Windows 7 RTM begins rollout August 6th, OEMs and some beta testers to get early headstart
So last we heard Windows 7 would be officially hitting RTM status some time this month, but as to when we'd be able to get our hands on it, turns out that's a very tricky question. According to the official Windows blog, OEMs will be able to get it approximately two days after the OS goes RTM, and beta testers who are already subscribed to TechNet can download RTM shortly after it happens for free. Independent software and hardware vendors can download via Microsoft Connect / MSDN on August 6th. Same goes for MSDN-subscribed developers and IT Professionals with a TechNet account, but only the English language version. Microsoft Partner Program Gold / Certified members can join the fun August 16th via Microsoft Partner Network portal on the 16th, and Action Pack Subscribers on August 23rd -- both also English only. All other language versions for those groups are due out by October 1st.
Finally, if you don't happen to fall in any of those categories, Microsoft is happy to remind you that Release Candidate doesn't start giving the annoying reboots until March 1st, 2010, with full expiration happening June 1st -- plenty of time to avoid picking up a copy if you didn't get a chance to pre-order at the much more reasonable discount price.

Woohoo!
hmmm... no thanks
OMG! Reformat and reinstall here I come!
I can't wait to ditch Vista! My installation has been feeling a little bloated!
This needs to hit the interwebs and a crack needs to come!
So 2 days after it hits RTM it will hit torrent sites HURRAH !
You mean two days before, right?
and what's with the freaking spam ..... (2 posts above me)
Next to the rank up / down is a lovely Report button for spam :)
$14.99 from my university bookstore. :) can't wait to refresh my laptop.
$0.00 from my favorite private trackers.
Wow, that's a steal :)
man i wish i had a college that'd sell it for 75$ or less, I'd so buy it. My stupid college doesn't seem to do any deals just hand out fliers to a company that sells software cheap but not that cheap
I get it free with my college! MSDN + NCSU FTW!
Engineer student = MSDNAA = Free! Fuck yeah, I knew giving up a social life during the school year would payoff eventually.
I have MSDNAA too. It will probably be Professional, which isn't bad since Media Center is included unlike in Vista Business.

