Palm webOS 1.1 now available, fixes iTunes 8.2.1 syncing
Here are a few things we've noticed after playing with the update for a little bit:
- Scrolling through long lists (like contacts) seems improved. We're seeing a lot less loading, and only the occasional hiccup.
- Push email now seems to actively delete (and represent the count properly) in the background.
- Folder orders for IMAP Gmail accounts are now correct. Previous versions of the software had them totally out of whack.
- The email alert sound is different -- softer.
- App load times seem a bit snappier. In fact, the whole device feels a little snappier.
- Maybe we're crazy, but there seems to be a new animation for the drop-down menus.
Anything else you guys are seeing? Tell us in comments! Also, PreCentral has an extensive list of undocumented features.

This is my first comment here:
If I bought the phone and the computer, then I should be able to do whatever I want with them.
You can. Palm cannot.
There's a great deal of pre owners that don't even use itunes so it doesn't matter if this capability on the pre or not.
I'm with Paul A. Chapel on this one! I agree with everything he says. [I'm a complete ass munch too]
For all the losers insulting the entity known as apple; do you think that you've caused an apple with a bite sized chunk missing to weep apple juice tears? Corporations are not people.
Funny how everytime the PRE is mentioned here come the Apple Fanboys *cough* Paul *cough* crying out as to why the iPhone is so superior to the Pre. Give it up already and just move on with the fact that nobody cares about your blunder about how great you think apple products are!
I love it! It just shows how bad Palm sucks and needs a company like Apple and iTunes to make their Pre-school phone relevant and easy to use. Apple has every right to break this hack and even file a lawsuit against Palm for software infringement. Apple has developed their proprietary iTunes software for 10 years. To have a company like Palm blatantly come in and hack their software to help promote their Pre-school phone is illegal. All in all, it's just Apple-Envy, so hopefully Apple will just sue Palm for it.........while they're at it, maybe they can sue Palm for all of the other patented infringements they stole from the iPhone for the Pre-school? Awe, isn't competiton great!?!
Holy crap, you're a moron. Apple will never, EVER sue Palm over the Pre. EVER. For every patent Apple has that the Pre infringes, Palm has 5 that Apple is infringing. Seriously, remember who invented the palm-top computer? Who was first to market a "smart" phone? That's why Palm is getting so close to Apple's patents. Palm knows Apple can't do anything about it. Look at the multitouch screen with the exact same implementation as Apple. Did they take the UI from Apple? Abso-freakin'-lutely. Palm whipped out it's corporate balls and slapped 'em down on Steve Job's conference table and said "I'm putting these here, and there isn't a damn thing you can do about it". And THEY'RE RIGHT.
Maybe they'll sue Palm and get the rights to BeOS (Palm owns the intellectual rights to BeOS since they went under), the other OS they were considering before Next (which was superior in almost every way with the lone exception of Jobs coming with Next), so that they can integrate some of the very excellent BeOS features into OS X.
well let's actually talk about the REST of the update for a minute:
Changed sound for notifications - a much richer sounding notification.
Animated Drop Down Menus.
Photo App Improvements.
Emailing Memos.
New Browser Font.
Javascript intrepreter performance upgrades.
IM smileys.
more auto complete words in the dictionary.
and itunes support.
some of the homebrew apps available are going to have to be upgraded/reinstalled, but hey, that's part of the fun right?
Well, looks like you get more text space per bubble. don't know if it was said already, but just noticed that this morning. one of my normal sized texts usually take up 2 bubbles but today it was 1. didnt bother counting the characters though.
Gosh darn it! Why haven't they added an "Empty Trash" function for the Trash Folder? Do none of Palm's engineers use a traditional POP/SMTP email account??? It is getting to be very frustrating having to manually empty hundreds of mail messages from the trash folder. I forgave them with the initial release but this should have been fixed by now.
Wake up Palm - I'm getting close to switching (back) to the iPhone
Attn: WebOS engineers:
1. The ability to empty the trash folder (mail) in a single click should have been added in the 1.1. Rule: The more time you force a user to take to do basic housekeeping the more likely they'll move to a device which *saves* them that time.
2. Don't automatically install apps which aren't foundational to the OS. Hint: The world doesn't revolve around NASCAR or NFL. At least allow us to delete these apps.
3. The webkit browser doesn't yet auto-save form data. It is getting increasingly aggravating having to re-login to FaceBook (or any other webpage) each time. See point in #1 above about saving the user time.
#1 & #3 are basic features, which if not included in the 1.0 should have been easily and quickly added in the 1.1. For these reasons, Palm get's an F on this latest update. And they get a D for #2. Why wasn't the app just added to the app store; users could have CHOSEN to install it if they wish.
Pre: I want to be like Apple :-)
One thing that we have not considered is illegal behavior on the part of Palm for hiring every Apple developer they could to make the WebOS, and then hacking Apple technologies (rightly or wrongly).
When one works at a company, everything he/she does at said company is property of the company, not said individuals. They have no legal right to take one line of code and use it in a competitors product later on, even if they wrote that line of code themselves. In fact, they don't have the legal right to make use of that code at all, even if it looks more like hacking it than actually using it. This is business 101.
From a business standpoint as well as a moral one, Palm is completely in the wrong on this one. They are showing themselves to be lazy thieves who would rather make a name for themselves on the back of another company's hard work and billions of dollars invested in the iPod/iTunes/iPhone ecosystem than actually make something innovative themselves. In this case Apple is not stopping any competition, Palm is buy refusing to make a competing product.
I'm confirming this email just to say: Paul you're an annoying douche bag.
Nice cat and mouse game. Unfortunately, Palm Pre users will always be the losers since with each iTunes upgrade, the Pre will break. Why doesn't Pre just invent their own music player instead of ripping off someone else's?
