Toshiba's Stainless Style 720p HDTV redefines kitchenware
Oh sure, outfits have claimed to ship kitchen-friendly TV sets before, but Toshiba just made 'em all look silly with the introduction of the 19LV612U. Less formally known as the first member of the Stainless Style TV series, this 18.5-inch set packs a built-in slot-loading DVD player, integrated ATSC / NTSC / QAM TV tuner and a 1,366 x 768 native resolution. Oh, and then there's the seductive stainless steel coating, which makes it fit in impeccably well with your modern day dishwasher, refrigerator and microwave oven. Other specs include 300 nits of brightness, a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, five millisecond response time, HDMI / VGA inputs, a headphone jack and VESA mount support. It's expected to ruin meals regularly starting this September for $349.99

My mom would love one of these!
She should get one because your mom deserves the best.
Don't worry, I already have one on order for her, for all she's done for me.
So your the bastard she finally got into shape and prevented from going to prison in the high school class she teaches.
maybe you should take her class. *you're
Thou with massive ear piercings shall not correct thy grammar.
If by get into shape, you mean we had hot steamy sex: yes. But in all truth, she's the one risking the prison sentence.
yeah, Doesn't she realize that some such as herself who is in a position of authority cannot have sexual relations with the developmentally disabled under her care.
18"? $350?
piece of shit.
It depends, if it's designed to be cleaned rigorously like things in the kitchen need to, then it may be worth it to some. If it just has your typical fragile screen coating and the stainless steel isn't actually stainless steel, nope, not worth it.
They should have integrated a little Atom or Nano based nettop instead of the DVD player, it would be much more useful in a kitchen.
thats what she said.
Well said msalivar, but when it says "Stainless Style(TM) TV" then the word 'style' tells me it's not stainless steel, and I fear the screen is not protected either when they go for such shenanigans as name tricks.
You of course put it somewhere out of the way of dirt/damage or add a piece of lexan or glass in front of it, but if you already pay $350 it would be easier to buy a cheaper model and get some real steel or aluminium too to finish your home project.
You could*.
Lately I keep changing the sentence I have in mind midway and end up forgetting whole words in the final output, I should grab the reigns.
Yeah, that's what I figure. They're just trying to fit into the stainless styling, instead of actually making something useful. But if they did, it would be worth the money.
And only standard DVD. Not even HD-DVD.
18.5 inches is a bit small, is it not?
crap. double post. comment system's a bit outta whack, huh. almost as outta whack as I am.
The "broken" comment system is there to create unnecessary drama. Don't get down on yourself.
That's what she said.
She's always bitching about the comment system you see :P
does anyone really need hdmi in their kitchen?
Does anyone really NEED hdmi?
Yes to both of you!
It is basically DVI port with audio.
More options for inputs the better.
More is better but HDMI means they have to pay a license fee, and they charge you for that.
Still, it's the currently most used connection for such devices so I'd say it's something which is good to have unfortunately, they should also add displayport though as a sign of protest, although, isn't toshiba one of the group that made up HDMI?
Looked it up:
"The HDMI Founders are Hitachi, Matsushita Electric Industrial (Panasonic/National/Quasar), Philips, Silicon Image, Sony, Thomson (RCA), and Toshiba."
Now my wife can watch TV and make me a sandwich.
So says Cartman!
What's the point of stainless steel if it isn't water/liquid proof?
A lot of peoples kitchens are stainless steel. So it was made to blend in.
Yes,
This is purely for design aesthetic.
Now if it only had a touch screen and Atom 330 add on i would be in love..... this would be perfect for our kitchen.
Touch screen + Kitchen? That could go south in a hurry.
It does says it has "PC inputs", but yeah no touch, I'm not sure where engadget got the 'vga' from, perhaps that's what they understand with the term "PC inputs", I would sooner think of DVI myself but since there too toshiba is vague I guess you'll never find out because you won't be buying it anyway.
"Modern day dishwasher, refrigerator..."
You've got to be kidding me. Stainless steel is so turn of the century.
"integrated ATSC / NTSC / QAM TV tuner"
Random question. Why are TVs still shipping with NTSC tuners built in? Is it because they ship the same TV to Canada (who has yet to make the full digital switch)? Is it just because the tuners are built to pick up ATSC, and NTSC gets picked up as a bonus?
Don't hate me for asking. Just curious...
Pretty sure NTSC is the standard used for basic cable still isn't it?
What up now?!
"1,000:1 contrast ratio". Darren, I'd like to thank you for not quoting a dynamic contrast ratio, and instead giving us numbers that actually make sense.
Connectivity is also a plus in the combination units. The sets are complete with both HDMI(TM) and PC inputs allowing the TVs to be used in conjunction with a computer, and support gaming and receiving HD broadcasts.
Support gaming??? What, so you can play "Cooking Mama" while you're really cooking?
Keeps the kids near but busy when mom's in the kitchen?
I was looking at one of these and saw this particular model at Costco the other day. The picture quality is OK. You're never going to get really good picture quality in these TV's with the integrated DVD players.
But instead, I bought a 24" screen-tilting 1080p Vizio LCD HDTV (with HDMI) and an upscaling Toshiba DVD player (also with HDMI and an included cable) together for $300 at Costco just the other day - bigger screen, higher resolution, MUCH better picture, and a better price. Just a smarter way to go.
Looks ok, but we are missing the vital in-habitat pictures. After all, that's the whole point of this thing, to look good in a trendy homes magazine setting. Let's see that SS bezel in all it's full glory in the kitchen...
Can someone get a DVD of a chicken roasting in a oven. That way when wife comes in, you can flick over and tell her your cooking her dinner. GENIUS.
Stainless steel TVs have been on the market for years.