3....... 2........ 1............
(so hard to read faded letters)
and there was much rejoicing :)
Ugh. can we just end the Holy Grail jokes? It's just so pathetic. I die a little bit inside for the human race every time I hear one.
what a stranger person
I would install Windows 7 in a second, but it would probably void my laptop's warranty.
It's not going to void your laptop's hardware warranty. They may or may not support the software, though.
Just boot up a recovery disc then and reinstall it. That should be the least of your worries. I reloaded my laptop the day I got it with a clean version of Vista, so much nicer.
Why downrank, this is actually true.
Until Apple stops charging six times as much for their hardware as it's worth, no, it isn't true at all.
So, the RTM will be the exact same thing as we will get in the retail version come October? Let's say I "pirated it", all future updates and such would work with it, maybe with slight workarounds?
Wow....
Build 7600 16835 Is the Final RTM, 7600 Build 16836 is the Commercial release with all the language packs.
I have it installed in a vm and on a couple computers, and its fully activated - 93 days before its in the store.
Snow Leopard doesn't run on my G4 eMac.
Ubuntu does.
Until OS X picks up support for hardware people actually own, nobody is going to feel obligated to port their apps to it.
Question for you guys. I have a Sony VAIO with Windows Vista. I'm not sure if it's Vanilla Vista or not. How do I figure that out? Doesn't Sony usually custom hack Windows? Would I have to wait for the Sony version?
I have W7 RC running on my Sony Vaio VGN-N320E, and the only thing that doesn't work about it are the brightness controls. Otherwise the volume only goes up or down by 2%.
Really?
Remind me again what Snow Leopard brings to the table for consumers that isn't already present in Leopard? Cause I can't think of anything. Oh, wait, there's the integrated disappearing buttons in the QuickTime windows. I forgot, sorry. That makes the upgrade all worth it.
Hasn't Apple already acknowledged this is a minor update by not significantly changing the name, and only charging $29 for it?
Why again would anyone be clamoring to get Snow Leopard when it doesn't really add anything to what already exists?
There seems to be a ***LOT*** more excitement over Windows 7 out there than there is about Snow Leopard. Windows 7 has a lot of positive hype behind it... Snow Leopard is generally met with a "ho hum" because it's really just a minor refinement of what is already out there.
your 0.65 check is in the mail.
Ok, dumb question, but I need a serious answer:
I'm beta testing Windows 7 right now. Love it. Been playing around with it for the past couple months. Pre-ordered Windows 7 Home earlier late last month through Amazon for $50. So, on August 8th, Windows 7 beta won't work anymore or what? Will have I have to downgrade to Vista for a couple months? I dread the thought of going back to Vista...
If you're actually running the Beta you should upgrade to the Release Candidate. If you're running the Release Candidate you're fine until March.
Pretty much. That and you will need another OS on there anyways to upgrade the OS since you purchased an upgrade.
Cool, I can't wait to get my hands on a copy so I can finish testing a few things. I'm mostly interested in any changes they've made to the Media Center functionality. Hopefully they've patched up whatever has been causing some of the random Explorer crashes that have been happening on two of my systems as well.
Sweet I have a technet account. Have a metric crap ton of people I'm upgrading to Win 7 for free.
can i be one of them? ;)
As do I, however I also am in the Win7 Beta on connect.microsoft.com, does this mean I will be able to get it sooner...like in a few days?
I'll tell one RTM of Win 7. I've been meaning to get a better life.
take** not tell
where's edit button located? i'm sure it's so transparent a caveman couldn't even see it.
take*
so can someone tell me what's the pros of microsoft 7? because i'm really not a computer person but i'm trying to keep up with what's going on
Besides everything? If you've dealt with Vista, then you know how stubborn it can be. Take the speed and ease of XP + the security and look/feel of Vista, and you have 7.
It's pretty much better in every way possible. One of my favorite things are all of the [windows] key combos. Being able to change my monitor on the fly with [windows]+p will be a godsend as I often play games on my TV in another room and currently have to run up and down stairs every time I want to change to the downstairs display (before you ask, 50' vga cable).
Mainly, its just way way WAY faster, more stable, gorgeous, and much simpler to use. Having it on my laptop, I feel like I'm tying my hands together every time I go back to my vista desktop.
It's an operating system that's actually faster than it's predecessor.
My absolute favorite features on W7 are:
1. The ability to drag windows that are maximized without clicking a "restore down" button. Also the automatic sizing features are amazing, especially for dual monitor setups.
2. The taskbar and everything related to it is awesome.
3. The lowered resource usage. RC1 uses about 700k RAM for me. Way higher than XP Pro (200k RAM) but much less than Vista (over 1000k).
I did a fresh install for the Release Candidate, can I upgrade from the upgrade edition without having to re-install Vista?
Yep.
Early headstart?
Is that anything like an advance warning, dead body, convicted felon, forced rape, or innocent bystander?
lol, sure buddy, that's why you felt like you needed to come in here and check it out, right?
I really can't wait to install Windows 7 on my main desktop. I finally upgraded to Vista this year (for good that is, had the disc for years) and it actually runs quite fast for me and even faster then XP based on my experience. All my old, outdated programs crash a lot though (Dreamweaver 8 and CuteFTP)
Does anyone know what versions of Windows 7 support dynamic raid disks? Probably only business and ultimate like with Vista.
I have Windows 7 on an old HP 17" Core 2 Duo 1.5ghz laptop and it runs really well. Some steam games I can't get to run, but no big deal.
nice baby! I can finally venture out from the land of Vista and into the cool calm beach of Windows 7.....ahhh
*no sarcasm intended*
I have a question about RTM...Does this mean by Aug. 6th (sometime near there), that the Windows 7 RTM will be like the Windows 7 that's coming out in October? Will it update, function, etc like the Windows 7 in October?
Last but not least...I was wondering if I torrent this, can it be cracked into the final version of Windows 7? Or do I have to install the final version when it comes out in October?
THANKS! :D!!!
@Doug: An even better question would be, what does Snow Leopard offer that Windows 7 doesn't and the answer would be nothing. In fact, most of the improvements being touted in Snow Leopard have been available in Windows for years.
Snow Leopard may well be a useful upgrade for existing Mac users but it doesn't offer any killer feature that would drive additional Mac sales.
Man, why did I bother with the last RC? If it was so close to RTM why didn't they just hold off? Oh well, hopefully my work will get it to me soon so I can put it through its paces.

damn you Australia and your not having this offer
I'll just get my copy from my MSDN account. Unfortunately I'll have to buy a copy for my wife, but the college offers those wonderful discounts so shouldn't be bad. :D
I can't wait until I'll be able to use my computer to record 3 shows at once
