Video: Creative Zii EGG 3D gaming demo

Now that the gang at Creative have 'fessed up to the Zii EGG first seen at the FCC earlier this month, we imagine we'll be encountering this bad boy quite often over the coming months. If you need your StemCell Computing fix right now, we have a video that showcases the newest developer platform running a racing game in all of its accelerometer-packing, 3D OpenGL ES-enhanced glory. Peep for yourself after the break.

Whoever coined the phrase "stemcell computing" should be handled a medal, and would also most likely get a slap in the face of angry mothers. ^_^
I thought Bush outlawed it?
I hope your trying to be sarcastic, even so that was a bad joke haha.
Bush outlawed the government financing (just the gov.) stemcell research using embryonic cells (the ones from foetuses), which I agreed with but I do hate bush, and aren't a republican, nor a christian, I'm just a normal atheist.
Oh and he did allow a limted number of embryonic cells to be used even.
Anyway obama already turned that around and removed that law.
Just for those not keeping up with political crap who are curious.
"and aren't a republican, nor a christian, I'm just a normal atheist. "
Lol.
thats awesome!!! ME want MORE!!
i think that's a chic playing or a metro-sexual who just got a manicure , look how pretty those thumbs are
tilt control sucks, doesnt matter if it's wiiremote or iphone/itouch, I want real buttons
i got an email saying you can get one of these for FREE! (assuming you buy the 399 SDK for it). It looks interesting.
big deal ??? engadget....come on....this video was on ziilabs yesterday itself .... i thought you guys saw it...lol http://www.zii.com/Developer/SDKVideo.aspx ...under 3D openGL ES ....
since this is android and open source, could any company make a standard style game controller that kind of snaps to the body of this thing?
you could have shoulder buttons and dual analog sticks etc....
As long as Creative puts code in the dalvik framework to allow for such things then yes. Of course, they might also be able to use that new NDK google put out... Haven't checked out its capabilities yet.
Probably, but it would be hard to do sense Android phones come in all form factors. I know the iPod/iPhone is getting the iControlPad, but it's a lot easier to do on that platform because they all have basically the same casing.
I would love to have that sound effect at the end of the video to use for an alert when I receive new text messages. Sounds awesome.
creative is going down.
This is pathetic , it is like some companies doesn't even bother to do something new.
WTF?
An Android based media player with a front facing speaker, microphone, camera on the front and back, with a multi-stream processor based core, SD expansion, all for 199 to start?
What in the hell is wrong with you? Sounds damn new to me.
i have seen these 2 years ago. Maybe now it has better cpu, better cam etc. But nothing new here really.
Btw , name zii is pathetic too. is it really that hard to find a name?
Which device did you see 2 years ago?
Link or it didnt happen.
@hari: You make other Indians look stupid. Now STFU and read into it, before you start calling it "FAIL" or some other shit ! It uses "StemCell Computing" Read into that, and also it has freaking HD cam in the back, AFAIK, even your Mom doesn't have one. So, the Zii > Your Mom !
All kidding aside, I seriously think you should log off the Internet and go watch some pathetic Hindi reality show ! How the fuck is a mobile device which is just a proof of concept have such an interesting Hardware spec sheet? It makes other Companies look like Money Launderers ! And if some one just ports over SenseUI other stuff, it'd be a killer device. And please stop comparing this to the iPhone.
Cause when the iPhone is impressive, this is the kind of stuff that is prone to blow your Mind ! Seriously dude, what're you even doing in a tech site?
@Ameen
Sorry but you are stupid. I am not indian , Hari comes from Hari Seldon . You should log off the internet ,and start reading some books. You got a lot to learn.
Zii (yes, name is pathetic ) , may have interesting hardware specs , but if you have been watching the tech scene for a sometime, you should have learnt that having great hw specs alone doesn't mean anything.
Just watch it for a year, and see how terrible it is going to fail.
