New Atom architecture Pine Trail on schedule for this year, says Intel's Eden

oh u can quote him on that. i feel btr now
whew. i almost had a heart attack.
Apple already helped them do this with the duo. All of Apple's Intel Duo procs sport GPU processing embedded in the CPU so the graphics system can utilize the same cores and logic environment as the rest of the computer.
what?
@Ambel
Most. Idiotic. Post. EVER.
Yeah,
Look at the MacBook Air. It uses this modified Duo proc.

Sarcasm?
Apple didn't have anything to do, whatsoever, with the developpement of Intel's GMA, or any other integrated graphics for that sake.
yeah. what?
Apple has not done that (to my knowledge anyways).
Ambel: All Apple did was to convince Intel to put their xxx chip in a smaller package so as to fit in the Air. Nothing to do with integrated graphics. Nor with Apple helping Intel.
My mistake. I had misread this several months ago.. :-( All Apple did was remove some com chips from the architecture with a well-engineered logic board.

I'm a different dan by the way. Any word on hdmi/hd playback with this?
Not any better than current Atom netbooks, need a card like the Broadcom Crystal HD for good playback.
It should at least be able to play 720p without any problems. Based on the same PowerVR gfx design that the Cortex A8 and the A8 (ex the OMAP 3 on BeagleBoard) can play 720p without any issues at all. With netbook screens being small that should provide all the performance necessary. Sammys new 1GHz Cortex A8 should be an interesting third party in the Tegra vs Pine Trail vs Cortex A8/Snapdragon/etc...
Moving the Memory controller and the gfx into the same package should provide a very nice performance boost, and power savings like advertised, it always does... remember AMDs Athlons, Intel Core all got big perofrmance boost from moving the Memory Controller to the Chip. This is the platform that is actually going to compete with the Nvda Tegra, so it should provide a boost in bat lifetime and performance. Interesting times ahead :)
@ddd
Pine View is an x86 chip and the Pine Trail platform is for running x86 based operating systems.
It won't be competing with Tegra or any other upcoming ARM based platforms you mention, because they can not run Windows.
Dan, that info is not available.
The integrated graphics could simply be the same GMA950 garbage we've had, or they could be any of the other GMA chips(HD performance varies from piss poor to OK), or they could be something completely different.
Info has been thus far nonexistent.
@good grief
a) Check your facts. What Windows are you talking about? All chips can run Linux, Windows mobile, Android, etc...
b) All 3 chips are targeted for the same segment of smartphones, netbooks. So they compete on the same space. So that's like saying that the PowerPC Macs did not compete with the Intel PCs.
c) All 3 chips will be used mostly to surf the web and eventually playback some files. Some the smae range of functionality is expected to be available on all three platforms.
d) All 3 chips will have OpenGL ES 2.x capable gfx cores and will be able to perform as well or better 3D UI and apps than the iPhone 3GS.
@Jon
Do some research and you will find out that the gfx is a PowerVR SGX Core, that is perfectly capable of doing 720p. The info is out there just search the powerVR website and the Intel embedded website.
@DDd
"the gfx is a PowerVR SGX Core" Link?
I haven't read anything more than vague rumors linking Pineview and PowerVR.
Pinetrail and Moorestown aren't the same thing.
a) Check your facts. Windows is Windows. WinMo is something else completely.
You're either stupid or trolling not to understand that.
On a lighter note, check Apple's market share during the PPC years, I'm not sure you can say they did compete with Intel.
Or, you know, there was that press release stating that the N450 uses GMA500.
*facepalm*
Sorry 'bout that.
Clever way to cut nVidia out of the picture....
yeah. and if intel actually made a decent graphics chip, this wouldn't be an issue. Sadly, however, here we are and there is where they want us to go.
I guess that means Asus and Acer will be releasing new netbooks this year after all...
I wonder if this is in response to Asus/Acer's announcment of no new netbooks till Q1 2010?
seeing that asus and acer are the two biggest manufacturers of netbooks, i wouldn't say that's too far-fetched
er... what?
Sorry, my mistake. I misread some info on what they were doing with the logic board a while back that made it sound like they had combined the two. Sry... :-(
@Ambel
Care to elaborate what's the difference between an "Apple's Intel Duo proc" and a pc Intel Duo ???
inb4troll
probably.
I'm assuming this is going to be worse than the ion system?
ION is awesome for small HTPC enclosures, not so great for netbooks (and useless for UMPCs). It uses a lot of energy and wastes even more with the crazy heat it generates.
Pine Trail on the other hand, in addition to using more powerful CPUs, will have much longer battery life and output much less heat vs the current ATOM+9400 ION platform.
Off topic...
Would bringing the memory controller and GPU onto the CPU die increase GPGPU / OpenCL computation for memory limited scenarios.. For example, if memory serves correctly, X264 encoding.
Forgive the pun :)
I would assume that this platform would not support GPGPU or OpenCL. IMO, I don't see Intel supporting a technology that would diminish the relevance of their mainstay products.
Do you have the source of that comment?
found my answer... it's from Engadget!
