, Sprint or Verizon. Even better, the test documents list the device as "production" -- many FCC filings use prototype hardware -- suggesting that this is pretty close to being ready for market. So, as we said, Sprint or Verizon have to be ramping up for this -- but which one is it? Both?

I like my Pre but im willing to consider going back to WM. if i see WM7 or at least 6.5 thatll be a huge upgrade. just not that crazy colored OS i keep seeing on this phone.
Yea, I'm in the same position. Love my Pre to death, but when WM7 comes out the pre had better of expanded a lot. 6.5 is pretty nice, but definitely the jump to the new WM7 requirements will make 6.5 devices look ancient.
I have windows 6.5 on my vogue sprint touch. Its really nice! A little slow... but nice!
I am thinking of getting a touch pro 2 when it comes out.
I will miss 6.5 for a while.
I have a vogue too, but why get the tp2 when you could get this beast!
it'll probably cost a lot though :/
The problem with WM is and always has been backwards compatibility because of its roots with Windows CE. They can't toss everything to the wind the same way Palm and Apple can. They can't. Reason being that CE is used in a lot of other things besides smartphones, and you basically need a total rewrite of CE at this point.
They need to get the Zune team (like they have), scrap everything, and come up with something which sacrifices 90% of the WM that lingers on in 6.5 and 6. I've had it with all the weird never-changing sharp edged dialog boxes you need to tap perfectly with the stylus, I'm tired of laggy animations and half-assed attempts by every OEM to add something flashy (I'm looking at you HTC with the Rhodium/Topaz/Tachi Menu "Enhancements" that drive me insane).
No, WM was far ahead of its time, but the pressure from all the other Smartphone OSes that deliver far superior UIs, performance, and features necessitate a complete reboot of the platform.
Flame me haters, just know this comes from someone who had a Dell Axim X30, an HTC Apache, HTC Mogul, HTC Touch Pro, and every Palm/Visor ever made, and finally jumped ship to an iPhone. Never going back.
"is a beast of a phone -- as Windows Mobile-powered phones go, anyway " it wouldn't be an engadget story unless they had to dig at Microsoft at least once. Whats the matter you couldn't work a way to incorporate Apple into the story? I'm sure the next story will be a full spread on how to cut and paste on the iPhone.
I was thinking the same thing when I read that.
yea but its pretty much the truth.. Windows Mobile sucks, its slow, laggy and not user friendly (i am a former winmo user) and this is coming from an apple hater and dedicated windows pc user... I thought the world knew this? windows PC's are good but windows mobile phones suck no matter what the specs.... but dont get me wrong if windows mobile 7 ( have no faith what so ever that winmo 6.5 is gonna be anything more than a 6.0 reskin like 6.1 was with essentially the same laggy performance) can blow my mind like win 7 on a PC has, then ill retract that statement.. but honestly its pretty much public perception that winmo sucks but is great for business user even tho blackberry can do the same just slightly faster and prettier.
Justin, like Chris you are spouting ignorance that's based on data information.
Go and actually TRY a WM 6.5 ROM then talk.
Furthermore, if you've seen HTC's implementation of TF3D 2.5 on WM, then you wouldn't even need to wait until WM7 to retract your statements.
TF3D 2.5 + WM6.5 = a prettier interface combo than any other phone on the market (yes Im fully aware that TF3D 2.5 is not commercially available yet, nor has it been ported to the TG01, but the XDA-devs are working on all sorts of ports at the moment).
Add into the mix the most powerful hardware a mobile phone has ever seen (in the form of this TG01) and you've got a killer device indeed.
For the sake of clarity, data = dated
Just in right. I have used Windows mobile phones for years, and the interface is slow and laggy. Not to mention the design paradigm was created for the needs and standards of a decade ago, with a mess of hierarchical menus and tiny screen elements made for a stylus. The Kernel is good, but the libraries and frameworks are terrible. The graphics subsystem, GDI, has no hardware graphics acceleration support, and the OS freezes up at least once or twice a day without any 3rd party software. I still remember the day I played with an iPhone back in 2007 and compared it to the WinMo Treo I had. To say it was a far better device is one hell of an understatement. Similarly, new phones like the Pre and the newest Android devices make Windows Mobile 6.x like very dated.
(BTW, I am not a Microsoft hater. I really hope Windows Mobile 7.x is great because I am a .NET developer and would love to see a native WPF interface.)
sprint please, thank you
Sprint you better take this one up!!
Come on Verizon, get a good phone for once.
And not delay it's release forever.
And don't handicap it.
You know they will, sprint better take it.
The way things ago going recently Verizon may not be handicapping phones any more. Just look a their version of the HTC Snap, it cost les than the Sprint version yet it has wifi, and is world phone capable(granted the Sprint version is the only one to have HTC home or whatever its called, I rather have wifi or gsm over it). Or how the TP2, for their service is suppose to get 3.5mm jack. If Verizon gets this I doubt they will handicap it, as they seem to be learning.
Pick this up sprint!!
If Sprint picks this up, I'll SERIOUSLY give it some consideration, much more so than the Touch Pro 2, which is little more than a Touch Pro with a larger screen (i mean seriously HTC, I love your products, but after 1 year all you guys could do hardware wise is change the screen and dimensions of the phone? -- no Tegra, no Snapdragon, no added RAM, ROM, 5 MP camera, nothing?)
Being on AT&T at the moment and consistently not even getting calls let alone delayed voicemails two weeks later, I'm seriously looking to jump carriers. Subsidize this to $200 with Unlimited Everything on Sprint, I'll check it out.
If they could leave their sledge and block in the closet, Verizon could really use this phone. Sprint has the Pre, AT&T the iPhone, T-Mobile the G#'s, Verizon the _____: enough said. (Maybe the Chocolates, wdk)
yep, just did that.
I ALMOST bought verizon from their online store, but wanted to talk to someone about it first. Went to the kiosk in the mall, and it was a T-mobile kiosk.
I've heard all sorts of negative things about their reception but lo-and-behold, T-mobile's reception fits my life style.. better than the AT&T that I had for 9 years.
I got the promotion plus plan + 1000 texts + 15% corporate discount
I'll live without picture messaging and 3G for now. I had all those bells and whistles on AT&T but intermittent service and delayed texts and voicemails. Kind of ruins the experience.
No GSM love ??? =(
GSM gets cool new phones every day. It's about time CDMA got something.
Also forgot to mention that a GSM TG01 already exists, and is on sale in Europe as we speak...
