Acer's Aspire Predator gaming rig gets even faster, stays just as orange
Just a few weeks too late for a Transformers 2 tie-in, Acer has announced a new revision of its Aspire G desktop, a.k.a. Predator. It shares the same case with the earlier edition that hit the US of A late last year, but naturally has some better specs this time 'round. The CPU is now one of Intel's new Core i7 950's running at 3.06GHz, up to 12GB of DDR3 RAM is on offer, while more permanent storage is offered by a 1TB HDD and a Blu-ray reader. A pair of NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 graphics cards keep the pixels flowing over four DVI-D ports, and dual Gigabit Ethernet is on offer for those about to rock shotgun network connections. All that clad in a brilliant orange case that looks like it rolled off the Lamborghini production line, though at ¥259,800 ($2,700ish) it's a lot cheaper than the Murciélago LP 670-4 Superveloce you've been drooling over. No word on American availability, but since the last one took about four months to make it this way perhaps we'll see this one by year's end.

saw this in J+R and it looks like a transformer
wow, i came here to type the same thing. (get out of my head man!)
I love J&R! I always make sure to check out their laptops/computers whenever I'm there to use their bathroom. LOL
for rich 12 year olds o.o.
And their brainless parents, apparently. GTX250x2 = phail. GTX 275, GTX 285, GTX 295 (for the hardcore SLI lovers) = win.
GTX 250 = 9800 something, a pair will lose to a single GTX 285.
Not that they care...
Also, CPU isn't the best choice either. In one word: lame.
But at least it looks good.
Sour grapes, much?
Sorry, the new hotness is the Ferrari 458 Italia. I just ordered mine. :)
It has a nice case but the Orange is just wagh
The 12 GB DDR3 look good
the Graphic card is crap and the processor could be better for that price.
The rest is fine to be honest
at least it's not crappy ati card
no really.. I think the design is teen targeted :p.
Crappy? ATi cards fucking rule.
Crappy? ATi 4890 is the strongest card on the market right now.
makes alienware look tasteful
IMHO it's a amazingly cool piece of gear and I would love to get one.Roughly $3300 when converted to Aust it seems worth it kinda, I mean Excellent case, Amazing spec sheet and just I personally think alittle bragging rights helps to sell it.
Shoddy case - the cover you have to flip up manually - not even really on soft-lift gas struts. Its all show and not much quality TBH. Its exactly like a Transformer in that you have to do everything manually and its actually nowhere near as good as it looks in the pictures.
hmm, it seems to be missing something if it's faster.... something about a white line or stripe perhaps ?
and spoilers
it also needs some enormus muffler and a fake hood scoop. oh yea and some TURBO stickers ( they really do work LOL)
Go Go, Gatineau.
Don't forget NOS. Remember, it doesn't matter whether you win by an inch, or a mile. Winning's WINNING.
All it needs is a big old "R" badge. OK, and a grapefruit-shooter muffler that goes "zing zing zing."
Nice specs and honestly not a bad price considering it would last many years (if you were to use it as an everyday machine).
But seriously whats up with incredibly poor looking case. Its just the same rectangular box with a shoddy looking shell around it. You can see the beige box poking through up the top so if your going for the wow factor with the case at least finish the job...
I sure as hell know Lamborghini wouldn't be using shoddy looking black plastics that feature oh so prominently on this machine.
"Nice specs and honestly not a bad price considering it would last many years (if you were to use it as an everyday machine)."
That's a rather silly thing to say, don't you think? There's a reason this is called a 'gaming rig'; it's because it contains things one needs for gaming.
For every day usage, the only part of the specs that is worth something is the hard drive and possibly the Blu-Ray player. Otherwise, one could get a much cheaper PC that will offer the same experience. After all, I'm pretty sure opening Firefox/Internet Explorer doesn't require 12GB DDR3 RAM and a Core i7 950 at 3.06Ghz.
Then again, I'm not aware of any games that can make much use of those two either.
GTS 250s? Weak. Very weak. Should have been at least 260s or 4870s.
Those graphics cards suck. Tri Sli or just Sli 285s and a Evga Classified
Didn't the first edition of this PC have a bunch of overheating issues?
Yeah, the PSU was shooting fire or something.
The older Predator models have been recalled twice now due to case design. I seriously hope Acer has those problems fixed by now.
Spec sheet looked great until I read it has 2 250's. All these super high end specs, and then a couple lame gpu's, how could they not at least go with 260's?
The case looks ok, but I bet its built with the cheapest plastic, much like Alienware desktops.
Agreed x2
Twin 250s ain't too shabby, but at that price point that just won't do. I actually like the case design, but it's a bit outrageous for my taste. I'd love to replace the "G" emblem with an Autobot one haha.
I'd rather have one 275 or better than two 250s
I prefer not to have a pc case that is potentially more complicated to deal with than the codes i'm compiling
Looks like it has USB 3.0
Look at this pic http://i31.tinypic.com/2nr1wxz.jpg
This is one of those occasions when manufacturers should pay attention to the Harry Potter books (go with me on this one). Despite the fact that the books are pretty much appreciated by all ages it seems that some people were put off by the original cover artwork that made the book look like a children's book, or because they did not want to be seen reading something that looked like a children's book. Given this they produce 2 versions of each title, one with the normal cover and another with a more "adult-friendly" cover. Here I tend to think that Acer would do well to produce a version of this computer with a case that is more stylish or, frankly, boring. Personally speaking I would not buy this computer simply because of the look of the case - it hurts my eyes. It's just too "over the top" and I'm sure I am not going to be the only person who feels like this.
I'm at the stage in life where I am no longer interested in having a PC that has flashing lights/neon, or looks like a Transformer, or looks like an alien's head. It probably doesn't help that I didn't like the Transformer movies and think Michael Bay should be hunted down and beaten to death with the corpse of Shitty LeBeef for crimes against cinema.
IBM makes plenty of computers for you, Pops. :)
Take a Corvette. You could put the engine, drive-train, suspension, and interior from it, into a Toyota Camry body. It just wouldn't be as fun.
And that's just the point, isn't it? Acer is effectively throwing money away by producing a case that is, judging by the comments on this article, so divisive. It's no problem for me to take my money elsewhere and, as I noted in the original comment, there are other companies that produce gaming PCs that don't look ridiculous.
The car analogy, however, is very poor. Besides the fact that Corvettes are rubbish, the point is that you can have both power and style. Take, for example, something like a BMW M5. There you have an almost perfect driving machine yet it doesn't looks like some sort of reject from The Fast & The Furious. Mind you, I still lust after a TVR Tuscan so there is no accounting for taste...
Also, you could NOT fit the engine, drive-train, suspension, or interior of a Corvette into/onto a Toyota Camry body. But if you could, it would be WAY fun.
lolz you guys... lolz.
are there people that would honestly want that to sit in their room?
I'll stick with the my HAF932 or the CM690 my 2nd PC is in.
GTS250 SLI, hurr hurr
Great for teens with money. Other than that, it's quite a tasteless addition to any collection.

Clunkified. I bet this thing weighs 10 pounds extra for the equivalent of a huge spoiler on the back of a Honda Civic.
My $1000 PC has better components.
I love how there is post after post on how the specs suck. Folks, after all these years on the internet haven't you learned that the specs will always suck on every computer that is announced? There is always something better if you have a bottomless wallet and can get the newest part announced into each computer you make.
