Perhaps the big G spoke too soon when it said its new
Google Voice service was coming to iPhone. First, GV Mobile developer Sean Kovacs relays a phone call he had with Apple where he was notified of his app being removed from the iTunes store for duplicating built-in iPhone features -- an app that was originally and purportedly approved by Phil Schiller himself. Next out the door was GVdialer, and if you thought that was all bad, now comes word that Google's official Voice app was flat-out rejected by Cupertino. Now it's hard to say with certainty who's to blame for these app rejections, but a good many fingers are pointing to the cellular carriers -- and given
AT&T's previous statements about the SlingPlayer app, it's hard to argue with that. For its part, the company hinted at finding a workaround via web apps, much like they did when Apple gave
Latitude a cold shoulder -- but doesn't that
feel just a little 2007?

Google should just buy a small wireless carrier and build their own wireless company.
maybe now Google will make the WM and Android versions. I think its about time they gave apple the boot for being so controlling.
There's already a Google Voice application for Android. It even takes over the built-in dialer app so it's more transparent to the user.
Wish they had a Gvoice dialer for S60. I love my corporate SIM carded (unlimited data) 5800XM. I tether Hulu too and from work an hour each day. I just got accepted into GV, but am having a hard time getting it integrated into my lifestyle, a phone app would be perfect!
Dear Apple,
I was so happy when you blocked the Google Voice Application! I just got Google voice last week. On August 9th I'm planning on paying $180 to terminate my Verizon contract and get a new iPhone/AT&T Contract!
It would have been terrible for AT&T to have to raise the price on a data plan because Google voice allows free SMS. I don't *do* texting. Thankfully you blocked this evil application that would cause my cell phone bill to go up.
I was almost as relieved as when you blocked the tethering applications. It would be god awful to let my iPhone be a wifi hotspot for my laptop when I could enjoy the free wifi of my local Starbucks instead!
At least AT&T doesn't charge for bandwidth instead of a monthly fee. I use Pandora like 24/7 and I would hate to be charged for the amount of data I'll be pulling off the network! Not to mention my addiction with Youtube (and Redtube)!
I breath a sigh of relief and look forward to moving to AT&T as planned. I wish those Verizon people weren't so greedy though.
Why dont Google remove (rejects the iPhone) maps support on iPhone as well? We'll see how long it takes then to Apple aprove this app.
I don't get what the "lose connection" part means. Does that mean since I already have/own GV Voice, that iTunes will disable it?
If Google really wanted to piss off Apple they would just make all these apps available via Cydia.
*Ooops, just noticed other people have already suggested the same thing.
gJailbreak (beta) "GuhJailbreak." XD
This is the number one reason why there is still hope for Windows Mobile. Now im all about the Iphone, however you can still in house create essentially whatever you want and get it onto Windows Mobile. Apple needs to loosen their grip a little bit and realize that they need to become 1. Non carrier specific 2. Give creative developers the chance to get their stuff out there regardless of what it does.
Apple kills the creativity of like minded developers who dont want to code inside a box without walls. Break those walls down.
GV Mobile is now on Cydia
lol who knew google would begin ascent to power so boldly :3
I have an Iphone and now i can say with full certainty, I am seriously thinking of dumping the Apple Iphone, I love their products, My company is running mostly on Apple products like Xserve for our server needs and Macbook pro's for the Portal services. If Apple does not change it's way of doing business or drop AT&T I am putting in my petition to move the company's service to Verizon or Tmobile. Spending thousands of dollars for a stupid At&t Premier service that offer worse service than the regular is not worth anything.
Thanks Apple for justifying my G1 purchase..
This is AT&T don't let anyone be fooled. I am sick and tired of their anti-competitive practices. I think I am going to go in, pay the ETF and go across te lot and get a Blackberry with Verizon. Kiss my butt AT&T!!!
I'm so ready to jump ship. I pay too much over a 2 year period to have all the good apps rejected.
*Waits for GSM Pre or Sony Android phone*
This is too bad, why they would accept it in the first place and just reject it all of a sudden. Why Apple suddenly realized that GV has a similar application in iPhone. Oh, well I guess that what you call business strategy but, instead of gaining more I hope they realize that they will lose more by doing this kinds of stuff.

