Verizon reiterates it'll have the Pre -- early next year
It's no secret that Verizon wants the Pre; in fact, as much as we're sure they'd like to be showing a corporate poker face, it's pretty obvious they want it badly given how swiftly it sought to take the wind out of Sprint's sails with comments around the time of the initial launch. Sprint's Dan Hesse moved just as quickly to quash the thought as best he could by publicly slamming his company's archrival, telling media that Verizon needed to cut it out with the assumptions that Sprint's exclusivity period was six months and reiterating that he'd have the Pre in his back pocket through the end of 2009. The obvious response from Verizon? Revise your language just a little bit and keep at it. Big Red is now saying that it'll have the Pre "early next year" in comments made during its earnings call today -- in other words, the very moment Sprint's exclusivity ends if Verizon has anything to say about it. From Palm's perspective, sitting pretty atop the States' largest carrier is a good place to be, so we're sure they're stoked to hear the depth of Verizon's interest -- not to mention that we've still got that Eos floating around somewhere.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
errr... You all suck sucks.
I even if I were to get this, I would not limit myself to a CDMA network. Once this thing goes GSM, doors will start to open. Regardless, once the iPhone loses exclusivity, the only feasible choice is a CDMA network. Kinda backasswards?
What does it matter though? Aren't prices better on Sprint? And you get free roaming so you can be on Verizon's network anyway.
Seems to me that V would have to add more features to take away the advantages Sprint has. Like visual voicemail.
@ "U_All_Suck"
So then where will the iPhone stand? (not a fanboy of anything, however im a fan of tegra....XD)
"I got sloppy seconds!"
Totally a feather in Palm's cap to have the year's most talked-about new handset, AND to have the biggest carrier in the US fawning all over you.
Does sorta make me wonder to what extent Verizon will be hurt by having:
No Pre
No Android
No iPhone
Come to think of it, that's probably why they're talking up the Pre -- they don't want their shareholders getting too agitated.
I lol'd at the image. So true.
That horrid red GUI claims another victim
No joke, I nearly puked when I saw it there. Terrible - it makes every phone look like shºt.
Agreed. The red look on every phone is disgusting.
I don't know about you, but I found the picture of the article hilarious...
Personally, I don't think the red theme looks bad on the BlackBerry Storm... the version on standard dumbphones is horrifying, but there's no way that'd be going to the Pre.
"Get It Now" is bobo...
When I used to work for VZW in 2004, they hadn't forced the manufacturers into their unified interface, so it was still pretty cool. Now they take all the joy and choice out of choosing a phone. My father, the original geek who first taught me how to build a computer, who bought a cellphone in 1993, just bought a brand new LG EnV. Angels wept, and I was both saddened and ashamed my father had been seduced by the slick-looking dumbphone, glowing red in it's ugliness and locked-down features.
well guess what the best buy price of 99 dollars u posted was a mistake made nation wide check the article about it on yahoo.
If the pre comes to verizon UNTAMPERED I'll definitely be picking it up. However, if verizon decides to bog it down with their own proprietary apps, stores, and UI, then I won't touch it.
Hopefully homebrews and developers will allow Verizon Pre user to completely control the phone.
Oh, and Verizon better not sell an under powered version like they have done for other smartphones.
they will totally cut the original pre UI, as well as remove the pre app store and make it nearly impossible to get.
@ CaramelZappa
Couldn't have said it better myself!
I am right there with you Caramel. If Verizon screws with the GUI, I am jumping ship to ATT or Sprint. I am so sick of Verizons proprietary software and hardware gimping.
verizon always wants the crummy phones.
crummy phones always want verizon...
You see what I did there?
you always want verizons crummy phones
see what i did there ..lol
I do not live in the USA, but I too have heard terrible things about the way Verizon abuses it's mobile phones.
that's the problem, you have only heard, and you have probably on heard from other people who have only heard. honestly, i don't think verizon does any more or any less to their dumb-phones than any other carrier does to theirs. again, that's for their dumb-phones. if looking to buy a new smart-phone from VZ, you're safe.
T-mobile really doesn't touch any of its phones save for the sidekick...
First, Verizon cripples their phones when compared to AT&T and Sprint, and T-Mobile is even worse with their branded dumbphones.
