Fujifilm's FinePix Real 3D W1 camera and Real 3D V1 picture viewer detailed, can do 3D movies as well
Not that it wasn't official when Time featured it early last week, but now Fujifilm's now rolled out the proverbial red carpet for its FinePix Real 3D W1 camera, with a press release providing more details about both it and the Real 3D V1 8-inch picture viewer. Some of more notable features on the W1 -- aside from being the touted "world's first 3D imagine system," of course -- is a 3x optical zoom, a 3D LCD system for on-camera viewing, Dual Capture Shooting Mode for taking two shots simultaneously with different settings, and just to be perfectly clear, the ability to shoot video in three mind-blowing dimensions. Additionally, the two lens can be used for some more creative, but decidedly old-fashioned 2D photography. As for the V1 display, it's got a 3D / 2D LCD panel with 800 x 600 resolution, supports playback of 3D pics and movies, and supports SD / SDHC. No word on what the resolution / card support is for the camera, but for now we're gonna guess it's at parity with the frame. If you're wanting physical 3D prints, Fujifilm says it'll be providing that service, doing the prints in-house and send them your way. Actual printers for purchase will come once a sustainable market exists (assuming that happens). The W1 camera and V1 frame are listed with a September 2009 launch date, as we previously heard -- price is curiously listed as TBA, but since Time already let slip a $600 estimate, take that as your ballpark estimate for the interim.

Now how would we do this ? Throw things at the camera ?
yes then quickly move out of the way
this sounds awesome
I plan on throwing some D's at it. I hope it's easy to clean...
why does Wall-E seem to be taking over the gadget world?!
agreed... this camera is flippin' smiling at me.
i wonder if anyone else is as drunk as i am posting right now.
I'll take 3! D
smh...that was so corny :/
3D movies. Woo hoo! I want to see what the viewer looks like... And I wonder if existing 3D movies (such as Beowolf and Monsters vs Aliens) could be viewed on it - I see a new market...
This is fantastic, but what is the 3D video resolution? If it's 720p, I just might die.
A second gen that is waterproof just might make the world a happy place to live!
I know drunken teens and young adults are gonna upload their compromising photos and videos on Facebook, MySpace, and the like.
Now ruining futures in 3 dimensions!
Dumb asses.
I'll be in my bunk.
Great, Blair Witch meets Dr. Tongue'd 3-d house of stewardess.
Alright. I'm buying this. Period.
WOOOOT OFFFF!
Nice! Been playing with 3D Camera on my iPhone and having a blast with that. Good for the interim at least.
Awesome, just when Youtube now has a 3d feature thing!
My 3D picture kiosk is becoming more of a reality, now I won't have to buy two cameras.
this is actually a pretty large step in consumer technology, It's a very strong sign of this new 3D renissance. It's pretty amazing to see the tech spread through theatres, cameras, monitors, medical imaging, televisions, videogames, etc.
Holodeck here we come!
It's a small step for Fujifilm, a huge leap for consumer electronics.
Make all the viewmaster jokes you want, but 3d photography is here to stay! I inherited my grampa's stereo camera and I've been craving a digital version ever since. Even if this camera fails, at least it opens up the market for more stereo digicams. I do feel that fuji is stretching it by offering 3d prints and frames. I can't imagine that these offer a true 3d experience. I want one pic for the left eye and one pic for the right. I'll do the rest.
Oh god...
everyone talks about this being new important tech, but honestly, who really cares about a 3d picture? It's kinda "neat," but really now... Useless. Advancements in touchscreens are gonna be the most important thing to happen in tech for a while, as it has a wow factor, as well as some utility. This, on the other hand, will never be affordable or have any utility whatsoever.
Imagine having the ability to use a Head Mounted Display and enter your own 3D pictures/videos as a lifesize 3D enviroment and walking about this space, enjoying the memory and immersion.
Thats what the future of 3D photography holds,
Touchscreen is nice, I'm not saying one is better then the other. Just understand that 3D will be everywhere and will change home entertainment and gaming in a rudimentry way. I would love to look at pictures of my family and friends and see them in true 3D depth, and the possibility to view these images on the new 3D televisions, or with a HUD, or on a 3D monitor seems great.
