T-Mobile announces HTC Touch Pro2 for August 12 availability
Sure, the Touch Pro2 from HTC is available from a variety of carriers around the world at this point -- but you won't find many (read: none) that are offering it in the US right now, which makes T-Mobile's launch especially notable. As expected, it'll be hitting on August 12, bringing a 3.2 megapixel camera, AWS 3G, GPS, a glorious 3.6-inch WVGA display, WiFi, and that unique Straight Talk tech that should make the phone one of the best speakerphones you've ever used (frequent conference callers, take note). Pricing hasn't been announced, but expect it in the lovely shade pictures above, which is being termed "mocha" (your choice of vocabulary may vary).

I thought the screen on the TP2 was going to be larger.
Looks outrageously thick.
Yeah, I know, that's what she said, whatever.
It's okay... one day we will move beyond highschool level jokes....
HTC = Thick
Now that I think of it, the Hero disproves that theory.
The dash was also pretty thin.
Wow I'm an idiot, I actually used to have a Dash.
*yawn* how about some HERO action here in the states?
I wont be in the states for another year or so :D i made a joke
Thick because it's a man's phone. I dont carry my phone in my suit jacket or shirt pocket. And i dont wear skinny jeans. I have always like beefy phones... and small thin phones are just so cramped to handle for my big hands. This phone just speaks "all business" with the 5 row keyboard and tilt screen. I cant wait WAIT to pull a conference call on this with co-workers and potential clients.
SWEET JESUS!!! IS IT HERE FINALLY!!???
on another note, I hope the sprint version is not so fugly.
Looks nice, but a bit thick.
Still, really thin phones are overrated especially if you're giving up battery life to achieve it. And especially if the battery isn't user removable. That's right, fruit company. Fatten that thing up a bit. A sixteenth of an inch thicker isn't gonna kill sales.
I have actually played withe the phone at the T-Mobile store and its thinner than the Wing and the orignal HTC Touch Pro.
kind of a waste of a launch carrier, if you ask me.
oh well
Oh look guys another carrier potshot! I all depends on where you live and what you want in a phone.
I'd never buy a Verizon phone because I don't like the locked down hardware, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't recommend it to someone else who doesn't care about that and just wants a solid device that works in a lot of places.
I use T-Mobile, because everything I do is on Google and I wanted to jump on the Android bandwagon, but that's something that works for me. It's all up to the individual. So please stop calling it a waste of a carrier just because T-Mobile doesn't work for you in your little pocket of the world.
Gotta agree with Wii60, everyone wants something different in their carrier. To me, cingular was a rubbish launch carrier for the iPhone, because I've had trouble with their customer support and signal before. But there are plenty of people who think it's just fine, and plenty more that would swear by it.
Well Wii60, I am pretty sure you have not touched a single PDA/Blackberry device on verizon lately. Also with the phones running BREW, I find it actually more helpful for customers who don't want to learn where every single function on the phone is located and with that layout you can find anything nice and fast. So....maybe those regular phones are a little "crippled"
While I completely agree that it's different per individual preference/location/etc. (for the most part) on which carrier works/is best, it's a total load of crap that they ALL price gouge and seem to keep their prices generally the same in regards to packages and what you get for your money. They all try to offer something a bit different, but it mostly amounts to the same.
The other real crime is to see carriers fight over exclusivity of certain phones, or to see certain phones go to one, maybe two carriers.
I could ramble for quite awhile about how disappointed I am with the iPhone now, or how AT&T is gouging me on data & text (though Verizon appears the pricing would be the exact same), or how I STILL don't have 3G in my area even though AT&T has said we'll have it by the end of the summer for the past 2 or 3 years - yet I still have to pay for 3G with my iPhone plan (no - I don't travel - my loss I spose). I feel like if the HTC Hero came to Sprint I would switch in a heartbeat, despite my being with AT&T for 6-7 years now (what has it really gotten me loyalty wise?). I'd pay an extra $10 or so but I'd have unlimited minutes in addition to what I currently have with AT&T. The HTC seems an awesome fit for what I want my phone to do, but according to the reviews I've seen they seem to have saddled it with inferior hardware to what the OS needs to run smoothly.
Such a shame so many phones have come so close to what I want - with one dealbreaker or two major flaws.
@m3nphis
Actually, the reason I say that is because the Blackberry Storm cut Wifi, a big killer there. Also, with reports of Verizon only releasing their own app store for all phone furthers my point. That sort of this is a deal breaker for me, but might not be for other people.
If it works for you, great, I'm happy for you, but it doesn't work for me.
I love T-Mobile because they're small enough to not bother offering any crappy services like video and music stores that nobody is going to use. They end up giving you more or less a straight factory install of the OS and it's usually software unlocked. Plus their prices are fair and their coverage is pretty great in my area.