Oh yeah iRoq,
Please explain then, why in the hell did Verizon decide to release their version of the HTC Touch Pro with ONLY 192 MB of RAM (versus the 288 MB of RAM every other carrier provides on the phone), effectively rendering the phone useless for heavy multi-tasking or flashing custom ROMs on them with page pools larger than the default one?
You would think they (Verizon) would have learned their lesson when customers numbering in the tens of thousands complained about RAM limitations the web over, but then they went on to release the Touch Diamond (late mind you) with its RAM also crippled by the same amount.
Of course if you go further back, you will find that Verizon has this proclivity for crippling phones on their network just to save a few bucks here or there, all at the expense of their customers enjoyment of their new (and often late) devices.
It shows how inefficient WinMo 6.1 is that ONE HUNDRED AND NINETY TWO MEGABYTES of RAM is considered inadequate. I run WINDOWS XP on 256MB (used to be 128), and even Windows 7 is slightly usable on that PC.
Anyway, Verizon still sucks.
I've seen a few of those sad crippled phones too. People who visit the USA get them for cheap and go out of the country and unlock them (also getting the original unraped UI back in the process).
10minutehobo,
Um no.
Note, I said "Heavy Multitasking", not just multitasking.
Sure you can still fire up a solid half a dozen or so apps such as GPS navigation, Notepad, Excel, Youtube player, and browser -- which is an impressive enough feat as it is (considering that phones such as the iPhone won't even allow you to run any of the above 2 in tandem), but the problem stems from the fact that you then will run into sluggish performance when say trying to browse through your media playlist or open up multiple tabs in opera mobile, and often times run intensive games in the background (3d shooters such as COD2) without closing out the other apps.
With 288 MB (or more) that all becomes a non-issue.
With 192 MB and less (as Verizon often incorporates into its WinMo phones), the issues begin to manifest themselves and then people bitch and moan about WinMo rather than the carrier that cripples it.
Also allow me to reiterate, the iPhone can't even multitask with 128MB...
iPhone? Where does the iPhone come in here? Screw the iPhone! It uses all its resources for silly animations.
You're right, I guess. I haven't really used WinMo since 5.x, but it still seems like an awful lot of memory for a mobile OS.
WinMo7 ftw!
that's picture brings horrible misconceptions. that's the UI that they slap onto all of their dumb-phones, just like every other carrier does to their dumb-phones. not a single smart-phone on verizon has that UI, they use their own native UI. get your sh!t together, engadget, you're bias is showing!
The picture is meant to be humorous, not misleading. Chill.
"just like every other carrier does to their dumb-phones"
I cannot think of a SINGLE phone on another carrier that was a custom horrid UI, no Operating System, on their dumb phones.
If you compare Sprint's, T-mobile's and AT&T's RAZR software it all look the same. Verizon is the only one with the ugly, laggy and red interface.
Oh yeah iRoq,

NO OTHER CARRIER IN AMERICA messes with their phone's UI so horribly. My cousin has Moto v3m, and it's painful to see what's been taken away compared to the original version released in Korea and China (apart from putting "clear" next to the d-pad rather than below it like on the Chinese version- dumb, dumb, dumb). Oh, and it's ugly with no option to get rid of it.
Palm may be dead by next year so it may be irrelevant, IMO.
then again, you, too, might be dead next year. does that make your comment about this being irrelevant irrelavent?
Why asked about irrelevant if you insist on irrelevant? The difference is Palm is bleeding whereas I'm sitting comfortably in my chair reading Engadget. You see my point?
i see your point. but anything could happen in a year...see my point?
Sure, you might live to 200 years if medical technology improves and you might even win lottery tomorrow. My point is
your comments are highly irrelevant whereas my comments are highly relevant!
hey. shut up.
yeah, i'm done with dunkin. his last post really says a lot.
your sentences RUNS ON DUNKN
Forget the Pre, release the HTC touch pro 2 with new 3.5 mm jack technologies FTW!
you guys got this story but where's the story on Pre's going on sale for $99 @ BB was a fluke and the pricing will be going up?
Fail. They already updated the post to say this...
I seriously hope Verizon doesn't cripple the Pre. Obviously it won't have that "Get It Now" UI used on dumbphones, but I hope they don't disable/limit GPS or other crap like that.
