DSi v1.4 firmware happening now in Japan, bringing Facebook connectivity along for the ride

Back at E3 2009 it was announced that Nintendo would roll out the capability to upload photo to Facebook from the DSi. Well, we're hearing from Engadget Japanese that that firmware updating is now occurring. It's a pretty minor update which includes the aforementioned ability to upload photos to Facebook, and brings a faster "image display speed" in the DSi's camera. We're sure there's some behind the scenes tweaking going on too, right? No word on when this update will hit elsewhere, but we'll keep our eyes on our DSi until it happens. You know, for work. This update also stops any currently released flashcard from booting.

I've actually read elsewhere that this update also includes anti piracy measures to disable the use of flashcards:

The next gen DS needs to make the two screens flush with each other, it needs a capacitive touch screen, 16gb built in memory + SD card memory, and a graphics power jump. Of course Nintendo pretty much owns this market so they probably won't do any of it. D:

So I guess the "gaming only" consoles and handhelds are a thing of the past now?

Don't get me wrong I'm all for connectivity but nearly every single thing being made now has to have features that aren't what the product is made for. From refrigerators having televisions built in, to lamps having ipod docks, to phones having everything from camera's to flashlight apps, blu-ray players that have pandora music support, xbox 360 that has twitter, etc... It's like they are just throwing in more and more features that a fraction of the people will ever use but advertise that it HAS the ability to do these things.

The one thing I find the funniest is that these days, people buy cellphones for everything except the one thing it was designed for, "talking to people" etc...Nearly every review nowadays is about having this certain OS support, GPS, WiFi for internet browsing, Music capabilities, camera for pictures, but hardly anything for calling or call quality.

I guess people want everything to have EVERYTHING...

Any thoughts?

In all seriousness, the convenience of everything have everything is reducing redundancy in life (not in the market per se).

Having a mobile phone capable of many computing tasks saves us from having to stop what we're doing, sit in front of a computer (for example) and complete any given task.

I love the innovation, and hope things get even more streamlined/converged.

it's interesting that they'd release a facebook option in Japan, seeing as american social networking websites have an ifinitessimally small userbase in Asia, especially Japan compared to something like Mixi, or even friendster o__o

I guess they wanted to make the firmware code as universally compatible as possible, as it's pretty much the same everywhere (but America).

And facebook does come in Japanese, so it's not like they are complete strangers to it.

Just because Facebook comes in Japanese doesn't mean anyone uses it in Japanese.

I guarantee Mixi has at least 80% market share in Japan.

In fact, I've heard of Japanese Exchange Students asking Japanese friends to friend them on Facebook. Apparently, none of them knew what Facebook was.

Facebook!? For Japan!?!? Mmm... Strange choice, considering nobody cares about it there (and conversely everybody has a mixi.jp account (of course Facebook has a decent API for foreign agents to peek into it, while Mixi does not, but still).

Oh man look at the facebook aplication... come on who would want to use it for more than 10 minutes?
I think the DS and the PSP should not get this kind of firmware integration with any type of stupid social networking!!!

Seriously keep focusion on games, otherwhise you will lose market for $ELLPHONES that can play games!

the DS games totally sucks and now they are trying to block flashcards because of a sudden drop in sells haha It's time to make something new BIG N