This accelerometer gaming stuff seems like a complete gimic to me. I'd rather Creative concentrate on improving the PMP in other areas such as better codec support.
apple doesnt even make the ipod touch remember. if you read up on this the whole internals are different from an ipod touch, and wayy better. i hate when people try to say everybody is cloning apples stuff. this is not a clone it is better than the ipod touch so it is not a clone. it is better not just because it doesnt say apple on it but because it is more promising. add a removable battery and lower the price and it would be the perfect pmp.
Except it's not a PMP... In fact, the Media features have not even been really shown yet. If anything, this is a MID/Keyboardless netbook.
That game would in fact propably make me seasick having to tilt the screen like that, but ok it's jut a demo.
cool. I will be getting one. but it will not be replacing anything I currently own, I see a little potential in android. the specs are pretty cool. it's a computer for gods sake!,
It's just to show the capabilities, I doubt it was a completely coded game. As for the clone remarks, clones are copies, and this is obviously better. It's not meant as a gaming platform solely, it's something else to do when you're waiting on the train. It's not going to bring us the next half-life or bio-shock, but waste time. I'll take anything with a touch screen and user expandable memory any day over inflated prices with no expansion.
I could really use this
We all love tech ... Apple people are sycophantic about apple ... Everyone else is antiphantic (dont' think that is a word but you get it) ... You have to ask yourself why ... I think it is because it is overwhelming ... Apple makes it simple for people who want it simple ... Not so much the other guys ... If you're wired for apple, you're wired for apple ... If not, not ... Don't get all uppity about it ... Just get on with it ... Buy the gadgets of beauty that most appeal to you ... Who cares what anyone else thinks?
Nice. I want one.
Sorry - I have to comment - Cant sit here and let this slip by...
Seriously - 'Zii' ?? Could they actually have made a product with a more obviously 'Wii'-like name?
And as for the styling - its as if the design department had a meeting with the Creative execs who came into the boardroom placing an iPod in the middle of the coffee table and said:
'We want you to come up with something like this....'
*Execs leave the room..*
Creative team look blankly at each other for a second then one of them says:
'Should we just make it...this?'
**Everyone nods and grumbles enthusiastically in agreement. **
Creative just got creative!!!! and some!!!
I don't know what to love the most about this platform.
It could be the brilliant idea of developing a whole hardware solution that could be sold to third parties so that they can use their own resources to create whatever service or gadget they want with it, leveraging creative (in serious financial problems) from investing on what they have failed: sell their their products as a service.
May be the extraordinarely spected hardware they have packaged on this device with stagering 8 Gflops of processing power (the iPhone 3GS has 6.42 Mflops as stated here: http://blackpixel.com/blog/244/early-iphone-3g-s-opengl-test-results/ that's around 1300 times less), GPS, BT, WiFi, X-Fi and much more.
The fact that Creative want it to be fully open, customizable, standarized and cheap, able to run from scratch two full flaged OS's, many codecs, etc...
Or just that it's something new, a new idea old, something Apple and Microsoft are scared of. Creative has been creative, clever and ambitious. They are delivering a platform so on top of the rest, having most of what the rest lacks (or just don't want you to have have yet ala iPodTouch 2G BT as a reference).
If they achive to put this into market, is the PMP of my dreams
*cough*iphonecopy*cough*
PLEASE STOP WORD-FIGHTING PEOPLE
is this definitely just a pmp or is there a chance someone could stick 3G on this?
I was waiting for a verizon palm pre but if this does turn into a phone (GSM or CDMA)
it would sort of kick ass in the hardware department
Sure, I'm an Apple fan, I'm not apologising for this. But seriously is this the best that Creative can come up with?
Back in my PC building days Creative really kicked out some excellent products, from sound, graphics to speakers and portable devices. I think the issue Creative have had is relevancy, it's not the ipod thats killed Creative it's all those integrated audio controllers (Realtek) sitting on every motherboard out there. The problem is when you get something for free elsewhere it's damn near impossible for someone else to keep charging for it no matter how good/better your product is.
