AMD parties hard after shipping 500 millionth x86 processor
Get on down with your bad self, Mr. Spaceman -- AMD just shipped its 500 millionth x86 processor! Shortly after the company celebrated 40 years of hanging tough and doing its best to overtake Intel, the outfit has now revealed that a half billion x86 CPUs have left its facilities over the past two score. We pinged Intel in order to find out just how that number stacked up, but all we were told is that the 500 million milestone was celebrated awhile back down in Santa Clara. We'll just chalk the vagueness up to Intel not wanting to spoil an otherwise raucous Silicon Valley shindig. Classy.

Go AMD!
I like intel better, it just runs smoother.
i like AMD better. just costs less and runs the same.
This can turn into a nasty flame war.
However, I admit I also prefer Intel over AMD. Don't know why. They are more expensive and had their downs and falls in comparison to AMD in the past. But still, I've never seen steadier chips than those made by Intel. Not me personally, but companies I've worked with etc... all using AMD and Intel shared the same opinion that Intel is better.
Of course it'll all come down to what you need, want and expect from a CPU. I need reliable, fast and not so energy hungry and too hot CPUs for 24/7 usage. Maybe I would have been as satisfied with AMD as I am with Intel, I'll never know... :)
It's a processor, not a internal combustion engine. If you are concious of any lack of smoothness whatsoever emanating from your cpu it is probably a bad sign.
I think Intel is a pretty cool guy, eh bribes businesses and doesn't afraid of anything.
And eh also calls fines a human right violation.
AMD has great technology, they have just been crushed by the enormous R&D power of Intel who has an order of magnitude more capital, facilities, and engineers.
They have really fallen behind on the mobile front -- they do not even have mobile, dual-core K10 CPUs despite having very low power server chips. Hopefully they have a new mobile series coming out soon, because Arrandale (and Clarksfield) are going to destroy their current CPUs in performance, performance/watt, etc. Arrandale is not only 32nm, but can dynamically shutdown cores, and dynamically scale the active cores performance. All of this, with an IMC and integrated PCIe controller. All of the bottle-necks of the Core 2 days are gone, and the powerful cores can finally show off what they have.
I am really rooting for AMD, but holy crap do they have to really step it up.
I like your mom better, she just runs smoother...
Screw intel and their anti-trust misdeeds.
AMD FTW!!!
I want that spaceman!
CPUs should come with a free toy.
Like Happy Meals.
Intel core2duo 2.0ghz. £499. Now with free mac mini!
Is it just me or does that spaceman look a lot like the men in clean suits used by Intel in their Pentium II MMX commercials way back in 98? Well, besides the color, that is.
i was thinking the exact same thing.
It is exactly as you think. A local game shop has one of those spacemen dolls sitting on a Wii Fit box on the counter, and looks a lot like the doll in the photo...except, the photo doll has the AMD tag instead of the intel tag.
That's because it is from the Pentium 2 commercials. I have the whole collection of the little guys at home, but the green one is at work with me now. http://s10.photobucket.com/albums/a111/biofishfreak/?action=view¤t=P2BunnySuit.jpg
if only that space man was a heatsink.. hmm..
as i read this i pictured your avatar thinking hard about it. it was amusing
as did I. I luld.
yes, the thought of a spaceman heatsink got me a little bit too exited..
Especially a YOUNG space man.
Go AMD! This beer is for you. Even though you're not on top, you always hold a special place in my heart since the days of the Thunderbird and Duron.
Ahhhh yes MR.Spaceman does look familiar!

Point proven...AMD is the same as Intel only a cheaper knock off version hahaha!
like frickin' sharks with frickin' GREEN AMD laser beams attached to their frickin' heads!
Was thinking the same thing. Surprised no one remembers the commercials from back in the day, must be all high school kids here then. My older cousin who used to work in IT gave me three of those Intel spacemen wayyyy back, I still got them in my room :)
And if your quick theres a GREEN Intel spaceman (as above) on ebay for $3!

Go AMD! Now send me a TWKR so I can have some over clocking fun!
1 Score = 20 Years
2 score = 40 years.
4 scores = awesome night at the club
I've been an AMD fan since I started building computers. I won't say that they're better than Intel or vice versa, they've each had processors that were better than the other, but I prefer to get equal perfomance for less money. The ones that I've had have all been very stable and I leave my computers on 24/7.
AMD congrats
Good news for AMD!
They should make the Green Space Man their mascot and start fricking advertising their wares. Seriously, AMD marketing is atrocious.
The Green Spaceman is a knock off Intel Spaceman from Pentium II days. It's what AMD is good at ;)

Hope they bargain shopped for their supplies.
Looks like Intel shipped it's BILLIONTH processor back in June of 2003.
