Rugged Duros 8404 tablet PC: now with Atom, sunlight-viewable LCD
We're not saying that Intel's Atom CPUs are lightning fast or anything, but even the 1.6GHz N270 is snappier than the lethargic 1GHz Celeron M that was placed in last year's Duros tablet. In an effort to make the 8404 viable once more, Duros has introduced an equally rugged new model with an Atom processor, hot-swappable battery and an 8.4-inch SVGA sunlight-viewable touchscreen. You'll still find an IP65 sealed enclosure (perfect for those leisurely jaunts through Deadfoot), as well as Windows XP running the show. For those craving extras, the 8404 can be equipped with WiFi, WWAN connectivity, GPS and Bluetooth, not to mention 1GB of RAM, a vehicle dock, integrated Intel graphics, a 120GB hard drive and a single USB 2.0 socket. There's no mention of price, but considering that you can run this thing over with a snowmobile and continue your Gchat session where you left off, we'd expect to fork over quite the premium.

sunlight viewable??? heard of screens like this before... they never live up to the hype
I wonder if this device includes the first LCD screens from Pixel Qi? Anyone from Pixel Qi care to comment?
Is that a Gateway?
It looks so manly and tough, too bad it has a panzy ass Atom cpu :( Comon intel get those CULV in gear, quit this Atom crap.
Actually, I think in this application an Atom makes sense. Keep it running all day and then some.
And it should run Linux fairly well, especially something like Ubuntu Netbook, as long as they thought about drivers when spec'ing out the hardware.
CULV based laptops systems can run around 8hrs they are only 5W-7W cpu's. As long as they are paired with the right chipset and display like this unit is battery life can be extended even more.
whats wrong with the atom? other than being a fourth of the cost of one of the core 2 ulv. I have 900ha netbook with atom, i do everything i normally do on my desktop pretty much. Its great for web browser, any application that you could even think of running on a device this small, and it even games. I can play Wow pretty smoothly. Stop reading reviews/comment on tomshardware/engadget of other ppl dissing this thing who have never even used it, and go try it yourself.
Oh, and to reply to the battery life part. So CULV use about 5-7w? paired with a chipset that would be atleast 14-17W. How big do you think the battery on this could possibly be? your not getting 8Hours.
Intel Atom max TDP= 2.5W
http://ark.intel.com/chipset.aspx?familyID=35553
ich7 Chipset TDP= 9.8W
The sad part is youll be paying top dollar for the ruggedness and not for the CPU. Still probably over 2k......
What's the screen size?
If you'd bother to read more than the title, the post says "8.4-inch SVGA sunlight-viewable touchscreen".
Would love something like this for On-Site Service calls.
I go through laptops like crazy.
