Nikon Coolpix S640, S570, S70 leak out, leave little to the imagination
Nikon's Coolpix S1000pj project-o-camera may be the big rumor du jour, but the company's also got plenty of other cameras slipping through the cracks these days, like this trio of new compact shooters. Leading off the lot is the 12.2-megapixel Coolpix S640 (pictured above), which is said to pack a 5x, 28mm equivalent wide-angle lens, a 2.7-inch display, an "ultra-fast autofocus system," a start-up time of just 0.7 seconds, built-in quick retouch features, and your choice of three different colors for $499. Joining it are the 12-megapixel Coolpix S570, which replaces the 10-megepixel S560 and will set you back $349, and the all new 12.1-megapixel Coolpix S70 (check it out after the break), which runs a hefty $599 and includes 3.5-inch OLED touchscreen, a 5x optical zoom, sensitivity setting up to ISO 6400, and your choice of red, black, or champagne colors. No word on a release date for any of them just yet, but it sure seems like they're about to burst out of the gate.

But can I edit pictures and auto focus like on my iPhone 3Gs?
otherwise forget it.
got flash?
got flash?
Hahaha +1 if you meant that ambiguously, although Adobe Flash is unrelated. ;)
got resolution? how about any of the other features? besides, from what I understand your phone (which costs literally thousands of dollars to use) only has a 3 megapixel camera, which makes it kind of like what the following have but without much of a lens: http://www.photographyreview.com/cat/cameras/digital-cameras/3-megapixel/PLS_3098crx.aspx
Auto-focus? I think it would be quite difficult to find a P&S that doesn't have an auto-focus feature.
Might want to point out those prices are in Australian dollars.
I dig the style of that S70...it's cool in a retro way
No recession antidote today? C'mon, Engadget! I'm being recessed!
n.
Maybe they've felt that they reached the pinnacle after giving away an iphone and everything else will only disappoint.
An OLED screen in a point and shoot camera seems like a waste.
They probably are going with OLED because is makes for longer battery life. The backlit LCD on most cameras is one of the biggest contributors to battery drain.
I find it funny everytime a tiny compact digicam manufacture advertise ISO 6400. LOL. Most compact digicams don't even have usable pictures with anything higher than ISO400, let alone 6400.
Why is it manufactures are still stuck with the cramping-more -MP, despite the obvious backlash against them that's been happening for quite some time?
Because there are still uninformed idiots out there that buys camera based on Megapixels alone.
I looked for a new digicam last week and ended up getting a Fuji f40fd refurb from Newegg. It sports a 1/1.6" CCD and it's "only" 8.3MP. Not bad for $75 I'd say, in fact it's probably better than the vast majority of newer point-and-shoots.
Why won't a manufacturer release a 6mp camera with noise free iso 6400 so that people could take quality indoor shots sans flash and still be high enough res for a decent 10x8 print or onscreen viewing?
I'll answer that myself. Your average dufus is megapixel obsessed. The world is wrong.
in us dollars it is $240 its a really nice camera.