I'll be more interested in seeing the next webOS phone. The Pre will be way outdated by the time some other carrier gets it.
Im interested in seeing the next webOS phone too but the Pre will not be "outdated" any time soon. It has a certain style about it, so there will be a demand for it so that will keep it relevant for a while. If Verizon gets it Im in!
fangirl.
who gives a shit about verizon just flash one from sprint ...i want a gsm version (unlocked)
Thats actually a pretty good Photoshop. Good job Engadget!
SRSLY?
you're easily impressed, the edges on that "VZ app" in the forefront aren't even rounded like the rest of the apps. not to mention the phone shows two different battery life and signal meters...
lawl. I actually didn't notice either of those things. Now that you mention them, its definitely looking a lot less awesome...
Dont be critical of this guy. I wouldnt put it past Verizon to do that actually...
Correction: Botched photoshop job screenshot from a moto flip phone pasted and layered with a red mask
Anyway perhaps a new device will be dropped next year as well?
How can something be a good photoshop when it's clearly a bad MS Paint job?
oh silly exclusivity... can't we just get it now?
Big duh, Sprint's exclusivity is only 6 months, right? This is hardly a surprise at all.
The bigger issue is, how would Palm deal with the variety of Android phones coming on the market, on various providers?
not crapgadget
So Verizon is red with envy. Nice touch!
Waiting for this to happen is for n00bs.
I already got mine working with data and voice on verizon. lol.
And you either signed a contract with Sprint or payed $700 for a cellphone.
Sounds genius, no?
Down with Verizon.
ah shit!!!! the palm pre is now ruined.
wow this is funny to see all the people that are in denial about how Verizon completely dumbs down all their phones, including their smartphones
ok, i'm an owner of the new blackberry tour, nothing on this phone is dumbed down. i can download and use any 3rd party app from the bb app store that is available for the tour, including GPS apps, internet radio, it comes with its own bb browser (which is decent but have the option of installing bolt or opera mini or any other browser of your liking), bb maps (which i think is rubbish compared to google maps), free visual voicemail apps. etc...
now you tell me in what way, is the tour dumbed down? specifics, please.
Where's your wifi? That is one of the things Verizon dumbed down on the phone.
somehow i knew you would bring that up. but get this, neither the verizon tour or sprint tour have wifi...so that argument is not valid. next.
haha what do you mean that argument is not valid just because Sprint also didn't incorporate it? AT&T's BB's have WiFi, T-Mo's BB's have wifi. There's your argument
what i'm saying is that it isn't a verizon thing, that is a tour thing. no tour has wifi, not verizon's, not sprint's, not bell's, not tellus'...NONE. therefore, verizon did not dumb down the phone. get your shit straight before you sound any dumber.
Just you wait- it'll magically have WiFi when they make a pure GSM version.
Verizon's running its mouth to grab Sprints thunder just like a spoiled brat child. It would be absolutely hilarious if Dan Hesse signs an extended 6 months exclusivity with Palm. Also, if Verizon insists on its bloatware perpetrating the Pre and Verizon's app store replacing Palms app store....Palm will take the same stance as Apple did and Verizon will be shut out.
Another lemon of a phone for Verizon. It's amazing Verizon can stay in business with it's legion of crappy phones.. To each their own I guess...
I can understand why Palm might not want to approach AT&T to pick up the Pre, but would it really cost them that much to go to T-Mobile and get both its US and European networks to pick up GSM versions of the Pre? That would allow them to hit a major market (Europe) while expanding their presence in the US. That said, It makes sense to go to another CDMA network first (especially the biggest in the country)...I can see them releasing sales figures after a few months with Verizon...that is probably the only way they'll hit 1m sales.
I'll give it a week on the big V before it gets fully ported to Cricket / Metro / your choice regional ACG member.
It does not matter how many times Verizon reiterates, they are again blowing smoke. Another bone head executive just throwing anything out there. Verizon is NOT getting the Pre! How is that iphone (which was supposed to land on Verizon) doing Verizon?!? A Palm rep was at my business going over the Palm devices, she was asked which other American carriers were getting the Pre, on her laptop she had a list of who is getting the Pre and approximately when, Verizon was NOT on that list. Sprint America, Bell Canada, Europe, Australia, there was no mention of Verizon. She said Verizon has not even began testing the Pre.
