Early Android 2.0 "Donut" build available, up and running on G1

Perhaps more excitingly, the community is hard at work on a couple major fronts here: first off, the Donut build is actively being ported to current handsets, and an Android Dev Phone 1 / T-Mobile G1 version is already available (though very, very crashy and incomplete right now). Secondly, work is being conducted to extract major elements of Donut (some of the new widgets, for example) and roll them into cooked 1.5 builds, making the best stuff available in a more solid, accessible form without having to wait for 2.0 to become stable. If you're an adventurous -- nay, borderline mental -- G1 owner, though, you can start your journey to Donut right now.

mmmmmmm...donut
DOH!. That is the first thing I thought of before hitting comments link. I didn't actually think it would be first post.
Android upgrade articles always make me hungry. :(
Simpsons suck, after it went all political/liberal it was like watching an abortion, stick to Family Guy, South Park, FrIsky Dingo and futureRama
I haven't watched it in about 10 years, but seasons 2-8 were still brilliant.
murmermer, don't be hurt, the simpsons always were left-leaning. All smart people are. Only fat ugly white men and undereducated blue-collar slobs are republicans.
"Donuts. Is there anything they can't do?" - Homer Simpson
Thanks Cyanogen (they guy behind all this great hope)!
The Donut G1 port right now is very unstable and early, it has no optimizations and basic things like wireless don't work. But we will figure it out.
All this great work
Hope? Guess I shouldn't be commenting at 2:00 AM.
If doughnut = awesome and andorid = doughnut....
hmm, I see what they did there.
It's Donut, not Doughnut.
It's the name of this build, not a name of a kind of pastry that has different spellings.
Podcast?
What's with the yummy names? Cupcake, donut, etc. I don't understand...
I'm actually being serious.
What's NOT with the names?
It just makes it easier and more mainstream friendly.
It just like what apple does with OSX, tiger, leopard, etc.
It's a lot easier to know you have the "donut" version then to know you have the 2.2.1 version. Right?
Google is very casual with all there stuff they try and make it look cool.... Just look at Google Chrome, if you look at the task manager it gives you information about what is going on in a simple way then below it says something like "Stats for Nerds" after clicking it you get a more in depth look at what is going on...
Good strategy and they should do it especially when its free.
The version of android the G1 shipped with was build 'B', the latest build is Cupcake (C), next will be Donut (D) followed by Eclair and Flan.
It seems like Android got multi-touch support built in now.
Should lay to rest all those rumors of Google disabling the feature due to possible patent infringement. Either that, or they got cheesed off over Latitude being blocked from Apple's App store. :-)
Ouch! Precious comment there.
I thought the exact same thing.
The bummer is that I returned my HTC Magic 4 weeks ago after I find Vodafone reducing its memory and thus, making it really slow playing games and using (heck!) everything. I was going to get the Hero, but now with SE and the others launching new Androids, I dont really know when to/what to buy. And Donut makes things worst (in a very, oh-so-delicious way).
I miss playing Buka and multitouch is making it harder...
This is really a great news on how actively Google is dedicating their dev time on perfecting Android. Most of all, my G1 will get another update soon! Two thumbs up on all developers are making the platform better by the day.
I like some of these features but I am too busy playing with the 2.73 JacHero ... hopefully some of donut is cooked into 2.8 8-)
Awesome!
When you guys make these Donut posts, you should really mention that the development is by and large being done by the godjesusman known as Cyanogen. When someone works as hard as that dude does, I think it'd be nice if you published his name once in a while
Gizmodo mentioned him... ups.
No. Development is almost completely being done by Google developers. Cyanogen is porting it to dream hardware. Big difference. Not saying that he doesn't work hard. He does good stuff. But I'm guessing the Google devs have been working harder.
Eclair and Flan are up next! The oven better get ready!
Yeah you really should credit cyanogen with this..........
or if you just so happen to have a spare G1 that you use specifically for this kinda stuff :)..................
I'll wait for the cheesecake
omg this is awesome. I
hate the commenting system!
anyways, I will flash this to my G1 as soon as it becomes stable. I
hate the commenting system!
anyways, I love my g1 to death, and will flash donut as soon as it becomes stable.
Long live xda!
:/
i cant sleep, so im here checking engadget :)
This will be good. I hope there is support (native app) for editing goog docs in the near future.
Does android have a start-up audio? Can the audio file be personally customized like Winmo?
There's an Ap for that...
Oh god. a CDMA Android phone? I want it willingly, HTC. Bring it.
also hoping for a decent google doc app.
can't wait for creme brulee
Hmmm..... That's a nice'a Doughnut!
Anyone else think the UI is lacking? that or im getting too used to palm/apple
Am I the only one who likes the vanilla Android UI? I have a theme thrown on mine but its the same basic stuff and I like it the way it is. The window animations are good too, and the Hero UI is just as good if not better.
I agree with B3astofthe3ast Vanilla Android is miles ahead of Palm or Iphone. I have no theme although i really like dark hero and Prodigal_SUn but the UI is great. I also think the Sense UI is worthless Open Home is better then Sense.
Yeah, totally agree with you. Google better step it up if they want their fair share of the market. Even Blackberry's have a better look imo. It's all about shiny black these days!
I think they realize that most handset manufacturers will skin the hell out of the user interface anyway. So, it's probably not a priority.
The main problem with Android so far is that HTC hasn't been using hardware graphics acceleration!! Why, I have no idea? Possibly because they didn't want to pay for the qualcomm drivers? While the software rendering on the G1/G2 is quick, this is unacceptable for 2009, particularly with the 3GS and Palm Pre in competition.
i really LIKE the android look. it's simple and sophisticated. you can change the icons with open home and better cut if you want.
personally i'm sick of everything looking like it's been buffed with turtle wax... not everything needs to gleam and shine.
the current GUI is one of the main reasons i like the G1.
Google is really updating Android quickly. I hope that within the next year or two Android really improves and more powerful Android phones come out (as much as I love HTC and Sense they have a habit of gimping phones with slow CPUs and crappy graphics) for either Sprint or Verizon.
If that happens and if ATT hasn't signficantly improved their network (or if the new iPhone doesn't really blow me away) I am switching.
Android needs to pick up the pace, thats why they are moving quickly. When Apple came out with the Iphone, it was a complete game changer. Like them or not, their first entry into the wireless side was incredible. To see how much market share they have after two short years is incredible. Hopefully in the next year or so, Android will be competitive. They cannot fall to far behind in the rat race.
CDMA settings? HOLY CRAP! Maybe now the Raphael builds will have voice and data!