iPhone Cool POPPER! App: http://aclevertwist.com/iphone-apps/app/popper
Anyone who considers the mobile apps environment to be in its infancy hasn't been around long enough. The mobile apps industry is pretty mature and has been for years now with WinMo, Java and Symbian apps available in the thousands. Certainly mature enough that most of the "junk" apps that sprang up during the late 90's and early 2000's have essentially dwindled so that proper apps are more readily downloaded and actually used.
Just look at the symbian apps market. From a market that was diluged with barely usable freeware, it's now much more tightly focussed with proper developers surviving that initial birth selling their products as well as proper freeware and shareware. Remember there were programs similar to ifart during Palm PDA/ early symbian days as well.
You can *still* get junk apps today but you'd have to really be looking for it. Doing a google for "symbian apps" gives you lists of useful/must-have freeware as well as legit apps portals; and many of the apps ARE rather more expensive simply because it reflects the maturity of that software market/environment as well as the maturity of the actual sotware and feature sets.
Specifically WinMo and Symbian are well ahead of "infancy" stage for mobile apps.
Watch carefully over the next few years where the iPhone apps heads to. You'll see a similar pattern that WinMo and Symbian went through where 90% junk or useless apps get released and they slowly die out to be replaced by a smaller pool of legitimate apps that people actually use for entertainment, news, communications and productivity. The news that most of the downloaded iPhone apps ends up being unused or low-used isn't a surprising one. this follows exactly the same process both winMo and Symbian apps market did.
Some of the more producitivity based apps on the iPhone now are direct successes from the palm pda/winMo/symbian apps environment. They aren't new players. It may seem that way in the NA market but welcome to the rest of the world. It's ironic that it was the USA which was one of the instrumental forces behind mobile apps, yet we fell behind so far that a resurgence in our market can be seen as infancy.
I don't get it, calls on your cell phone still cost you $, as the app calls your cellphone back.
SMS for free is nice but not MMS
what is the benefit?
Wtf mac rock window droops and wtf this google crap who needs it anyway
I made a wish.

You guys that got the app better enjoy it until the next firmware update comes out and the app doesn't work anymore.
Google Voice will revolutionize a new trend in telephone system, too bad it can be AT&T who pressured Apple to reject GV. Anyway, I think GV will find it's way to iPhone via web interface. I just hope AT&T will not make a move to block it again.

Want to learn iTunes SEO?

I think this points to the future of mobile... there are so many challenges with the current app store model. Many lessons to be learned: http://bit.ly/yTes5
@Zak. Apple uses Intel processors on their Macs. Apple uses Samsung processors on their Iphone. So they DO NOT make their own hardware. Microsoft sells Microsoft branded mices, this doesn't mean that Bill Gates manufactures mices in his house.
I've been running this on my G1 for about two weeks now and absolutely love it! My girlfriend calls and it ring my home, office and cell, but if my mother calls and it goes direct to VM and with text transcription I don't even have to listen...amazing! The integration with android is so completely seamless I don't even notice it. My only irritation is that I get over alerted which I could fix if I chose to not receive some of the alerts (each message posts to my phone's std. SMS, Gmail account, and Google voice account). Overall, I have to say that the app makes the service...without the app, the service is much less useful. Hopefully Apple will hook you guys up sooner than later.
You know, its really sad that Apple rejects all these useful apps, while they allow all those messed up apps. (You Know What I'm Talking About.)
Yeah it was rejected to save AT&T from losing the chance to rip off their customers. Each text message is 71 bytes times say 200 is 7.1KB which costs $5 presently on AT&T's iphone plan - which no longer includes unlimited texts. This article does all the math, you have to give the guy credit for doing it because this is bs: http://bit.ly/yPCaY
I'm insulted by Apples reply to the FCC, and the fact that they put it on the front page of their site. Obviously they think their customers are dumb, but the wording doesn't fool me. I know what's really going on behind the scenes. AT&T and Apple talked all day in heated conference calls and Apple kept the app in a "State of review" for a long period of time.
I say let Google change voice the way we know it. It's time for some change, there's no good reason (aside from greed) that we're not the #1 technologically advanced nation in the world.