Who really cares?
I do.
Really.
I hope that answers your question.
"This, on the other hand, will never be affordable or have any utility whatsoever."
It certainly does have utility whatsoever. It takes stereoscopic pictures digitally, provides an easy way to view them with naked, uncrossed eyes, and has the ability to generate prints that can also be viewed by naked eyes.
That may not be utility that you care about. But it is utility.
Affordable? I can afford it. We'll see if the prices come down.
I love touchscreens as much as the next guy (well except for the greasy fingerprints all over my screen).
I, for one, am stoked.
Imagine these potential uses for stereoscopic imagine:
3D virtual tours would be incredible for real estate, potential college students who can't afford to fly across the country to see what a campus truly looks like, or people who want to get a good idea what certain landscapes look like (Grand Canyon, the moon) but are for whatever reason unable to go.
Pictures of your kids, grandkids in their most precious moments. A 2D picture is great, but it doesn't give all the depth, contours that 3D can give. Remember, this camera will capture 2 different images at the same time; this means that you will have a two and three-dimensional representation of any image you take. This is especially great for family members who live far away. There is a certain personal touch that you lack when watching a home video on the TV. I have created many 3D home movies, and while rewatching them, it is like reliving the experience over and over again.
There is another thing that the 3D market is also destined to dominate.... that, my friends, is pornography. Honestly, just take a moment to reflect on that. Can you honestly say that if 3D really does become easy and affordable to a lot of people that the market for this tech won't increase exponentially, if for no other reason than for porn? Remember this: porn was one of the deciding factors in the VHS/Beta format war.
Maybe I'm nothing more than a 3D fanboy. Maybe you're nothing but a 3D hater. Who knows? One thing is for sure: 3D is back, and it may actually stand a chance this time--not necessarily to replace the 2D market but instead to create more options. If you have the hardware for viewing 3D (and a lot of new TVs are coming with this at no extra cost), why not have something like this camera, knowing it can give you both a 2D AND 3D image at the same time, especially if the cost comes down a little bit? Any why not buy Disney's "Up" if the blu-ray includes the 2D and 3D image?
So... this Youtube beta thing could get a chance:

I was at a trade show yesterday and watched a HD test film in 3-D on a 60 inch LCD monitor.
Was playing off a HDCAM-SR deck 1920 x 1080 @ 29.97 fps
Looked pretty cool.
There are many new 3-D products out or about to be released.
i thought it would be more expenside, but $600 is not to bad
Looks like a view finder i has as a kid. but much more expensive and cool
Finally, 3D pron!!!
Hopefully the price will come down a bit. It's really just 2 point and shoot cams in a single housing.
it is just like two point and shoots in a single housing... however it has unique processing of the images, AND it does have the special screen on the back able to display the 3d images... so thats deffinatly unique!, and worth the lil extra price.
of course that's until the competition
I had a Nimslo 3D camera back in the mid '80's.
Stopped using it not because of the print quality or cost, but because the stupid Nimslo company would often take 3 or 4 months to process a roll of film into lenticular prints.
I pulled out an old album of the prints recently, and it was magical.
Seeing things frozen in time in 3D is hard to describe.
I had shots taken of my old work research project, and I spent hours looking at them.
The detail and amount of information you get from the spatial representation is far beyond what you get from still 2D photos or even video.
I can't wait for this new camera and the photo frame which goes with it.
Screw the sending out the prints part, if the digital 3D lenticular system is any good, I'll just use that to view the shots.
Oh, and if the Fuji software supports it, I'll scan my old Nimslo 3D negatives and put them on this thing too.
On their webpage it says that video is recording in motion jpeg at 640x480. (3D AVI)
doh... kinda.
Well, as history has shown, every 50 years or so stereoscopic 3D makes a emergence and is very popular for a few years or so and then dramatically declines. I'm crossing my fingers that technology and "correct" 3D recording/editing techniques keep the trend alive this time around.
(eventually it will, it's inevitable IMO)