It's pretty clear Creative have used the ipod touch as a basis for this design, if you're not in agreement then your snorting darjeeling. (Brit alternative to koolaid). The fact it features some additional features does not make this a standout product, and here is the issue. If say 5 big manufacturers pick this up, how do these differentiate their offerings from each other??? If say one modified the system why would someone develop for it specifically, as i'd imagine the market share to be very small??? And lets not remember every day that passes from this announcement to actual release, the likes of Apple are selling actual units.
Yes it's got Google Android but seriously is this the best that Creative can offer??? If the chip is that good they should have approached manufacturers to take that instead not some reference media player built around it. I'd signed up for the Zii emails last year and have been seriously disappointed. I just simply don't think it will be enough to save Creative which would be a shame.
Apple iphones/touches aren't made by apple they are made by foxconn with samsung inards. Apple is nothing more than a Dell who'll slap their logo on something they get some outside designer to design. And their operation system is just linux code, they couldn't even come up with that how pathetic.
So enjoy their overpriced outsourced products.
If this Zii came in a 4x6 or 5x7 form factor I wouldn't even bother dumping my pod touch on somebody, as I wouldn't want to straddle them with a inferior product.
I'm sorry but your wrong on a number of accounts and before you go shouting off in public I'd suggest you get your facts right.
No company producing consumer electronics bar say Samsung do it in house. Creative will not be manufacturing these themselves and will most likely be built by Quanta or Foxconn as well. You obviously have no idea about product design and manufacturing processes.
The operation system to quote you is not based on Linux, but has UNix at it's core. If there is one thing you'll be dumping or straddling it's your mamma!
Get your facts right next time, techtard!
Don't be silly. Not only does Apple design every device that they ship they also work very closely with the manufacturers to design suitable manufacturing processes, which is one reason why the manufacturers like working with Apple. Further, Apple makes the software that runs on the hardware and, as anyone with an understanding of technology will tell you, software is what is important.
If you'd care to explain how Mach and FreeBSD turned into Linux then I'd love to hear it...
Wow. Just as I thought that the Zii wouldn't be a gimmick, and wouldn't copy ideas and instead make something cool and awesome with such hardware specs.
Seriously. An accelerometer, I think I saw one of those before. Oh wait. I did, on an iPod Touch.
Why don't they try to release something new to the market? Something which kicks the shit out of Apple and makes Apple 'innovate'?
Show this to average Joe along with an iPod Touch, and I'm sure average Joe would go with an iPod. Why? Because it's iPod, and has basically the same features. He probably won't care what's on the inside. Nor does he care about 'Android'. If Creative sell, excellent.
Apple gets more competition and will force them to work. But at this moment in time, I don't see that happening, sadly. iPod is now going in to the 3rd generation, and still competitors couldn't formulate something to counter Apple. We'll have to wait and see for the Zune, maybe we'll get an accelerometer AND an OLED screen. IDK at this point.
The Zii is a gimminck to the iPhone just as much as the iPhone is to every other portable media player prior to it. If you want to have a buttonless device, going accelerometer is the only way to go if you want to track movement of the device or the user. Accelerometers has been used for decades, just recently added to PMP devices alike. So, why do you say it is copying Apple's ideas???..., those are not apples ideas what so ever. As far as touchscreen devices go, there is not much you can do to the layout to make it different from the rest, you will see the same layout over and over as it is with portable computers, desktop computers, television, etc..., etc..., The true value of this device is it open nature and the fact that Creative can sell it to companies so that they can build their own solutions and services upon a standardized and very powerful piece of hardware ( they are even complying with the mini USB) . It may look the same from outside but it's totally different from the inside, do a little research http://www.zii.com/Developer/SDKProducts.aspx and help yourself.
I hate people complaining about lack of innovation when they see an OLED screen as a relevant spec.
Looks like Extreme-G .. I loved that game!
@Ameen

Mmmm... It's been a long time since I've seen anything genuinely interesting come out of Creative. I have no plans on buying it but I'm interested to see what happens with it just the same.