@chefgon_ign
Not sure if this is just a US thing but T-Mobile in the UK always modify their WinMo ROMs. My MDA Compact V (Touch Diamond 2) was unrecognisable compare to the stock TD2.
Good job its a WinMo phone though as I put on a custom ROM as soon as....
I can't wait for this to hit Sprint. My contract with them is actually already expired but my SERO plan is so unbelievably f'ing sweet and the Touch series has so far all worked on SERO so I'm waiting for Sprint to drop the TP2.
Otherwise I might have to give up and buy an iPhone 3GS like everyone else since I qualify for an employee discount on AT&T that makes the plan a lot less craptastic than it normally is.
@poke
Yeah, it's a US thing. T-Mobile bought what used to be VoiceStream over here and pretty much left them to their own devices. The only branding T-Mobile does over here is usually just MyFaves app, UMA, a ringtone/wallpaper, and T-Mobile Web2Go or whatever it is now (basically a shortcut to their web portal).
Onelove will be happy
I am, but where is sprint's announcement? :P I am about to throw my slow ass mogul against the wall.
Off topic, but who is Paul Chapel?
Link please?
"No."
*rolls up newspaper*
"Bad."
*whacks Jason with rolled up newspaper*
Don't mention him, it will only draw him to this thread. I wouldn't be surprised if he does a Google search for his Engadget username so he can see if he's getting the attention that he craves.
jason = paul chapel (nice try)
Another horrible winmo device, just give it 5 months and check the customer ratings you can bet 3 out of 5 stars
I love my WinMo device.
Love my Touch Pro. Have had the G1 and played around with an iPhone plenty. None of them can compete with my Touch Pro running Windows 6.5. Can't wait to get my hands on the TP2.
you can't argue with that sexy keyboard though
Touch pro? I had a touch pro, worst phone I have ever owned. I even loaded a custom rom on it in hopes of being a better device and it just wasn't.
Although its a 'touch screen" have the items you can't touch, and require a stylus, the phone lagged no matter what rom you used, or tweaks. I was always accident calling people, or hitting the wrong things waiting for the lag. The phone was heavy, and hurt my hands to hold constantly while trying to type on the mini cramped keyboard. I had to turn the wifi up to max to get a signal from 5 ft away, when all other devices in my home work fine on my connection, even down the street!
Yes, almost every review of the Touch Pro 2 has totally trashed it... except for, like, EVERY review published to date.
How exactly does one "turn up the wifi to max" on a Windows Mobile device? Last time I checked it was either on or off.
@Matt -- Its part of the power settings, I think setting to performance mode makes a difference to the signal strength. This phone received a pretty positive review from a user on my site and I think I have only had to list 2 or 3 issues to its product listing.
If you're interested check my other posts or profile to get the link.
Digitally sick, more like digitally sick in the head.
You speak in vague terms, and seem totally clueless.
For what it's worth, I will skip over the Touch Pro 2 as my original Touch Pro 1 gets the job done and then some.
And yes, with a Custom Rom, preferrably TF3D2 + WM 6.5, and some tweaking, these things blow away all other devices on the market in terms of features, capabilities, and even style.
Ahh it shall be sweet getting one of these......................and waiting about a week and replacing the sure to be horrible T-Mobile ROM with a nice clean 6.5 one from XDA-Devs!
They've already ported TP2 roms to the TP, so it'll probably be out before the phone is, if it's not already.
Once again HTC are moving along at a snails pace. Why dont they make a truly memorable device for once. They have/had so much creativity when it came to designing the OS overlay with TouchFlo but their boring as bat shit devices are whats letting them down.
What on earth could you want? 3.5" screen, Tilting, 5 key row, spacey keyboard, noise-canceling speak-phone that takes up the back of the device... You want crystals encrusted? This is as good as WinMo gets.
Technology wise - this is as good as any phone gets right now.
^ HTC is actually way behind when it comes to hardware. They're using outdated processors, no 3.5mm jack in most of their current models, and their driver support is (from what I've read) near non-existent. The new Samsung WinMo phones have better internals, though the software isn't necessarily up to snuff. Hell, even the Samsung Jet, a non-smartphone, can play hi res divx/xvid files perfectly, while the TD2 and TP2 have issues. Even the HTC Hero has been blasted for it's slow interface (same cruddy processor).
YES!!!! THANK GOD IT'S HERE. im an andriod fanboy but i have to admit the tp2 is amazing and it's coming to tmobile. im seriously thinking about switching to this phone.
no 3.5 typical htc
Verizon's version of the TP2 will have a 3.5mm jack.
Yes, because it's a 3.6 WVGA
Sorry, just realized you meant the headphone plug.
They said the CDMA Touch Pro 2s will get it and most of their future devices. Guess we'll have to wait.
