Latest Dell tablet / MID rumor: Intel-based, free-on-contract

Last we heard, Dell was secretly at work on a handheld / MID that would challenge the likes of the iPod touch, but it turns out it may also have its eye on the Kindle and the still emerging e-reader market, or the two may be one in the same -- or neither, but bear with us for a minute. According to Wired's Gadget Lab, Dell is looking to shake things up in a fairly big way by offering a touchscreen tablet of unspecified size for free to folks willing to enter into a contract and sign up for "one or more digital media subscriptions." Details are otherwise a bit light, as you might expect, but Dell is rumored to be collaborating with Intel on the device, and the pair are supposedly looking to launch it in "about six months."

Hummmm, DELL should get into the cellphone market with either WM or Android powered phone
What's up with that mushroom-looking alien on the screen?
Johnny come lately? :) Another version of Dell DJ? :)
Nothing can be as bad as the Dell DJ!
(Yes I owned one, it was a horrible experience)
Dell`s answer to the forthcoming Apple netbook/tablet device. Media subscription would compete against the iTablet`s iTunes cocktail thing.
I hate monthly fees & contracts. But they figure people are using their computers for over 5 years now, and they aren't making any money off those people.
The reason is no innovative product from PC manufactures the last 5 years. People can run XP machine just fine. Vista or Vista Pro aka Win 7 isn't the reason for people to buy a new computer. Not in this economy! Everyone is waiting for what iCompany will bring next and the PC copy machines begin!
Yes we know, Apple invented everything good.
-they invented the mp3 player
-they invented the touchscreen phone
-they invented the window based GUI
-they invented the chiklet style KB
You'd think the devotees of such an innovative company would be able to come up with some new material.
You're clearly an idiot! Innovation doesn't necessary mean you have to invent completely new. Sure, touch interface has
been around for decades. But most touch interface you see on cell phone prior to iPhone is no different from ATM machine.
The multi touch interface that tightly integrates with software app is called innovative concept. It is all about USER EXPERIENCE. A better analogy will be a truck and a luxury car. Both will take you from point A to point B but a luxury car will be more pleasant to ride. Idiot like you don't get it!
One day, Apple will have a serious competitor that will give them a real run for their money and beat them, hard, at their own game. ..Roll a 12-facet die for the number of decades until then.
Jon, you forgot the Tablet PC. Apple invented that too.
-Apple didn't invented the mp3 player
-Apple didn't invented the touchscreen phone
-Apple didn't invented the window based GUI
-Apple didn't invented the chiklet style KB
They just copied it with a good design and made a buck of it.
P.
They should think about working with Creative's Zii platform and finally turn the Egg into a cheap Android smartphone.
Maybe a tablet, maybe an E-reader.
How about this, they make OLED screens that are nearly transparent when powered down.
Could we slap one of those in front of a high contrast e-ink screen and get the best of both worlds?
If they made a tablet, they should definitely use Windows 7 and it's multi-touch support. I tried out one of Dell's latest all-in-one desktops at a store, and it was pretty fun using multi-touch on this musical insturment application Dell had on it. They should really shape Windows 7 into a nice multi-touch tablet.
Is it just me or does that look an awful lot like the Palm Pre?
so is it actually the Dell Pre?
it's a Dell Dr Dre
Lmao, I lol'd so hard, in public.
Is it just me, or does nobody actually care for this?
I don't CARE, but I'm curious. The Dell Axim was a WinMo PDA ahead of it's time under the hood.
That looks actually worse than the Pre! But it's not a surprise because it's a Dell.
As usual, I'll believe it exists once it has been officially announced and not until. Not all prototypes make it into production so "spy shots" are a curiosity at best.