Forgot to mention, Hesse is correct about the, "I can tell you it's not six months" comment. Sprint has the option to extend the contract as well.
Isn't the Pre going to be a bit outdated by the time Verizon actually gets around to releasing it? Sort of like the HTC Diamond and Touch Pro? And the original Touch, actually. I love getting service everywhere, but I find myself hating Verizon more and more every day.
If verizon gets the pre and that is if they get it by the time they launch the device sprint will be getting to launch the pre 2. Sprint gets first choice for palm since they were the only ones releasing phones for palm when they were hurting, now palm has something hot and vzw and att want it? Same thing with the iphone vzw turn it down and they sure want it now
The current pre will be old news in 2010.
The next generation pre is where the money is.
If Sprint keeps the 2010 model for itself, then they don't have to worry about Verizon.
It all depends on the Sprint-Palm deal.
Wonder if Verizon, in its normal control-freak ways, will still let the Pre keep its WiFi? Or will it be there and locked to only Verizon hotspots or some such ridiculous restriction?
I love my Pre on Sprint and can't wait to see how Verizon will manage to cripple the shit out of it.
oh god, that get it now screen brings bad memories of horrible UI rushing back
what i'm saying is that it isn't a verizon thing, that is a tour thing. no tour has wifi, not verizon's, not sprint's, not bell's, not tellus'...NONE. therefore, verizon did not dumb down the phone. get your shit straight before you sound any dumber.

Wow FINALLY verizon has a good phone as long as they don't cripple it!
It's funny. Everything about Verizon sucks except their network. It's like I want to hate them, but then I drop my thousandth call on AT&T and think, maybe Verizon's rape of phone UI and features isn't that bad...
It has to be at least as good as the alternative with AT&T. They have excellent everything except pricing and network. I mean seriously, their network sucks so bad that it has ceased to funny, and ceased to be sad. It is beyond that now, it just pisses me off.
But on topic, Verizon really doesn't want Sprint to have any positive news. I'd like to see the numbers Sprint has since the Pre has launched and they've really started to pimp their Simply Everything plan. I think Sprint has the right idea with pricing, and I am really considering switching to them as soon as my contract runs out.
Hilarious picture!
your palm are belong to us
FUCK A CDMA PRE...GET THIS PHONE ON A GSM NETWORK....that's if you actually want to SELL THE BITCH!
How about a iPhone on a Sprint Network!
That's end of the world stuff man.
I am currently on contract with Verizon with the HTC Touch Pro. Every other version of my phone (Named Raphael by HTC) on all the other carriers is noticeably faster at doing simple tasks like minimizing or closing a screen or sending a text message. For petes sakes it even has keyboard lag like an old C64 when I'm typing so fast it doesn't fill the text in for another agonizing 5 seconds. The reason behind this being that Verizon removed half of the operating memory when they slapped their little v-shaped brand on the front of my phone.
I think that if Verizon wants this phone, they should not subsidize the crap out of it like they do all their other phones. The world's largest carrier is also the world's largest phone killer. For the good of their company, they need to stop this money-saving nonsense and take a look at what the customers want. First they're gonna whack the Pre, next the iPhone, they've got a hit list for all the big ones. I honestly have no vendetta with Verizon, nor am I playing devil's advocate. I am just a customer that has come to realize that this is a phone company that has become too big for it's britches, and is beginning to stop fulfilling it's customer's needs. I will hopefully be switching to Sprint within the next few months, and purchasing a Pre. I do not want to wait for it to come to Verizon just to be disappointed. Contract cancellation fees be damned.
Does anyone else find this mockup hilarious? Not that plastering trashy NASCAR all over my phone makes me love Sprint, but the tinged Red and akin Motorola RAZR "Get it Now" just leaves me giggling. Well done, Engadget.
not that stinking VZW logo on beautiful Palm.
Is anyone else less than enchanted about the prospect of a horribly crippled Pre?
hahaha palm pre ruined, maybe that is what vzw will call it. or may people will just call it crap once it gets locked down and crippled on verizon.
