iPhone OS 3.0.1 update released, fixes SMS vulnerability (updated with statement from Apple)
Looks like Apple pulled the trigger on patching that nasty iPhone SMS vulnerability a little earlier than we expected -- the iPhone OS 3.0.1 update just hit iTunes. It's not some lightweight, either: you're looking at 280MB of love here, so get downloading, friends.
Update: Here's what Apple rep Tom Neumayr had to say about this little episode.

Well... what do you know about that?We appreciate the information provided to us about SMS vulnerabilities which affect several mobile phone platforms. This morning, less than 24 hours after a demonstration of this exploit, we've issued a free software update that eliminates the vulnerability from the iPhone. Contrary to what's been reported, no one has been able to take control of the iPhone to gain access to personal information using this exploit.

My unhacked iphone is acting up after the 3.01 update...all the downloaded applications don't run...
This is fixable, and was a bug before 3.0.1 (that I've personally experienced).
Usually the last app you downloaded triggered this situation. Delete and reinstall this app and you should be good to go.
I've also heard of people fixing this problem by simply downloading a new app (any app, go for something random and free).
Good luck
I am just glad it seems to have fixed my broken icons.
Started installing this update then got an error message. Now my computer says it can't recognize the iPhone as USB device. I'm re-downloading the update on my second computer in the hopes that I can at least get my phone working again. Right now all it shows is the connect to iTunes logo.
Stats:
8gig iPhone 3G running 3.0.0
Windows XP SP2
iTunes 8.2.1.6
After Restoring on a second computer and switching USB ports many times on the first computer I got my recent backup to take, but many of my apps are still missing. Totally frustrating since I was only trying to install a security update.
Just found out At&t tv won't work on Iphone! Getting ready to Jailbreak!
Yes, now you could JailBreak & Unlock.
My own tools available at http://UnlockAlliPhone.com to unlock. Its a simple one click windows software that unlocks your iPhone 3G/3GS.
Did this update brick anyone elses 3gs?? I ended up having to downgrade my newy (just took it out of the box new) back down to 3.0 as the 3.0.1 update just put the phone into recovery mode.
Thanks slot man, however for some reason I tryed it one more time and now it worked. Don't know why because I tryed on a few different computers before but all of a sudden it just worked.
hey kman it bricked my 3gs, where did you get software version 3.0?
Hey Dustinsipes

http://rumahabi.com/downgrade-iphone-3gs-3-1-to-3-0-os-firmware.html

Hope this works for you.. I don't understand why my 3.0.0 can't upgrade might speak to a person at Mapple..

kman
It seems to have fixed the issue that cause apps to show the wrong icon... btw.
I not so sure that they got it right. My iPhone has been "Verifying updated iPhone software..." for over 6 hours with no end in sight.
What? 280 MB for an sms update? ;-)
If you people have such a problem with the way apple runs things, then why dont you go get your degree in software engineering and all that good stuff, get a job with apple, and fix it. otherwise, stop complaining, at least they fixed the problem fairly quickly. Maybe apple cant figure out how to do patches, but at least they figured out how to make a stable operating system.
My 3GS is a brick now after trying to update - got stuck for ever on "Verifying iphone software", restarted my computer and tried to restore, same thing again. Called Apple customer service, deleted the 297 MB file and downloaded it again, and same problem again. Tried it on a different computer, and still no end in sight.
I think I am a PC..
