Clearwire lighting up ten more markets with WiMAX on September 1st
Not like we didn't have reason to believe that the ten markets mentioned in Clearwire's latest press release weren't getting a taste of that sweet, succulent 4G action in the near term, but it's sure good to see the official word passed down. On September 1st (as in, less than a month), the cool kids in Boise, Idaho, Bellingham, Washington and eight Texas markets (Abilene, Amarillo, Corpus Christi, Killeen / Temple, Lubbock, Midland/Odessa, Waco and Wichita Falls) will be able to laugh heartily at friends in other locales as they struggle to upload their latest YouTube clip over 3G. Each market should expect their own retail store opening as well as all sorts of other launch day shenanigans, some of which involve "promotional offers" that'll undoubtedly be too good to pass up.

I just tested out their coverage map in Boise, and it appears to already be availible in some parts (including mine).
Meanwhile, it isn't available in other parts.
Although it is on Clear.com, Clearwire's WiMAX subsidary.
No WiMax in LA or SF? Fail.
Why is it still listed as: "Boise, IA"?
IA = Iowa
Boise is in Idaho.
Idaho = ID.
because, dammit, we're american's! so geography isn't our strong suit.
Because there is actually a Boise in Iowa. Just google it...
And here I was getting excited it was coming to Iowa. Then the sky fell when I realized it didn't make sense.
I personally believe that US Americans are unable to do so because uh, some people out there in our nation don’t have maps and uh, I believe that our education, like such as in South Africa and the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, our education over here in the US should help the US, or, or should help South Africa, and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future for our children.
Question: Does Sprint even have any phones available that can use 4g? I know they'll sell usb dongles and such for laptops, but what about phones?
I've seen different comments about whether or not the Pre is. Some people have said Sprint customer service told them it's not. I've seen Palm tech support on forums say it is. Guess I'll just have to try it out in SA come 4th qtr. :D
Anyone in already launched cities with a Pre to test it?
No Sprint phones with WiMax. I live in Baltimore and have a Pre - it uses EVDO. The U300 modem for laptops is great though: uses 4G Wimax in areas where it's available and 3G EVDO where Wimax isn't yet available.
dangit someone beat me to the IA goof-up.
Being a U of I grad (no, not Illinois) I had to represent.
I'm reminded of the University of Iowa T-Shirts
University of Iowa
Idaho City, Ohio
Yea, I commented on the Iowa/Idaho thing when the press leak was posted. As an Iowan, I feel a little hurt...sad face =-(
My new modem arrived yesterday. Up and running Clear WiMAX here in Amarillo, TX. W00T.
I live in Amarillo. We got WiMax this weekend. It is awsome.
Salem, North Carolina has a population of around 2,200.

Winston-Salem, the fourth-largest city in the state (Behind Charlotte, Raleigh and Greensboro) has a population of around 225,000
Clear launched in the Texas markets on August 1. I suspect the September 1 date may be Sprint's launch date.
This is an interesting though poorly written chart. West Texas is right in the middle of Dallas. Salem should probably say Winston-Salem, and it it is HIGHLY unlikely that they mean Boise Iowa. I suppose I'll believe it when I see it, but right now, it kinda makes me wonder what they were thinking.
I'm pretty sure that is West, Texas in the middle of DFW. This is probably the first time Wichita Falls has gotten any advanced technology before DFW.
Seriously, no California markets are on the list at all? Or NY? And NC has 3?!?!? And TX has 4? What the hell?
I don't use Sprint, but the market choices flabbergast me.
Perhaps they are targeting markets where they have low marketshare to try and win over new customers, or markets where they have a high market share to keep current customers happy. Also, there could be infrastructure or licensing problems keeping them away from some markets.
that was supposed to be a reply to Ryan above me...
Boston, NY and others are slated for 2010.
Wonder if the Tyler, TX market will get this anytime soon? Would love to switch from 3G to this, unless someone can offer me LTE first.
No Los Angeles, San Francisco, or New York City?
Seriously, where's the love for the city of angels? Are we too densely populated to matter?
Suhweet. I can't wait to try it out when my cousin gets it. The ClearWire service they already have here in Abilene, is pretty dang good.
I may be forced to buy the motorola pc card for service around town when it gets here in Sept, if it does. Though I could just drop by any starbucks or mcdonalds for free wifi with my at&t plan...hmmm, choices, choices...
To answer the question in the actual press release: Nothing.
The WiMax service is pretty good in Atlanta,GA- but now I am getting 'acceptable usage' emails and phone calls from Clear (I am heavy Internet user).
I guess their 'unlimited' plan is not so unlimited...
